    For anyone wondering what the whirring noise is, that's the lathe speeding up/slowing down the rpms to match the surface speed for different diameters

    Beautiful work, thanks! Question: I'm surprised that you don't use a holder in the middle of the piece to decrease chatter, is there a reason it is ok for this particular piece? The machining of the shoulder portion at the end is really impressive.

    When you turned the shaft around to machine the leftover piece. How did you get the tailstock end true to drill a centre true to the machined shaft with that much stick out?

    • @lesliesoutham7396
      @lesliesoutham7396 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The centres are pre drilled before machining , check out a couple of videos back where Chris turns a ring and you can see the centre inside of the Chuck.

    • @ChrisMaj
      @ChrisMaj  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most of the centers on a large pieces are done on a horizontal boring mill and I do have a center in the chuck, so basically I'm working between centers.

      It's not the machine then. It's the man running it. Mad skills to you for machining huge work pieces. Love watching you work brother. I've been in the game for 25 years and always worked on micro parts compared to your work.

  • @Alex73rus

    Hello, I often watch your videos, I learn something useful. Tell me how to avoid crushing the workpiece at a length of 1500mm and a diameter of 60mm when turning. There is a lunette, but it does not transmit the beating of the part to the cutter.

    Does this material distort too much after roughing?

    • @ChrisMaj
      @ChrisMaj  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4140 or 4340 doesn't really move much, but since I work without steady rest I did rough turned that piece and then came back with one more cut to eliminate any movement.
