Fantastic first CW QSO. Man, that took guts to do it on camera and share it. Hats off to K7III for his patience with a new op. So awesome to hear. 73 de N4AAJ
10:40 - 10:55 My exact feeling last night. Mine was with a local friend on 40 m but sheesh was I nervous. Great Video. Keep it up brother! Thanks for the activations and hope to get you in the log. 73 DE KO4KKX
Thanks! I was pretty nervous calling CQ CQ... I missed a few stations that were just too fast. Luckily K7III has a great callsign for beginners to copy 🤣! Now that I've done a couple more activations, I find that I need to take a moment and relax. The characters come a little easier that way. 73 de Tim N7KOM
Congradulations Tim. I've been doing CW since 1960, and I still get excited about different contacts. and still screw up a lot. we all do. Tnx to K7III for showing the correct process when working a slower speed operator. slow down to their speed and more if needed. kudors to him for that. a pen and paper help tremendously when copying, and it creates a paper log also. One thing that helps newbies is if the op sends the RST acronym in front of the signal report/tone etc. it helps who ever is listening to know whats coming next in case they get lost they will recognize that easily. I think I got just as excited watching you work him as you did working him. fun thing to watch and enjoy. Thanks for being brave enough to jump right in and for the activation. GL and hope to work you myself sometime 72;73 de Ellis WA1RKS
Thanks Charlie. It was nerve-wracking getting OTA for the first time. Super grateful to K7III for his patience. He's got a great call for beginners! 73 de Tim N7KOM
Thanks! I have good days and bad days. Sometimes the callsigns come easy, otherdays it's just a jumble. Practice Practice Practice. Good luck with your POTA hunting. 73 de Tim N7KOM
Good job! I'm doing SOTA activations as well on 2m. I am enrolled in the 2021 autumn CW Academy. Hoping to start knocking out some chaser activity, and maybe an activation by Christmas.
Have fun with it. I admit, it was frustrating at times, but well worth it. Having classmates to keep me accountable to practicing every day was a huge help. Shoot me a message when you're ready to S2S! 73 de Tim N7KOM
Hi! How long had you been practicing cw before this first sota qso? I'm trying to learn now and it is HARD! But watching your video it encourages me to get on the air soon even with slow speed.
We try to keep the simplex frequency clear. Most activators in Oregon and Washington use 146.58. I will drop down to 146.52 if I'm desperate for a final contact or two to get the 4 needed for the points. Many stations are happy to QSO with a "Mountaintop Portable". 73! de N7KOM
Yes, I'm so grateful to him for being so so so patient on my first cw QSO. It really was a confidence thing: I wasn't sure what I was hearing was right.
Thanks! Just gonna keep practicing. I'm also lucky in that there is a SOTA summit 1.6mi and 525' gain from my house. Makes it easy to head up after work and pitch an antenna for some practice.
Many congratulations. The first takes more guts than you can imagine. K7III demonstrating the gentlemanly approach to Ham Radio. Impressive.
Indeed! I've improved a lot since this video. I hope to help other new cw ops get OTA sometime :D 73 de Tim N7KOM

Thanks for watching! Takes a lot of courage to get OTA for the first time. Hope this inspires other CW newbies to give it a try.

terrific video Tim 73
Congratulations. I'm in the same boat, I've been working hard on my CW. I've chased POTA and SOTA stations, but haven't done an activation yet.

I’m just about to test. Thanks for the motivation to go SOTA. K7III gives me faith I can do it too. 73
SOTA is a great way to get on the air with cw for the first time. Just need to copy callsigns and signal reports. GL! 73

Reminds me of me when I started CW. I sent a lot of "I'm new" messages. People were VERY patient and accommodating. 73! de KE5ES
Oh Roscoe! Always making his own path
Always :D
Right on! And you've since had many more CW SOTA contacts. 73, Rex KE6MT
Thanks for QSOing with me the other day! 73 N7KOM
@@N7KOM enjoyed it!
Good job brother and nice video keep going 😁
Thank you! I've come a long way since this video. I feel it's important to share these first steps to encourage others new to cw to get on the air.
The only thing to say is thanks to those fellows who desire to share their experience with novices. That's no common!
Amen! Grateful to the many ops who have sent their calls over and over as I piece it together on my qrp rigs. 72!
Hi! How long had you been practicing cw before this first sota qso? I'm trying to learn now and it is HARD! But watching your video it encourages me to get on the air soon even with slow speed.
Hi, I think this was about 3-5 months of dedicated practice. I was in the second CWOPs CW Academy course IIRC.
@@N7KOM Very nice! Ty for answering!
Good luck with your CW journey! It's scary, but SOTA chasers are patient and want you to have success!
Indeed! I made my first CW SOTA contact during my last activation and I was able to complete it! It felt like a huge achievement for me!

congratulations fantastic video 73 from kb2uew
Many thanks! 73 de N7KOM
Cw is awesome for pota sota. Keep practicing. Morse runner is good software and ninja Morse lessons.
Thanks, it is going to be a long journey. I really appreciate all the help and support fellow hams have been. 73 de N7KOM
@@N7KOM I started in January with lcwo website. Just started pota Cw only this month. Usually around 15wpm. Thomas Witherspoon has a great channel too
Congrats! How long had you been learning cw before this? And, what transceive are you using?
I think I was maybe a month into the CW Academy basics course.
Transceiver I used for this was a LNR Precision FX-4A.

What frequency do you typically use for 2m? I’m assuming it’s .52 but I would imagine that would interfere with other SOTA activators.
We try to keep the simplex frequency clear. Most activators in Oregon and Washington use 146.58. I will drop down to 146.52 if I'm desperate for a final contact or two to get the 4 needed for the points. Many stations are happy to QSO with a "Mountaintop Portable". 73! de N7KOM
well done, congratulations. Very nice of K7III to enlarge his spacing to make it little less difficult. 73 de ON4MGY
