Tanya was only 13 when she recorded this and fans thought she was grown from only hearing it on the radio! Her voice was very mature.
I was 7 when that song hit radio waves grew up listening to her too! Many other favorites. Georgia Sun was blood red and going down and Brown eyed handsome man.
Enjoy your content. Basically the song is about jilted love. A handsome stranger comes to town, seduces her, tells her he is going to take her away, but skips town. Probably happened when she was young and now she still shows up in town everyday looking for him to take her with him. That's why everyone thinks she's crazy.

In 2020 at 61 y.o Tanya finally won her very first Grammy with her song "Bring my flowers now" a song she wrote with Brandi Carlile. If you haven't heard it, it's definitely worth a listen.
She actually won 2 grammys, in2020, best country song, and album.
Seriously, that song is gorgeous. And Tanya’s voice is like aged whiskey in older age. So much life has been lived. And you can hear that and feel that in her voice. Bring me flowers now. It’s definitely worth a listen 🥰

Had the voice of a hard-livin' woman when she was a teenager, and she's still putting out music! One of the queens of country music.
I ran into Ms. Tucker when I had walked into a restricted area at the San Antonio livestock Show and Rodeo in 1985 or so, I was showing a pig that week. I was standing behind her, didn't know who she was and asked what all the excitement was about. She turned around and looked at me and said she didn't know. She smiled. I smiled. A crush began, lol. She was really nice and sweet as we spoke for a few minutes then they escorted her into the arena to perform. Someone finally came up to me and told me it was Tanya Tucker. Doh.
The man who wrote this (Alex Harvey)wrote it about his mother. She was a beautiful young girl from a very strict family. His father came into town very shiny & seemingly wealthy. He was in fact a con man or "a man of low degree' & broke his mom's heart. She never stopped believing in him & eventually passed away when Alex was still young. He wrote this while dealing with her death.
*Fun fact: I was named after this song! It was on the charts (by Bette Midler) during the year that I was born & my mom loved it. I always told her that she had cursed me with the lyrics! 😂😂

It's about time she's recognized, for CM hall of fame, she deserves it, and long time coming.
Listening to the cover by Home Free and Brooke Eden, I found out that songwriter Alex Harvey wrote this song in memory of his mother who like the character of this song, was misunderstood. Also, it was therapy for him after his mother's death. Tanya 's rendition is the second release, the first time it was done by Bette Midler,later it was done by Helen Reddy.
Helen Reddy must be the version I knew.
None of them could sing it like she did at the age of 13. She took it to the Top! Jamestown Ferry is another good one.

She was such a badass. Even the way she bowed at the end is fascinating. Check out a much later hit of hers that is also just a fantastic song, and it is called, Strong Enough to Bend. This song got played at a lot of weddings and the like. It's fantastic.

Yes. This. Love you're reactions, this is definitely a classic. The craziest thing she was like 13 or 14 when this was recorded. Long story short it's about a failed love with a man and she's middle aged but noone will love her because of her past. At least that's what I gather from the song. Like others have said. When she was young, She fell in love with a man, who wasn't well thought of. He promised to marry her, left town & never came back. Delta Dawn was on Bette Midler's debut album in 1971. Tanya had a hit with it in 1972. Since wasn't into Country music at that time I first heard this song in 1973 by Helen Reddy. Yep, I still this 45 rpm.
My middle name is Dawn. So my grandma used to sing this song to me. But instead of delta dawn she would sing Jaci Dawn 😊 this song hits home for me.

I think Bette Midler was the first to sing it. The next year Tanya had a top ten country hit with it and the following year Helen Reddy had a US Number 1 hit with it. Reddy is who I think of when this song is mentioned.
