Tumalo Mtn SOTA | Beginner CW Practice | Summits on the Air

  • Hiked up Tumalo Mtn with Roscoe the Dog for some ham radio fun. I got a boat-load of morse code contacts and some Summits to Summits. My CW is slowly getting better. I gave a stab at including translations of the code for other beginners to practice on. Some callsigns took me longer than it should. Always a little harder in the field.

    Thank you for posting this! I just finished my first CW ops class. I got started in sota last year with my icom 705 and doing single side band. I had a goal of wanting to start to do activations this year using CW. It’s nice to be able to close my eyes and try to decode the signs, that’s still kind of tricky. It’s also good to know that if you only get the first couple of letters, people are still patient with you. 73, K7AMJ

    Still working through this video with my eyes closed, and just hearing it. TY for sharing the views and the early CW for those who haven't mastered. I still can't yet imagine being on the receiving side of blind callsigns, on top of various band conditions. Hope to catch you sometime soon on a summit. 73's.

      I love to hear that you're using this video to practice. I'm slowly getting better at callsigns. I still miss a lot of the middle part of the QSO. I can pull out signal reports and calls though.
      My CW Academy instructor mentioned something that I really like: A quick QSO is like passing someone on the street and saying "hi how're you". You might not hear the whole interaction, but you walk away knowing it was a friendly one!

    Sweet video. I'm glad your showing your CW. Most people would cut most of that out. It really shows real world CW contacts and some of the beginner struggles. I'm a new CW operator and going through the same things. Keep it up. I enjoy the videos. I need to put you in my ham alert for next time your spotted. 73 Kyle AA0Z

    Nice to see people slowing down and spacing on their repeats, especially the S2S. I used to panic when I'd get a S2S call. Lol! Working SOTA and POTA has me up to 25-27wpm now. Nothing like getting on the air to help your CW improve. I still activate around 18-20 so as to not scare off new operators. Keep up the good work!
    BTW at 10:04ish he's sending you a 56N, not 54N. 👍

      I don't know to many, people but definitely it's my goal to knock out all three classes this year so I can have access to all of the bands. I mainly want to get into it strictly to do more with littlest equipment and kg6hqd videos inspired me to get outdoors seige it to have fun. Since then I became obsessed with it, watching ppl on TH-cam get out there with a rig and I want to do the same.

    I'm hoping to do CW on the air one day soon. Have been practicing copying a lot but it's so hard. Especially copying call signs. I see people are really patient when you ask them to repeat their call sign. Are they usually this patient? If they are, it'll make a lot less nervous about trying it out.

    • @N7KOM
      @N7KOM  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. If you are doing a SOTA, put something like "first CW, big spaces pse" in the comments field. Run at a slower wpm speed and chasers will slow down for you.

    What does 'DE' mean in your initial CQ? Does that mean FROM since your call sign was after.
