Wizkids Frameworks Dungeons and Dragons Review Orcs and Kobolds

  • Dungeons and Dragons is finally getting hard plastic minis on sprues, but the prices are meme-worthy. Fifty dollars for seven kobolds, and the same price for orcs. I'm not sure how many people are actually going to buy these miniatures at those prices... so we might as well give them a try! Let's assemble, paint, and review the kobold kit and the orc kit. I have a feeling that these polystyrene models are going to go down in D&D history... they might be infamous! It's good that these models exist, but minis from other tabletop RPGs and wargames might be a better option...

I manage a FLGS in Southern Ontario, with the launch of this line we ordered 2 of every pack and dedicated a whole spec to them on the wall. Since then we have reordered almost all of the player characters, some (mostly the Elf Ranger) we have reordered multiple times.

    • @captainparty
      @captainparty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sprue layout isn’t as simple as just laying out more models where there is room, you have to account for the physics of molten plastic at high pressure. That’s why GW, which has spent a lot of money on developing the tech and specialisation to make great plastic kits, can pack more into their sprues than most other companies. It’s an expensive process that took them years to perfect, so we are seeing a company that hasn’t learned how to best take advantage of the medium.

    Great video Brent!!!! I think your analysis of the prices here is a good one, however I don't think the large price will matter to most hardcore D&D players who will be buying these, a lot of whom aren't aware of things like Games Workshop, 3D printing, or any other alternatives aside from Nolzur's and maybe Reaper.
    The players will buy the player character models which are priced really well, and the DMs will probably not care that the monsters are overpriced, because they will just have to buy each set ONCE in their life (if they dont already have a set of orcs and kobolds that they like). There is also something to be said for high quality, OFFICIAL D&D miniatures, based on art from the monster manual, which is something that hasn't existed since 2001's chainmail line, I think certain lifestyle DMs will buy the whole set for this reason (I would have at the peak of my D&D playing)

      I don't disagree that some small amount of people who would really like these exist. But how many of them will be willing to pay luxury prices for less than luxury quality minis?
      I guess the question is, is this line supposed to be mainstream or an extremely low volume prestige offering? Because the internet exists, and it would only take 30 seconds to find any of these other kits if you care about value for money at all. So I don't know how many people will be aware of these, but incapable of finding more reasonably priced options. Which leaves the only reason to buy these being if overpaying is the point. Like Brent said, being "one of the few on Earth" to have these.

    Thanks for this video! Wizkids has definitely been increasing their prices tremendously on all fronts. They released a colossal, prepainted White Dragon a year ago for $100(where they also tried to not paint it, which we've also seen a lot of other examples of, but that's a different story), and now they're releasing an equally large Red Dragon for $400. Their newest set of prepainted minis in blind boosters are fewer than before at a higher price. And remember, when they first took over from the old DDM line, they halved the amount of minis in a booster, from 8 in the old line, to 4 in Wizkids "Icons of the Realms" line.)
    When I first got the news of the Frameworks series, I was happy, because from a logical point of view that ought to have meant more official minis at a lower price than Nolzur(which are preassembled and preprimed), and at the same time probably the highest quality sculpts Wizkids would make. I was looking at competitors, thinking it surely wouldn't *exceed* GW's similar products. How wrong i was.
    At least it seems I was right about the quality. But what good is that when it's not going to sell? I'd love that set of kobolds, but I'm not spending $50 on 7 tiny minis like that.
    I'm pretty much done with Wizkids at this point. At the very least, I'll only be buying second hand or at clearance sales.

    This seems like there probably was poor communication in terms of sprue layout, liken they'd already committed to having 5 separate sprues with 1 kobold per sprue when they could have easily fit 2 per sprue and given consumers a much better deal. The machining costs are a huge part of plastic production, so the more unique sprues the more expensive the kit. With 2 per sprue and 2 sets of each, you suddenly have a box of 8 at less than half the machining costs...

    As a forever DM, I'm probably the target market for these minis. Usually I just need a couple models for whatever encounter I'm putting together and if they look vaguely like what they're supposed to be, that's great! After the encounter, the minis go into a box and I might never use them again. This is where my 3d printer comes in handy. I can find one model I like and print 10 of them or whatever for almost nothing. The models don't look nearly as nice, but I don't feel bad about dumping them in a box with a bunch of other minis that have served their purpose.

    It’s a shame that these are as overpriced as they are because they do look great.
    I still am not sure these would be for me even if they were priced more reasonably, though. I’m not a huge fan of having to waste bits/options because I can only build one figure. If sets like this came with a number of bodies equal to the bits then I would have no issue, but they don’t. Probably number two reason I’ve never gotten into warhammer and stuff like that…number one being the prices, of course.
    For these sets, specifically, there are just far too many good, hassle free, much more reasonably priced options for me to ever destabilize my budget for them. I mean, what were they thinking? I can buy some of those cheaper options from WizKids themselves…I don’t think these are going to sell well for them, and I hope they find a way to price more reasonably and not just axe the line. If they do the latter, it would be quite a shame for the folks who *are* interested in these highly customizable figures.
