Bookshelves

  • My parents have a lot of books, and need a place to put them. They have a mostly clear 24 foot wall in their finished basement. We thought we would build a book shelf along that entire wall. I designed this shelf a little bit differently than is typically done. Normally you build a box or a frame and build shelves into that structure. If you want more shelves, you build more boxes. In this traditional design, you end up with a double layer of material between each set of shelves. In my design, I built the vertical piece as one layer and attached each section together in the center of the shelves. This reduced the amount of material we needed to buy to 9 sheets of pre-finished birch plywood and also gained 3 to 4 feet of shelf space.

Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves th-cam.com/users/postUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

That collections of books will rival most city public libraries. Good job on the construction. That was smart of you to enlist the aid of your mother to drill all the shelf pin holes. It now gives her an appreciation of how much work went into building the wall of book shelves.

Wow! Super MOM. Great project, Frank. I have about 10 sheets of prefinished maple ply waiting on me to produce cabinets. I designed the cabinets to surround our Theater Room screen using Sketchup. Then I imported the Sketchup file into Aspire and produced the CNC vectors and toolpaths. I just need two more hands to load these sheets onto the CNC. I have been waiting just over a year so far. Wish I had mom like you :)
