N7KOM Mountaintop Portable Radio
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 16 ก.ค. 2006
Welcome to my channel! I live in the PNW and like most people here enjoy a myriad of activities: hiking, cycling, skiing, climbing, mountaineering, etc etc etc. Recently, I got my Ham radio license and shortly after I learned about Summits on the Air. I'm already going up mountains, why not bring my radio along?
I'm currently learning morse code. My head copy needs a lot of work, but I've managed a few CW QSOs with the help of patient stations sending their calls over and over. Thank you for taking the time to QSO!
We have a great SOTA community here in the PNW. I enjoy making friends on the air and sharing my SOTA fun though these videos on TH-cam. Thanks for watching and see you on the air!
Thanks for stopping by. A great way to support the channel is buying some QRP & Ham Radio stickers: www.etsy.com/shop/N7KOMPortableRadio

Lyons Peak Summits on the Air plus a Snow Cave!
In summer we beat the heat and headed down the Medicine Lake California. Lyons peak is one of several summits in the area. Thanks to Amy AG7GP for telling us about the snow cave on the hike up the mountain. Very cool!

2024 Oregon SOTA Campout | Summits on the Air
มุมมอง 1.1K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
In July of 2024 Summits on the Air Activators and Chasers alike descended upon Howard Prairie Campground for the annual SOTA campout. It was incredibly fun to meet and activate with some operators who I've only "met" over morse code. Southern Oregon offers many many wonderful SOTA opportunities. K6ARK and I hit up two on our drive down, then knocked out four summits west of Ashland on our first...

The W7O Campout was in full swing and I timed my summits just right to hit Mountain Goat on Mt McLoughlin (W7O/CS-001). An awesome crew joined me for the hike: N6RUN, N7NWT, and KI6SYD. We hit the trail just be fore 4am and summited just after 7am. We were blessed with wonderful weather on summit. Thank you everyone who QSO'd with me on the day and over last few years on my SOTA journey. SOTA i...

OK.. forgive the stupid question. I'm new to SOTA. Do the activators AND the hunters need to log their own contacts? I ask because with POTA the activators log everything and the hunters get the contact automatically added to their account. Just wanted to see if it was similar or totally different with SOTA. Thanks.
Hi there, SOTA is a totally different system. Chasers are required to log their contacts with Activators to earn Chaser points. It is not done automatically based off of the Activator's log. 73!
@@N7KOM Thanks Tim... I'll be listening for you out there! 73
This was awesome. Congratz!
I did not need any more incentive to buy more radio things. My credit card company thanks you.
😅
Aw crap
Posted some more details in the Slack. I don't want to sound alarmist, but change is coming.
That’s wonderful. Making America Great Again. God help us.
1:35 - Doggo ; just trying to scrunch up here....Owner - OK I GIVE UP!!!! LOL.
Lance is a ham.
Great review; thanks for making this. Anything new out to consider since making the video? BTW if you send your call twice in a row, it would help to add a bit of space between. 73 de Bill Alpert/ KG6NRV
I watched ‘cause the cave on the thumbnail reminded of the rabbit cave from Monte Python. But hey, summit activations are always cool to watch!
😆 thanks for watching.
Darn it , I keep missing you all on the mountain. 🏔️ 👍🏻
Next time!
Looks like a lot of fun with some great views!
It was! 73!
What do you mean no 2M QSO's, I heard a lots of Ole responses.
😆
Ralph sent me here.
Can I use a repeater frequency in memory that includes the offset and tone as the home frequency?
Did you ever get this sorted out?
This does not do anything!
I have cleared my memory and now I can’t get it to scan!
That’s a dummy load you just stuck to your metal roof…🤣
Tim, you need to start using SOTAmat. It is a lifesaver when you don't have cell service and when you do have cell service, it has some of the coolest functions, like simply sending "spots" via sms and immediately it gives you all the spots in the last hour over sms. In remote areas, it allows you to send pre-programmed messages to loved ones over HF which has been a an added safety for me. It will do everything your satellite communication device will do without relying on the satellite infrastructure. With SOTA Spotter going away, it is a good time to get on board. Paul VA6MPM
When I press BAND , it says NO BANK. And no my scanning is only doing memory scan… I want an all frequency scan. Love it that you’re in Idaho…I’m in Boise!
Ham2K Polo logger is awesome! Do it! Do it!
PoLo is😮awesome
the chimes are good though I think they've been around for a bit.
The morse sends "SOTA" when a new spot appears :)
@@N7KOM Yes! It's nice to have that going off in the background! :)
I believe the author of SOTA Spotter is SK and removed from the Play Store and so it won't get updated for these API changes 😢 I'm trying SOTA Activator and PoLo as replacements
😢 sorry to hear that. Maybe someone will take up the mantle.
Yes, SOTA Activator is the Android app that I have been using.
Money!
Ryan Reynolds?!

been thinking about doing this to my metal shop. I was wondering if it would be more beneficial to put it on the metal ridge cap. the trusses are also metal so the ridge cap is bonded to the metal roofing
Mine should definitely be higher. I'm going to be putting up a proper vertical soon though.
Nice 1 Thx 73..- From Belgium ON9DJ
Thanks!
Congratulations on 🐐 Crushing the S2S!
TU!
I think my last video was the VOTA video. I think Volcanoes On The Air sounds good, don't you? I love 15 minutes from one active volcano and about half an hour from the other. Hawaii is crazy. We get snow, too. It's nothing like this video, but I think you know what I mean. If you ever end up in Hawaii, come check out the Big Island.🤙🏾
what about the balance wires?
Just don't extend the top section. Easy solution, no modifications.
A mast stuck in a bush… hey now!
😆
Bravo 👏🏻!!!! Running & QRP ❤ 73/72
Congrats on the goat 👌
Thank you!
It takes quite a bit of stamina to keep on talking while climbing! Nice to see CW on 2m. 73 de Jon, VU2JO.
12:50 Hey I recognize that callsign! Peter has pretty much chased every sota activation I have even been on!
It was great to meet him in person!
Love it Tim, and great jobs capturing the amazing time we all had! Can't wait until next year!
And congrats on the Goat award
That looks like a really fun event 😁
Congratulations! 73, KF4LMZ

Thanks for sharing. Beautiful doggie!!
Thanks for sharing !
Congrats on the goat, Tim! Had a great time this year!
I’d be really concerned that I’d bend the crap out of those side pieces and make it unusable.
Hulk Fingers!
Congratulations on the goat! Had a great time. Thanks for posting the video.
Thank you!
Congrats on the goat, Tim! Looks like such an awesome time. Kind of wish I lived closer. Would love to be apart of that campout.
Now I'm jealous, kinda. Italy was great but this looks like a lot of fun being had.
Baaaaa! 🐐
Tnx for the video! Nice to see so much activators at one place! 73
Many thanks!
Is that Quangsheng mod for actual CW or is it MCW?
It is real CW, but there is also a separate FM Morse mode if you want to annoy your repeater friends 😆
@@N7KOM Excellent! Thanks for the FB vid, looked like a lot of fun. 73 DE NT7S
Nice Vid! Thanks for sharing and congrats again on the goattage!
