The fact that for many this is seen as a profound statement is an indication of how much the ‘success’ mindset has poisoned the west. There is no longer a sense of humility, or at least when some is shown, we praise it as though this is a unique mindset that only the virtuous adopt. Everyone is struggling to better everyone else. It’s really sad

For all the wonderful musicianship in this, one of the most incredible gems any musician could ever find is buried in the dialogue when Chris says ‘I don’t mind, I don’t need to be the best’ after Jacob questions his humility. That shedding of an ego, encapsulates the key to opening every creative door imaginable.

    • @joelikesthings

Both Chris and Jacob are incredible. I think that the phrase, “I don’t need to be the best”, says so much: because I think people only say that in that way, if they’re the sorts of people whereby you have this burning desire to be great in the first place.
It would be impossible to become one of the most well known bands on Earth without working extraordinarily hard, and to see (rightly or wrongly) someone who you think eclipses you…I’m not sure how to describe it, but I’m sure it hit him right in the feels at that moment.
They are both brilliant, of course. I just think it’s a useful lesson for anyone: no matter how good you are, you may always bump into someone you feel is better than you. That’s exciting, not sad, because it’s a place you can grow.

Yeah, contrast the first two albums with their new “Higher Power” song, which is a dreadfully derivative children’s’ pop song. I really loath the direction they went in, it’s like the goal changes from writing beautiful timeless music to writing whatever is most likely to climb to the top of the charts.

Imagine being the other three: you joined a rock band, you got to play real instruments, your parts were engaging and fun. Then your front man starts writing EDM children’s songs that’ll for sure climb the charts, but don’t give you much of an opportunity to play what you like. “Ok”, you think, “this is a phase, it’ll be over soon, and in the meantime the songs are topping the charts. I can deal with this for a bit”.
But then a bit turns into a decade. You have grown to HATE your bands shitty pop produced commercial teenage girl music. You are in your mid 40’s, it’s embarrassing to play this shit. You just want to play some alternative ROCK again. You check your bank account, confirm that youre friggin set for life, and decide to leave. The magic is gone for you. It’s all so phony now, time to leave. Artistic differences.

As gifted with a musical talent as Collier is, Chris Martin's voice is something of otherworldly effect on me… it shows that in music there's a space for genius, but there's a very very big space for unique voices as well. Think of a Sinatra, a Nat King Cole, a Roy Orbison, a Karen Carpenter, a Whitney Houston.. and a Chris Martin.. each voice a rare pearl slowly shaped by the strange miracle of DNA and life. Then they sing, and that voice penetrates my soul and it transcends all of this very biology, deep into the fabric of this Universe. Maybe I'm dust, but this dust feels very grateful that it can experience feelings that are so much beyond its comprehension.

Lots to love and appreciate about this video. At least 9 of them in fact:
#1. Sparks is probably my favorite Coldplay song.
#2. The birds chirping as soon as they start playing.
#3. Advantage to Jacob for being the one playing the music. Chris has to deal with a delay and doesn't have the luxury of the music among him as he sings (I think it's way easier to sing when you are playing the music yourself).
#4. Chris braces himself for Jacob's verse even before he begins. Watch his body language, he knows he's about to witness something special.
#5. The little minor change at 2:15 that adds depth to the song. Chris pulls his hat down immediately after hearing it. Like him, I didn't see that coming but boy does it create some complexity.
#6. Jacob then builds a beautiful crescendo against those minor half steps he rolls over.
#7. The Amadeus reference is spot on.
#8. 2 very humble and grateful musicians.
#9. Jacobs jokes about Chris and his success.
    Thanks for posting.

I had to turn my screen to show my partner this. When it was done I said "wasn't that beautiful". Agree with both of their compliments to each other. The song *is* such a gemstone, and collier has such expertise with harmony and piano. It's really inspiring and heartwarming.

I was walking up the stairs after a real rough night today, things were tossing and turning in my head with no such clarity or purpose just a really bad space. This came on out a blue. I was really in a bad headspace and usually I don't let people know about my fears or saddens and most often times I don't let my self know about it either but as I was walking up the stairs to my home, I stopped. I was on the verge of breaking down when jacob's part comes in and as he played on I cried like a bitch to say the least but it was beautiful, it was like a whole building was lifted off of my shoulders. Thank you Jacob. I with all my heart love you man, I don't know if I'll be ever as great or even close to what you are but I'll keep on trying, I'll never give up. That's a promise. Thank you for showing me the light, thank you with all my heart where ever you are right now in the world. You are a Jemstone of a person and I hope that I get to meet you one day to tell you this in real life.
    Cheers!
    Akash :)

I can't even explain it. Its like this music level is so beyond my palate. One of my fav songs, and Chris' so so so good. Then you hear Jacob, and I'm not even sure if I like it better or hell...is it even good?! Its like my ears can't even make sense of it. I'm really genuinely not sure, yet I can't stop listening!
