Yes!!! And there are still lots of fully mechanical diesels on the road today. Ford/IH 6.9/7.3 IDI’s, GM/Detroit 6.2/6.5, VW’s 1.5/1.6, the list goes on. They’re slow but they never stop.
And then the stupidcharger, I'm curious to see some efficiency numbers with that for sure! And I think the acceleration is going to be a rocket by comparison. Should make gobs more torque comparatively.
Isuzu TurboDiesels are a good swap for 1st generation Honda insights. I’m specifically talking about the engine that was offered in the Isuzu Gemini/I-Mark Turbo Diesel, or the Diesel Chevette. Also, the 2.4L I4 Mercedes-Benz Diesel that was offered in the 240D. Those are extremely tough little engines, and you can turbocharge them, preferably with something smaller than the KKK turbocharger used for the OM617, so the same one used with the Isuzu’s would make a good fit.
i absolutley love what you are doing! You talked about Supercharging or Turbocharging the little Kubota diesel, but why not both? let the Turbocharger feed air into the Supercharger, because of the initial Supercharger boost the Turbo will spool quickly and will maybe produce more boost than on the "Turbo only" setup you tried.
A good idea but could be tricky to set up. Once the turbo comes on boost you really need a spring loaded flap to bypass the blower. It needs to be adjusted in a way allows a smooth transition so there's some boost from the supercharger and some from the turbo before the turbo takes over the full duty. Also there's the possibility at low RPM the blower will open the bypass flap unintentionally backfeeding boost so it could be a bit tricky as mentioned. Detroit Diesel 2 strokes that have a turbo, still retain the blower (the blower is not a supercharger in Detroit Diesels but it is the same blower that is used as a supercharger in hot rods). These turbo versions have a special blower called unimaginatively, a by-pass blower. The bypass arrangement is built into the blower body and is unique to the turbo variants. The blower lobes still rotate though but the by-pass blower saves 30% engine pumping losses by being bypassed. EMD 2 stroke Diesels if turbocharged have a hybrid centrifugal supercharger/turbocharger arrangement. At low rpm the compressor is crank driven but as RPM rises an exhaust turbine starts driving the compressor via an overrun clutch. In certain circumstances like high load and low RPM both the crank and the exhaust turbine drive the compressor but these are mid sized Diesel engines with a max RPM of around 1000.
@@ThePaulv12 i would try this setup without bypassing the supercharger. Keep it simple, maybe its not the most efficient way but iam pretty sure it will work. There are twincharged diesel setups wich are using super &turbocharger without bypassing der supercharger (banks Power did a setup like this)
@@ThePaulv12 There is no need to have a switchover of boost. If the turbo feeds the supercharger, it basically only sees a larger engine and works as usual and if the turbo is too big for the engine right now, you pretty much must feed the supercharger to keep the operational point on a good spot on the compressor map. The other way around it would indeed be much more problematic. The biggest issue to consider is that as chargers are pressure multipliers, you might get pretty crazy boost levels if you're not careful. Even then, the wastegate would work pretty much normally though. However the supercharger bypass would reduce drag load on the crank at high RPM.

Before I had a lift I came up with a system for under-car work and while it was no lift, it was a lot better than crawling around on your back or belly. When I hit 40 I started to come away with bruises on my back every time, so things had to change. I bought 4 of the truck style 6 ton jack stands, then I put a pair of wooden 4x4 blocks under the legs to give that extra 3.5" of lift and it made it so I could sit up under the car on a creeper, plus the stands in my opinion were actually more stable on the blocks (not advice, do at your own risk). I pulled a front drive engine out the bottom this way and actually had to lower the car a bit to get the trans floor jack high enough to drop it out it was so high. It worked fantastic and no bruises on my back and shoulders. Poor man's mid lift.
You should block charge that little Kubota. The Detroit diesel I had in my wrecker had both a supercharger and a turbocharger. 8-71 blower with a huge snail sitting on top of it.
I had an Aisin AMR300 supercharger on my riding mower at my ex wife's house. It couldn't handle the tall grass and she refused to let me buy a JD 1025R, so I grabbed the AMR300 and a cheap welder and made some ugly welds that did the job. more great work on the exhaust.. i doubt major manufacturers devt teams can turn around this quick.... though Jimbo doesn't have dozens of committee's to get approval from
The engine/transmission/chassis combo seems really nice. And wow that straight pipe is so loud.. People must be pretty confused when they hear boy racer noises coming from an Insight, especially with half its body panels missing and doing 20mph 😆
Muffler idea, get the longest straight through glass pack available preferably by thrush at the auto store. You'll be amazed how quiet it will be on the diesel little to no restriction.
Great to see it's working out so well. All that preparation and experience pays off again. :) I didn't know the first-gen Insight had a reputation for being uncomfortable. It's a little loud on the highway and sits a little low to the ground, but I've done cross-country trips in one without issue or pains. My main complaint is that you can't tilt the seats back very far so sleeping in it is less convenient than other cars.
I love the way it sounds 🤪 You made incredible work on this car and I'm always happy to see new content on this little insight!! Awesome and thank you 😎

Don't expect boost to add power to a diesel unless you add more fuel. This is generally done with a diaphragm or actuator that moves the rack to add more fuel when pressure is applied. It will clean up the exhaust though.
The early MD series of Volvo Penta marine diesels even have a hand crank starter in case the starter motor fails. Perfect for surviving the zombpocalypse.

Yep. K swap had me ROFLING! But this vehicle I believe, is a genius stroke!
I came across RC at the end of the 470cc? Insight. Watched it every week since! Great channel Jimbo! 👍🇦🇺
I think you are going in the right direction with engine temps. Wet sleeve diesels like to run hot. Make it so, captain.
I'm looking forward to seeing the continued development on this project. It will be especially interesting to see how the blower works with the diesel engine. Thank you for taking the time to share your journey with us.
It's Sunday Morning, I just got back to civilization from a little backpacking trip, and our Jimbo is busy wrenching on the Oil Burner Insight. Life is pretty damn good.
As someone who has also spent decades working on cars barely a foot and a half off the ground, my back aches for you man lol. Someone donate Jimbo a two-poster, stat! Keep up the good work, ya’ll make Sunday mornings more enjoyable.
The Honda is a great choice for this series of tests. I love seeing your videos as a retired mechanical engineer. Well done sir!
Thank You Jimbo. The puppies and I enjoy our Sunday mornings watching you.
This diesel make an incredible V6 Sound !! At 4000RPM it’s amazing !!!
Like the little stab at your county road MT group with the phantom snow plow crack.
Damn the Ku swapped Honda Insight sounds unbelievable good, the exhaust note is perfect
13:36 waiting for VTEC to kick in 😁
Variable Throttle Exhaust-Carbon 😂
more great work on the exhaust.. i doubt major manufacturers devt teams can turn around this quick.... though Jimbo doesn't have dozens of committee's to get approval from
I love this project...
Easily one of the best car related channels on youtube, keep it up Jimbo
The engine/transmission/chassis combo seems really nice. And wow that straight pipe is so loud.. People must be pretty confused when they hear boy racer noises coming from an Insight, especially with half its body panels missing and doing 20mph 😆
Confusing people is what we do best!
Thanks for the ride along Jimbo.
Quickjack needs to see this comment! This guy needs one for your jack guys!
Muffler idea, get the longest straight through glass pack available preferably by thrush at the auto store. You'll be amazed how quiet it will be on the diesel little to no restriction.
You could easily put that on the road again and have a hyper miler to drive around town, heck you could even do short highway trips.
The exhaust drowns out the diesel rattle, well done!
I didn’t see one single snow man! 😢. Great progress so far on the build.
The k swap had me dying 😂 and with that exhaust it sounds so angry!
Great to see it's working out so well. All that preparation and experience pays off again. :)
I didn't know the first-gen Insight had a reputation for being uncomfortable. It's a little loud on the highway and sits a little low to the ground, but I've done cross-country trips in one without issue or pains. My main complaint is that you can't tilt the seats back very far so sleeping in it is less convenient than other cars.
I love the way it sounds 🤪
You made incredible work on this car and I'm always happy to see new content on this little insight!!
Awesome and thank you 😎
If you use an Apex bit adapter, stock them up and put your universal bit in that I had to use a stack of them that was almost 1 and a 1/2 long.
So happy you decided a amr500. Currently trying to build a 459cc predator with a amr300. Love the series. Keep up the good work 👏
Laughing my butt off after hearing your comments about snowplows, we have a similar problem here in Oregon, there are only a few plows, because we Oregonians don’t know what snow is!
14:00 that raspy resonance you get from the exhaust kinda reminds me of my car👍
That is so awesome how this engine "shows its pleasure" at first start up. 😌
A VP racing jug with the flexible pour spout works a LOT better than a funnel for fueling at home.
Loved this video as usual. This is my favorite show to come out. I just love the concept of ringing out all the power you can get from a tiny package. I really want to see this Honda take a long distance road trip to see if all these mods hold up.
Looking forward to many more of these projects, thanks Jimbo and crew
Don't expect boost to add power to a diesel unless you add more fuel. This is generally done with a diaphragm or actuator that moves the rack to add more fuel when pressure is applied. It will clean up the exhaust though.
The early MD series of Volvo Penta marine diesels even have a hand crank starter in case the starter motor fails. Perfect for surviving the zombpocalypse.
Robot Cantina time isthe only timeout and we make a breake in our little museums workshop.
Great video as allways greedings from Germany
Thanks again!
Great work Jimbo, not a gnome or gremlin in sight!
