When I was a young lad, Dad used to have a competition with me on who could get the longest swarf string with hand feed...nearly 60 and still use the same lathe...
Takes me back to when I operated a 48" vertical boring mill. We would get giant 2 part castings from the local foundry and "rough machine" the parts. The long hook to grab the chips of death was a reality.
I always compare mild steel and medium carbon, or alloy steel to Cheese, mild steel is a stringy cheese, medium carbon is a hard cheese 🧀. Added lead or sulphur is Parmesan 🤔 That bore looked to have a great finish though. Great vlog, thanks for sharing.
Nice work getting good finishes considering how stringy the chips were. We have the same issue with 2024 aluminum, it won't break a chip for nothing. Great video as always!
I've watched several of your videos where you have considerable stock to remove yet you take light cuts given the apparent size and power of the machine tools you're using. What spindle HP do you have available. (Couldn't stand it. Had to edit out my condescension.)
Well this machine is only 30 HP (22 Kw) most of my tools are 1.25"(31.75mm) and 1.00" (25.4mm) My average DOC is around 0.300"(7.6mm)FEED 0.025~0.030 IPR (0.635~0.762 mm/rev) I don't really do production work, it's mostly one-offs.
@@ChrisMaj OK. My bad. The spindle motor HP rules the productivity. Guess I was projecting. My previous (and unedited) comment looked snarky on second reading. Would you like me to delete it?

I get this a lot on Instagram unfortunately: you really don’t have all the info and you can’t be so damn sure about how things should be done!
All this video shows is that A27 is difficult to machine. It's super stringy steel. And for a one-off job, it doesn't make sense to go buy a whole new assortment of inserts with different chipbreakers.
50 years a toolmaker and here I am, retired watching machining videos.
I think it rubs on you. Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos, Chris.

Awesome videos !
Thanks 👍

I still get a little anxious when that tool jumps to position over a spinning lump like it does. Great vid as usual.
You get used to it in cnc after a while
sounds like a blanchard grinder ramping up to speed. awesome video!

What inserts and feed are you running?
Qué velocidad de corte en vueltas por minuto avancé por vuelta Gracias maestro
Nice work
Glad you enjoyed 👍
Hey you guys are doing amazing work. Where is your factory
Você também trabalha com torno mecânico convencional?
This was interesting to watch, thanks🙏
My doubt how 2nd side setting face true on butt on jaw face! How we know that is exactly butt all face use feeler gauge ?

How are the machine and tool loads on this machine? There's quite a lot of rotational inertia.
Czy to jest tokarka karuzelowa Goodway w USA znana pod marką Yama Seiki?
Dokładnie tak Yama Seiki GV-1600M
Out of curiosity, are there surface grinders for this rotary configuration in the industry?
That's all I found. I'm guessing that's what you meant. th-cam.com/video/Ujm2IX38miQ/w-d-xo.html
Why did you not finish the op 1 in the first place? I’m curious.
Were you afraid that op2 roughing would bend the wheel?
Yeah, there was a lot of material removed, so I rather rough out the part before finishing.
👍👍
I used to run 2 VTLs machining train wheels. No coolant. Dirty and very noisy.
bigger feed?
Hello
We have a request of wheels, for GH Bridge Crane
How contact to you?
Thanks
Vertical lathe. Tough machine.

nice job chris - looks like some terrible material haha

The video shows that the operator has little experience.
