    You can shoot projectile spells out of the air with marksman weapons too which is cool.

      This actually kind of sucks though, because the "rhythm" of pulling back your bow and loosing an arrow usually coincides with the enemy's readying and using a spell, which means all (or most) of your arrows end up hitting their "spell" as it comes at you, meaning neither of you ever actually hit the other. On the one hand it protects you from whatever they're casting at you, but it also means you never do any damage to them unless you let them hit you and then shoot them in between their casting the spell.

    It bears mentioning that the most powerful weapon in the game is a set of five arrows, the "Ebony Arrows of Slaying" which are enchanted to deal a massive 5,000 damage to health on hit. There are only five of them, and they're located in a hollowed out stump on the east side of Thirsk Mead Hall on Solstheim. They're pretty much a guaranteed kill on any target, as long as that target can't resist the magical effect. And if your target has a reflect spell up, you WILL die.

    Just to let everyone know, the Code Patch does have an option to allow you to enchant stacks of arrows/bolts, and it gets multiples at a time. It does warn you that this feature is probably not very balanced, though. You really should be using the Code Patch regardless of whether you use that option, though. It fixes so many things that are really damn annoying, and the .exe allows you to pick what things you want the patch to change. It's also incredibly easy to use. Just start up the .exe, choose among the different patches you want using the detailed descriptions of what each does (or just hit the patch button if you want all the bug fixes and nothing else, as they start selected and nothing else does) and tell it to patch the game.

    From some reddit thread i stumbled upon
    "once you're at level 35-40 marksman, grab a thousand cheap stars and go fight the orks on top of one of the strongholds. low damage and high rate of fire means you will level amazingly fast. just run around with yor fatigue up, pinging your chitin shrapnel off of the orks very effective medium armour. don't worry about taking too much damage, the tiny stars not only tickle the target, they also stagger them too. with a hit-rate of about 60-75% you'll feel confident enough to remove your armour :) or equip a shield. that's right, you can block while using thrown weapons.
    at higher levels, with the dwemer darts from the ruins under mournhold you are able to absolutely obliterate anything in your path. even almalexia.
    things to watch out for, are obviously keeping a supply. there are vendors in convenient places that stock a respawning supply, and thrown weapons have a higher chance of being recovered after combat.
    the dwemer darts arer sold by no vendors, but the baddies that drop them respawn and are easily farmable. the dwemer dart is all about damage. think it does a flat 50-50. with the other darts, nothing can compete. the rapid fire of a mass of the cheap ones will stagger an enemy to the point of immobillity. casters can't cast, ordinators can't ordinate. if you normally run with a bow and hit a point where you're dying before you can get a third shot off, switch to chitin stars and taste god mode :)"

    • @LyleShnub
      @LyleShnub  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm pretty hesitant to recommend thrown weapons to new players. Tribunal definitely has some real powerful ones (spring darts are like 50-100 dmg), but like the thread you've referenced said, you've got to manually farm them. It can be a fun way to roleplay or what have you if you want to play your character as a thrown weapons specialist, but ultimately there's way more effective ways of stun-locking enemies or just remaining undetected altogether via stealth/chameleon

  • @jaernihiltheus7817
    @jaernihiltheus7817 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    Morrowind's Marksman is.... DA BEST!!! But also the most difficult weapon style to use (without relying on magicka anymore than necessary to play the game), and it's seemingly also very counter-intuitive.
    Melee is straightforward, simple, yet effective (with proper support of course), but takes the courage to run into a crowd of enemies and hack 'n slash/smash your way to victory (with a healthy dose of Restore Health/Fatigue Potions at the ready), as well as the ability to know when you come up against an opponent that you just can't beat.
    Magic is the most versatile as you can do almost everything, but it takes the forethought to come prepared, as you have to plan on possible reflect effects (fuck that shit), resistances, and of course what to do *when* you run out of magicka. (it's essentially like playing Pokemon, but you are both the Pokemon and the Trainer.)
    But pure *long range* stealth is tricky, as you essentially try to only use your weapons as a last resort, or to deal with enemies that you can't sneak around. You want to carry as a little as possible, so Bound Bow is your friend, and despite being considerably weaker than the rest of the Marksman weapons, Throwing Weapons actually serve this well; and Crossbows are really only meant for the bulky warrior-type classes that can afford the extra 30 or so carry weight, I advise against using them unless you're a warrior class, or a warrior-stealth hybrid class. Long range stealth is about controlling distance, getting the highest crit damage possible, keeping yourself as lightweight and mobile as you can, and *ALWAYS* keeping multiple entrance and exit strategies in mind at all times (when you can that is).

I'm playing in the evenings and binge listening all your stuff when I'm at work ^^ I especially like your formula breakdowns, knowing how much is happening behind (and how similar it is to my beloved DnD) makes the terrible 'random hit chance' bit less annoying.

    That was sooo fun...i remember one of my most OP characters being an archer/caster that used "paralyzing aoe arrows"...basically arrows that did something like 30-80 damage + 50 poison damage + paralyze for 10 seconds in 20 meters of the area of impact...i just went around the ashlands and cliffracers couldn't even see me before they were super dead

    The Marksman skill, like so many other skills in Morrowind, can B frustratingly difficult to improve until U learn the quirks in the game that can B exploited to your advantage:
    - Trainers charge less gold per "lesson" when the selected Skill is low. Therefore, if your Character build starts off w/ a very poor Marksman Skill rating it's cheaper to pay for a few "training sessions" in the early game B4 U decide to raise your Marksman rating much higher.
    - Morrowind has several "Bound Bow"-enchanted bows scattered throughout the game world. When the bow is equipped, invoking its enchantment (which is easy for PC gamers if they assign it to a Weapon / Magic Hotkey) summons a Bound Daedric Bow in its place, giving the player a +10 buff to their Marksman Skill rating for 60sec! Just keep in mind that (a) this depletes the enchanted bow's magical "charge" temporarily after several uses (4 or 5, usually), upon which U can either Rest up or stop using the enchanted bow for a while until it "recharges" by itself, & (b) each use of the bow's enchantment counts as progress (by a small amount) towards raising your Enchant Skill by 1pt, which *could* B useful if U want to earn a Bonus Multiplier for your Intelligence attribute next time your character gets to Level Up.
    - As an alternative to the above strategy, magic-using warriors (i.e.: Battlemages & Spellswords) may choose to cast the Bound Bow spell instead (if & when they have the spell in their Magic List!) thereby gaining the same +10 Marksman buff as well as making Progress towards earning a Skill Pt for Conjuration (which in turn contributes to a Bonus Multiplier for Willpower).
    - OK, so your Character now has either a spiffy enchanted bow or the Bound Bow spell (or both?) -- but U still need plenty of ammo, especially if your Marksman Skill is pathetically low @ this point! If U haven't already amassed your own private stockpile of looted arrows, how will U B able to afford lots of arrows w/o spending a lot of gold?
    Well ... there's a hilarious exploit that takes advantage of the Barter Screen system (if your Mercantile Skill isn't too low):
    (a) 1st, locate a Vendor or Armorer who buys & sells weapons & ammo, preferrably someone w/ whom you're already on good terms (like a fellow Faction member) -- & make sure they have a *very* large supply of cheap (Chitin or Iron, usually) arrows, as in *hundreds* of arrows.
    (b) Next, select the Barter option in their conversation window & use the Select All option to choose the *entire stack* of cheap arrows from the vendor's "stuff for sale" window.
    (c) OK, so we almost certainly *cannot* afford to buy that many arrows (@ least not in the early game) but not to worry, because the game allows U to "change your mind" by un-selecting items you've previously chosen to buy!
    Now, use the Select One Only option (hold Ctrl then Left-Click for PC gamers) to "sell back" those same arrows *one @ a time* to the vendor ... @ a full 1 gold each! Normally if we sell back an entire stack of cheap arrows (which normally retail @ 1 gold per arrow) the sellback value would break down to a fraction of that ... but when selling back a single arrow *the game has to round up to 1 gold*. Keep using the Select One Only option repeatedly & (if your Mercantile rating is sufficient) the "you pay" number will go all the way down to 1 gold -- & you'll still have a stack of arrows to buy! Congratulations, you've "persuaded" the vendor into giving U a nice discount!
    [This exploit becomes even more ridiculously useful as your Mercantile skill increases. When dealing w/ a vendor who is stocked w/ a stack of 500 or more cheap arrows, using this exploit will allow U to purchase increasingly larger quantities of those arrows @ absurd discounts -- as low as 1 gold (but NOT zero; the game engine doesn't allow that) for a stack of a dozen or more arrows! Alternately, U can push this exploit *until the "you pay" amount goes below zero* (personally, I combine this w/ other purchases &/or sales during the same Barter session, but that's just me)!
    - Of course, it helps to have plenty of weak &/or slow-moving enemies for "target practice" -- 1 of my favorite choices is the coastline northeast of Suran (but beware the Cliff Racers; if U kill a Cliff Racer & leave its corpse alone, it won't B able to respawn for up to a few days).
    - If U aren't opposed to exploiting Morrowind mods, the "Realistic Practice Dummies" (name?) mod replaces all the static dummies in the Vanilla game (but *not* in any of the official expansions, last I remember) w/ identical-looking "creatures" that never move & don't fight back (plus 1 new dummy in the Excise Office dining area in Seyda Neen). Each of these replacement practice dummies has a *ridiculously* high hit-point rating, so U can wail on each dummy for quite a while B4 destroying it completely (especially if U R equipping a cheap weapon &/or using its weakest attack). However, the mod automatically "repairs" any damaged dummy (after about a week?) as long as it hasn't been destroyed, so I prefer to practice my weapon Skills on a dummy only until it is extremely damaged ... then move on to a different dummy. (Note: the "Welcome to The Arena!" mod also includes working practice dummies -- 1 set in each of the team sections in the Arena Bloodworks -- but those ones do NOT automatically get repaired!)
    Hopefully, the above tips will come in handy for any Morrowind newbies out there -- ALMSIVI!

    Just an "FYI" note... I was just enchanting some bows and noticed the Bonemold Bow actually has an enchant value of 4... NOT 40 as is listed on the UESP page. I bought both that one and a Daedric Bow because of the supposedly higher enchant value of the Bonemold Bow, but when actually Enchanting the bow in the game it only comes up as 4.0 (which is actually a lot more logical than being higher than the Daedric's 10.5).
    I'm using the Code Patch, so I dunno if that corrects a bug from the original game... I never played without the patch, so I don't know if the Bonemold Bow might have originally actually had a 40 value in the vanilla game.

    • @irisinthedarkworld
      @irisinthedarkworld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's probably the patch, on my vanilla game it has the 40 capacity
      it was probably changed to 4 because in the construction set every enchantment value is multiplied by ten times its in-game value (for whatever reason) so one of the devs accidentally placed an extra 0, and whoever was patching that probably thought that seemed out of place since bonemold things usually don't have high enchant capacities

    Long ago I played a marksmanship character myself, but I remember that something was strange about it: If I remember correctly it's possible to use ranged weaponry while diving, but the range is fairly decreased. Imagine the hilarious sight of a diving point blank archer =D

    at the start of the game I level athletics, acrobatics, and something that affects endurance till I reach 100 in athletics and acrobatics at which point if I get 100 endurance before that I just level luck since its a pretty useful stat. Since my favorite race to play is a nord, and I always take the lover sign for the plus 25 endurance I almost always get endurance to 100 at level 4 so I typically have to put some points into luck which does help with getting higher hit chances like it helps with everything else

    The best bow, the summoned one, even ad 10 pts to marksman. U can make an enchanted item whit summon daedric bow for 19 sec, that cost 1 point to cast, for the time it takes to vanish the enchantment its almost full again. It never brokes and u can one shot cliff racers from affar. Just asing the spell of the item on f1 quick comands.

      It's probably the best bow you can get until late game levels and you either find or create an enchanted one.

  • @silverjohn6037
    @silverjohn6037 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My personal experience is that ranged in Morrowind can be frustrating as you'll miss a lot until you get to 50 Marksman skill and 50 Agility. Unless you're making a stealth class Bosmer or Dark Elf it's probably better to avoid choosing it as a major skill and just pay for a trainer. Training ten points every level will guarantee a plus 5 to agility and by level 5 even your melee Nord or Orc will have a usable skill level.
    My preferred weapon is the Chitin Bow with an enchant that lets you summon a Bound Bow for 19 seconds. The Chitin Bow only does 1-10 damage so it's useful to raise the Marksman skill on mud crabs or Nix hounds (Morrowind skill ups are based on number of hits not the amount of damage done) but, if I run into something more dangerous, I can summon the Bound Bow (2-50).

    Thrown weapons do have a few positives.
    They're incredibly light weight, inexpensive, don't need another weapon to be launched, and are pretty fast. They're well suited for builds that will mostly rely on melee and magic as a way to harry opponents quickly; either when the player is taking the initiative, or back-peddling in retreat. I'm sure some people would still prefer a bow or crossbow in these situations with these types of characters, but I've always found this method effective.
    For a dedicated marksman, however, the damage just isn't worth it, unless you're using those disgustingly powerful Dwemer darts.
    Nice support weapons for a fighter or mage, not so much for dedicated archers (unless that's the kind of character you're role-playing, of course).

    BTW There is funny glitch with throwing daggers & shurikens, if you throw them at NPC who attack you barehanded he gonna throw those weapons at you :) but this dont work on yourself.

    One question about enchanting bows... I wanted to enchant my bow with a Constant Effect that would enhance the damage from hits, but wasn't sure exactly which attribute would produce the most damage. From the formula given in the video it appears the attribute to enhance would be the Marksman skill, not Agility or Strength, to produce the maximum damage from the enhancement.... would that be correct..?
    Also, I know that Attributes (Strength, Agility, etc) can go higher than 100, but is the same true of Skills like Marksman..? My Marksman is already at 100, so I wouldn't want to waste the enchantment effect if it's capped at the max.
    Then too, the problem with a Constant Effect is that it's pretty costly and only results in an improvement of 3 to whatever attribute, hardly noticeable in all likelihood. I could do it as a "Cast When Used" effect which would result in a greater benefit, but that would require casting it for just about every shot since there's no visible indication when a spell expires... kind of distracting in a battle I'd think.
    Lotsa decisions to make...

      The trouble is with their availability, especially if you're just beginning the game. I believe there's only a finite amount in the game of those high damage spring darts. So, at best you can stockpile them for a tough encounter, but otherwise you'll be going back to using worse thrown weapons. Bolts and arrows have similar problems (albeit to a lesser degree), but at least you can always count on having a daedric longbow or dwarven crossbow to fire weaker ammo from.

    • @Yotanido
      @Yotanido 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might want to watch the video on melee combat, it explains it in detail.
      Short answer:
      You have probably seen this video and how fatigue works. This applies to melee combat, too. If you are on 0 stamina, your hit chance is reduced by 25% (it's not 0, so you can still hit, though). With full stamina, you get a bonus of 25%.
      For spamming the weapon, it's also the same as with ranged combat. If you just click the weapon, you do the minimum amount of damage. If, on the other hand, you hold the mouse button down until the swing animation is finished, you do the maximum amount of damage. (See the tooltip for actual values)
      If you use short swords and daggers, this is likely not a huge problem. If you use long blades, blunt weapon, etc, though - it probably is and you can increase your damage output quite a bit just by not swinging as often ;)
