N7KOM Mountaintop Portable Radio
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 16 ก.ค. 2006
Welcome to my channel! I live in the PNW and like most people here enjoy a myriad of activities: hiking, cycling, skiing, climbing, mountaineering, etc etc etc. Recently, I got my Ham radio license and shortly after I learned about Summits on the Air. I'm already going up mountains, why not bring my radio along?
I'm currently learning morse code. My head copy needs a lot of work, but I've managed a few CW QSOs with the help of patient stations sending their calls over and over. Thank you for taking the time to QSO!
We have a great SOTA community here in the PNW. I enjoy making friends on the air and sharing my SOTA fun though these videos on TH-cam. Thanks for watching and see you on the air!
Thanks for stopping by. A great way to support the channel is buying some QRP & Ham Radio stickers: www.etsy.com/shop/N7KOMPortableRadio

Whoah! Cool to hear myself keying from the other side! Also, OMG, I really was booming in! 40 was working last night!
Sorry I had my radio was a bit too far off frequency! I didn't recheck the spots.
@@N7KOM Well, now I know why I should open my filter! Also, I don't know how my preamp got turned off. Weird.
@VoiceOverTrailReviews I turn mine off of im getting pummeled with a bunch of high power stations, but yeah, most of the time it's on.
I think you should leave sharp metal objects sticking out of the ground. It deters children.
We drill a hole into a golf ball for that same propose
Nice!
Solder a smooth copper ball to the top 👀
😆
Usually i put the grounding rod underneath the ground about 1' then cadweld 2guage wire to it
Grounding rods are well dangerous. My mate had a mate whose dog died because there was a lighting strike, like 200 meters away or something, and a ground rod killed his dog.
Rod go deeper
Maybe pound your ground rod all the way in like your supposed to
I think your ground rod isn't deep enough.
Article 250.53. Ground rods need to be 8 feet in the ground
I think you should put it in the ground. Like all the way, they make a drill that pounds a 7-8 foot rod in 30 seconds or so. Pound it down just enough for the acorn nut to be their bonus points if you bury it fully and bury the ground wire. If that one is stuck on a rock or something, a pipe wrench pulls them out pretty well.
We have solid rock under 18" of soil. This one is pretty far down considering. Plus I want the connectors above the snow level in the winter. I will bury any actual ground wires👍
@@N7KOM bury it sideways 18 inchs deap
Why do you want the acorn above ground level?
Hi Tim, It's me again. Someday when you've got the time and you're not mountain climbing(!), how about a tutorial on how to get frequencies into the memories! I have R.T. Systems software for the FT-60, it works great for programming, but it is difficult for me to understand HOW to get those memories off the software into the FT-60 banks, 1 thru 7. I have freq's for 144 MHz, 220 MHz 440 MHz, Fire, Federal Fire, etc. I've been trying for a few days to understand how to do it with no joy. I was successful in getting 144 MHz freq's into BAND 1, but the others, into BAND 2 - 7 don't get added to the radio. Any help from you would be most gratefully received. 73 de Joaquin
Hi, Sorry I have not used the RT systems software. Chirp works well for programming and there are a few tutorials on TH-cam already.
Tim, I just read AND reread the R.T. Systems software instructions. Quite ambiguous in this matter. Slowly, reading the directions, I learned that the software DOES NOT move frequencies from the software to the FT-60 BANKS. This MUST be done manually. The language in the software instructions say, and I quote: "...The Programmer can be used to set up the memory bank assignments. It cannot, however, tell the radio which memory bank to use. That function is left to be done through the keys on the face of the radio." Meaning, this step must be accomplished MANUALLY, through the keypad on the FT-60. The software cannot do it.. I knew that I would finally understand. The wording made it [for me] difficult to understand. Now I get it! I'll have to load my 467 frequencies, one by one, into the BANKS. For a sophisticated software, this R.T. Systems FT-60 is a compromise in this matter. Many thanks for listening. I hope that this clarifies the matter for any others who think it's a "cut and past", from software to radio. It ISN'T.
Put a dime in it so it work and has a stop
Great idea!
They have a product for this called a rebar cap. It has more than just a bit of rubber between you and the impaling waiting to happen.
I would just use a file to round off the ground rod
Hey they make these for rebar on construction sites. They actually have a piece of metal in them for extra reinforcement 👍🏼
Should be easy enough to 3d print those
If that much of your ground is sticking up, you didn't go deep enough.
I try and mark magnets with a sharpie when it's critical that they oppose each other. Good on you for showing your mistake and everything. It makes for a better teaching experience. Good job. 🤙🏾
How do you handle when someone hunts you P2P with multiple POTA parks?
I think it would add those additional parks into notes fields. This is also not necessary as the POTA site connects Park to Park QSOs automatically.
Oh yes, I love learning about a topic. I definitely know everything about. ( joke no offense to creator)
I wondered how to count turns. Thank you!
Why does TH-cam randomly send me shorts about things I have no interest in? The algorithm is an arcane hunk of bullshit
Adam and Coors Light 👍 👍 looks like a blast! #SOTA
Just what I was looking for! Thanks!
Your KX2 looks jealous. I’m sorry, that sidetone is so yucky sounding.
Thank you!
wow
Awesome view!
I downloaded the editor and tried to open the "Top 500 POTA Hunters Morse Runner Database File " but the editor said it couldn't open it. Do you have some instructions on how to get around this. Also where do you find these call signs within the POTA app? Thanks
Thanks! Encouraging for me as a new ham. Working to learn Morse code so I can have fun too.
Beep beep beep 😂😂😂 beep
Tim, Great video. I am a visual learner and this is just what I needed. Many thanks and 73 de Joaquin Stay safe climbing!
Glad it was helpful! 73!
🔥❤👍
Do you have Build Instructions for that antenna on your homepage?
These are kits made by K6ARK. I don't know if he's offering them for sale yet.
He’s shown glimpses of it for a couple years but I haven’t seen build instructions yet.
I was your ten meter contact lol didnt expect to see that on a random video i clicked
🤘🤘🤘
Any band is the best when Adam or Tim are on it!
Amen! 😆
😂😂😂 love it !!! I sure do miss the North West .
You were laughing so hard at my phonetics that you dropped the camera! Hi hi😂😂😂
Congrats on MG! Baaaa

@@N7KOMthis reply lmao
😂
40 meter ssb is like breaking the emergency glass. If the band is open, someone will be there!
🤣
40 meters is overrun with a bunch of Useless Nets or POTA stations Day and Night and it’s a Waste of a great band.👎🏻💩
Hi Tim, I love the SOTA T-shirt. Are they for sale ? I know a couple of SOTA operators here in Ireland would be interested in them as well.
Hi, sorry, they are no longer available.
I’m probably in the minority but I love that side tone.
Yeah, I don’t like it. It sounds like Cartman’s sister.
Idk what this is but as a mechanic i like the process
It's a Morse code paddle for a small ham radio transceiver called the Elecraft KH1. Cheers! 👍
Great job with this! 2M cw/am?/ssb awesomeness in the palm of your hand. Would be great to see how you connect the key.
Found It! thanks for posting this will be handy
