Great song by Reba. But I agree with other comments ... The Night The Lights Went Out In GA... And talking about pipes , if you looking for a lady with pipes Martina Mcbride has the pipes , just pick any one of her songs and you got pipes

This song was written by Bobbie Gentry, the lady who wrote and sang Ode to Billy Joe, and she had a hit with it around 1970, I think. Reba covered it in the late 1980s and it went to the top of the charts. There are some wonderful female country wester song writers out there including Dolly Parton, June Carter Cash and Loretta Lynn. You might check out some of those, especially Loretta Lynn who wrote some songs like You Ain't Woman Enough to Take my Man. The Pill, and One's on the Way. These women were telling some nitty-gritty female stories and they really stirred things up. Loretta Lynn especially was always in trouble for writing songs that were considered almost pornographic to the powers that be in Nashville at the time.
Wooo, truly one of the Queens of Country. Just love her. And she's the sweetest person ever. She used to live about 20 minutes from me in Tennessee, and she was fabulous with the fans. Just a beautiful, sweet, kind, and gracious lady. She's another one who's got some great lyrics in her songs.

Hi Britt, I just found you today. I LOVE your reactions and comments. So, I heard you react to Bobbie Gentry ode to Billy Joe. At the end, you said you wanted to hear more of Bobbie Gentry and so I spoke to you on the screen and said FANCY! You’ve got to hear her song fancy! It is pure BOBBIE GENTRY! Then I discovered later on that you had done a reaction to Reba McEntire’s version of fancy. I love Reba McEntire. Bobby’s version is pretty straightforward and she is an amazing songwriter. Reba’s is fabulously theatrical and highly charged and it’s fantastic. I saw her perform it in concert many years ago. Keep up the great work. 😊
Learn a song and sing it to her. I agreed. She brought me a double album of Marty .I learned that song and sang it while she was working. She stopped long enough to listen When I was finished. I was tears going 😭 down her face, she hunger my neck, kissed me on the cheek. And told me thank me, that meant a lot to her wiped her eyes and went back to work. I knew I had done a good thing,. It is interesting that there are people who didn’t know Reba was a country star and only knew her from her sitcom. Although I do believe Reba sang twice on her show (a lullaby to her granddaughter at the end of season 1, and a song for an old boyfriend and/or band mate - the Carole King song “So Far Away”). The ladies on the show also sang “9 to 5” as karaoke at some point, but that wasn’t Reba singing seriously.
I work in live music (based out of Nashville) and met Reba once in passing backstage at the Country Music Awards. I said "How are you doing, miss Reba?" And she said in the countriest voice you'd ever hear "Lord, I feel like an old sow that's been stuffed in an expensive dress.", and we both just laughed.
So proud to be a fellow Okie of Reba! She is the queen of country. The song is about a girl who was basically sold of by her mother in order to give her a better life and she’s coming back home.
They used to make videos that were like mini movies. She does Does He Love You with Linda Davis who sounds almost exactly like Reba. Reba has many great songs.
When I was a teen at my church camp, I felt bad for a girl who was named Fancy. Everyone thought it was so funny to sing this to her. Reba is a fellow Okie, amazing voice.
Another great reaction. Reba is one of the true Queens of Country. She has so many great songs it would take all day to list them. And she can tell a story with her songs with the way she sings and expresses them as well if not better than pretty much anyone in any genre of music.
I first saw her perform this song in Summer 1990, at Cheyenne Frontier Days. I'm not sure if it was part of her show before, or not. Even then, she'd already had a decade or more of hits to draw from, and had put on a phenomenal show!
Reba has been a huge star in country music for years. Reba did not write this. This was written by an incredibly talented singer/songwriter name Bobbi Gentry. She was such a talent as well. Bobbi had several hits including one called Ode to Billy Joe which spawned a movie of the same name. Bobbi was writing and producing her own music back when most women were not given that opportunity. You should listen and watch a vid of Bobbi doing Ode to Billy Joe. What a voice. While Reba is an amazing talent most of her big hits were songs written by or even having first been recorded by other people. Reba had a big record with The Night the Lights went out in Georgia, which had been recorded previously by Vicki Lawrence. Doesn't take away from her talent as a singer and performer though. reba got her start (aside from church etc) at the rodeos. She was a barrrel racer and would sometimes sing before or after the events were run.
Thanks, enjoy watching you, brings back good memories. Saw her in 1990 with her fantastic band for the Rumor Has It tour. Most of her band was killed shortly after that in an airplane crash outside of San Diego March 1991. Check out her shows from 1990 with that tour, she was stunning.
Reba i awesome! She sings, she acts, and she creates these videos that are more like small movies. I am a big fan. It is totally worth going down this rabbit hole
Here’s the thing with just about all music especially country there is so much more than just what is played on the radio. Many of my favorites aren’t even singles. If you want Reba you need to go down the rabbit hole and listen to all her songs. Idk how much you’re into country but there is a song for every emotion, every type of pain, every milestone, and many more, in some manner a country song can resonate with a person if they just listen to the lyrics.
Most Country music songs consist of stories set to music (some stories better than others, some music better than others). You did hear Reba sing because everytime you watch the show Reba you heard her sing the opening song to the show. In fact that's one of the songs on one of her CDs and the song is called I'm a survivor. In the last episode of the first season you also heard Reba sing the lullaby to her granddaughter.
Reba has a singular voice and yes - she is a fantastic storyteller. Even though this song was originally written and sung by Bobbie Gentry, Reba really makes it her own. Reba was also one of the first country artists to really embrace making music videos. (Previously, music videos were more of a rock music thing.) Reba had a lot of wonderful music videos and they are all worth checking out, but Fancy is one of a few “mini-movies” she made - videos that had dialogue before, during, and/or after the song.
The original version of this song was done by the great Bobbie Gentry. While I love Reba...no one can sing this tune like Bobbie. You should check her out. Bobbie Gentry wrote and sang this song. Bobbie Gentry is a fascinating person. She basically wrote and performed two songs, Fancy and Ode to Billy Joe, until she got enough money to be a producer.
