      I remember as a teenager I always had an interest in cars but didn't know much of how to work on them. I eventually went to trade school for another mechanical field. I learned how to troubleshoot electrical. Once TH-cam came on the scene I started watching alot of auto mechanics showing how to work on vehicles. Now I am comfortable working on my own cars and repairing them when they break. Bottom line is keep watching channels like this one, Eric the car guy, and Mustie1. It's basically free schooling for being a mechanic. 🙂

      @classic Pontiac37 I'd recommend Fitzees Fabrication for any kind of rust repair if you haven't seen it. The guy is a great teacher.
      With TH-cam, I can't see people paying for a class. Watch a video, go out and do it. It's easy. From software engineering, to fixing a sink, to building an FIA legal roll cage, it's free. People are just lazy and need an excuse to go out and do something in my opinion.

    About shutting the engine off...
    I work as a Microcar mechanic, these are little cars in Europe that you don't need a full license for and use a variety of small diesel engines, one of which is a Kubota Z402 which has a very similar injection pump. On these microcars there is a solonoid which actuates the shut-off switch and it's a really simple system.
    This is probably the same in the small tractors that use this or a similar Kubota engine.

    on the front of the motor there is the fuel screw take it 1/4 turn richer and you will get 8hp-10hp more this engine had multiple power ratings all adjusted by the fuel and honestly you can go 3/4 turn anymore you run into area where EGT's become a bit of a issue and to go further you will need to turbo the motor and then you will be able to get way more than enough power to run 75mph or more.

      Yes and no all mechanical diesel engines when loaded from a idle will puff a slight bit of soot its more when your 1/2 throttle or so and you give the beans does it throw soot and if soot goes away shortly after you give the beans to it again mechanical diesels have a mechanical fuel governance in the injection pump basically a puff of soot is normal if its a constant soot you got to much.

      I believe that engine has what’s called a jerk pump! I don’t think there’s a provision for adjusting the fuel setting. You could pull the pump, and put larger plunger and barrels in it. What he’s talking about in the video is governer settings. Increasing the rpm’s. Differant thing. And even if you can adjust fuel. On that small of an engine, you can’t adjust too much. Minimal hp gain, lots of black smoke.

    • @rickcooperjr62864
      @rickcooperjr62864 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He is adding a turbo so the added fuel is needed and yes there is a fuel adjustment and just so you know that motor was sold in several different power outputs only difference was fuel delivery increase there is currently like 5-10 hp on the table just by upping fuel and once turbo is added well that # will double.

If you do that make sure you don’t over rev it cause it will bend a push rod lol.

    Jimbo, its clear to me you're applying several things you've learned on the insight on this car and it has made this series even more enjoyable!
    I can't wait to see what kind of tricks you pull out of your sleeve when you turbocharge this engine, especially for wastegate/boost control and pressure relief. I'm sure you already have tons of ideas.
    I am going to give you some brain waves I had for adding vacuum the brake booster that I am sure you've already considered. First, electric vacuum pumps will work great for creating a vacuum source, however, it would be an idea to get a vacuum canister to supply the vacuum to the booster. LOTS of forced induction cars use this, and even some cars use this for locks, 4-wheel drive actuators, and even headlights and wipers/cowl actuators(Damn you GM and the C3!). If you need any help sourcing OEM components I would be happy to help. There are also belt driven vacuum pumps that have been used on a lot of late model vehicles. I think this would be the most reliable vacuum source as they are 100% mechanical.
    Secondly, every vacuum brake booster usually has a check valve build in or has one in the supply. Provided the booster is in good shape, this would potentially reduce the need for constant vacuum, just something to keep in mind.
    Keep cranking out videos, can't get enough of these!

    Great stuff!
    A couple suggestions...
    Lose the paper inline filter back at the tank. They aren't rated for diesel and have very little surface area to be used as a primary filter. I use a Wix 33972 all-plastic filter for the pre-position. Its coarse at 50 microns, so it doesn't wad up quickly but will protect the pump from large debris.
    Under the hood, get a Kubota fuel pedestal from a U17 or U35 excavator, part #52200-26750 That will let you run a Wix 33390 final filter which is common and has lots of area and a 10-micron rating to keep your injectors happy.
    Don't expect much from that little permanent magnet alternator. They are only about 20 amps, I believe but are fairly reliable. It's not hard to mount up a 1 wire alternator or something from a Kubota machine to get into the 40-60 amp range which is more like what you'll need if you were to turn everything on at once.

    • @robotcantina8957
      @robotcantina8957  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the heads up on the filter. We did a video on the little alternator a few months ago and indeed thay make about 20 amps. 20 amps should be plenty for this rig. Keep in mind we put the car together for experiments and we will not be driving it at night.

      I also noticed your mechanical fuel pump block off plate. If you have any issues with fueling at or near the max power/redline, you can easily add a stock mechanical lift pump to get fuel through the system quicker and keep the injection pump filled. Many factory Kubota machines use the same setup, despite only needing to cover a couple feet of distance and often even with a slight gravity feed effect. Tank to prefilter/water catch, then an electric lift pump, then to the mechanical lift pump, then the final fuel filter and then the injection pump.

    For the fuel cutoff lever, I would use a 12v solenoid that pulls it to the RUN position when energized, and a return spring that pulls it the other way when the key is turned off. This way it can be fully operated with the key instead of adding some choke-type pull/push cable on the cabin.

    Adjusting the max governed rpm is simple and easy, but you will also have to shim the injection pump to bump the timing up for 3600 rpm operation. You will also have to adjust the torque screw, to give the engine more fuel per stroke. Also, that little electric fuel pump will supply plenty of fuel for the D722.
    I put a Kubota V1405 in a 1980 Triumph Spitfire. Added a turbo, injection pump camshaft advance timer, shimming the pump timing, and adjusted all three fuel delivery screws to make this engine rev to 4000 rpm, and produce 80 hp with 22 pounds of boost.

    A turbo and manifold for the D-1105T theoretically should work on your 722. But it’ll need some more fuel, and with that comes the need for a pyrometer, it’s much easier to put one in a manifold on a table than on an engine with the turbo already mounted, I wish someone would have told me that before I attempted it.

    The weirdest thing is to put the throttle to the floor, let it rev until it hits the governor, keep the throttle on the floor, push in the clutch and take your sweet old time to shift into another gear, let clutch out. Definitely a tractor! I had to add springs to the Kubota governor flyball unit to get it to see 3700 rpm. Mine was set at 1800 rpm to power a light tower. I used the engine mounted diaphragm fuel pump to provide vacuum to the brake master cylinder unit. Not bad, but way better than using 2 feet to push the brake lever. Keep up the good work!
