Just as a heads-up, since I brought in guest editors to do the majority of this video, I didn't spend a ton of time on this, so progress on the Smash collab hasn't been affected at all. Give my three editors a big thank-you by checking them out in the description and maybe giving them a subscribe boyos and girlos

The part where they find Thanos and kill him is actually a great scene despite its slightly disappointing way of avenging the people who got snapped away by Thanos- but that's just it. It's unsatisfying. Even with the death of the main villain, the heroes still lost because the damage the villain caused still remains. It's a moment you'd think there'd be a huge fight, but no, the huge fight already happened, and untimely the villain won

And the line Thor says “I went for the head..”

@@crimz_ I was frustrated when people laughed at that or thought it was an ill timed joke. I am frustrated when people say Thor was thrown away as a fat joke and not epic.
So many people completely MISSED THE POINT.
God, I love Thor in Endgame so much. It's such a heartbreaking and ACCURATE portrayal of his grief, depression, guilt, and the weight of the personal responsibility he felt he had to stop Thanos.
You see him eating and drinking before they leave earth, an early indication of his grief consumption, you have the line of, "I went for the head" as a haunting mantra that he can't let go, you have him dropping his "funny fat guy routine" the moment he hears Bruce say Thanos' name, because he's not fat and funny, he is broken and traumatized.
To slowly see that damaged man speak to his mother, realize that it's ok to hurt and to fail, and to realize that for all his shortcomings, "[He's] still worthy." SO GOOD.
And then at the end he suits up with Mjolnir AND Stormbreaker looking like a freaking Viking? I'm sorry, TELL ME HOW THAT'S NOT EPIC?!
Also, can we appreciate that he didn't just get fit again at the end? He has started to heal emotionally, but his physical state shows there are still wounds, but that he has begun his path to restoration.
OK, I'll stop. I just love it so much.

So when I thought Finn would sacrifice himself and that they would let him die, it would get interesting. But he didn’t, instead they made the love interest stop him. And then they forgot her. Didn't even mention how Thor was set up on his hero's journey that would end with him defeating the villain. While Thanos was seemingly on his villain's mission, but it was ultimately HIS hero's journey. He was the main character. It was his story. And that's why him winning in the end was subversive. I went in thinking "okay, it's a two parter, Thanos will get like 3-4 stones and we'll see the Avengers take a final stand in part 2 to keep him from getting them all"
My fucking face when he had 4 like halfway through the movie. He really did it. Civil war is the reason why, because the avengers were torn apart, but I liked what you said about how they were unwilling to make the sacrifices as well. But I think that makes it more subversive because the ending of Civil War made it seem like "yea we fought but we'll be pals soon"
And then it really took until an hour or so into Endgame for them to be on a friendly level with each other again (Cap and Tony that is). Crazy stuff. Excellent story telling.

The hyper space ramming thing doesn't make sense in the star wars universe. Because hyperspace isn't just going really fast. It basically a worm hole to go to another side of the universe. And if it was so effective in killing things why didn't people fight like this before? It just makes no sense.

      @mychajlomiller3688 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

While yes, there's a lot of lore about having to avoid objects when going into hyperspace, like stars or you'd get burned up, and interdictor ships can use gravitational fields to pull ships out of hyperspace due to safety mechanisms built into them. Would it have worked? Arguable at best. But it's at least plausible, that plus ships ships shields are only shown to work on objects traveling slower than lightspeed in tfa.

*Wall Street* - Wall Street cares more about profits than sales. They also care about trends which indicate where the *brand* will go in the future. The brand is more than just movies and a lot more money is typically gained in those channels. (e.g. merchandise)
      Movie Sales
      -----------------
In this case - The Force Awakens had a $2B in worldwide box office Revenue w/ a movie cost of ~$260M (excludes marketing, etc., etc.) Gross Profit = $1.74B / ~760% return.
      The Last Jedi - $1.3B / ~$262M = $1.038B / ~400% return
While it still made money, there is a significant drop between the performance of the prior movie and this one. This is *NOT* something Wall Street would like.
Even worse is when you look at the numbers (so far) for Rise of Skywalker:
      $724M worldwide & production cost of $275M ...
While it is still in theaters and could possibly catch up with TLJ, this is *not* something that Wall Street would like....
One very interesting data point, is the domestic (US) box office.
      TFA - $936M
      TLJ - $620M
      TFA* -$361M
In fairness, the Original Trilogy also showed decline between the three movies, even though all are thought of as "good" movies; however, Wall Street wouldn't have approved of their performance either. (though the weakest original movie had a 14X profit)
      Other (Merch)
      -----------------------
While harder to quantify with exact numbers, the Disney Annual Report does have "nuggets" speaking to SW Merch:
      TFA - Strong sales
Rogue One - Less sales than TFA
TLJ - Significantly less than Rogue One
Again, not something Wall Street would be jumping up and down about.

If Marvel wrote The Last Jedi.....Snokes identity is revealed to be an outcast of the old Jedi order who’s been watching the story unfold from afar. After the fall of the empire the people were left lawless without leadership. As one of the last two force users, Snoke felt obligated to come out of exile and restore order. His justified fear was Luke restoring the Jedi order of old and history repeating itself…Snoke feels great power in young Kylo and thru the force he shows the flaws of the Jedi, how they were easily corrupted by the senate , overtaken by the empire, exiled for love. Young Kylo, feels neglected by Luke and appreciated by Snoke and joins him.
Luke has been on the island training in the ways of the force with the aid of old ghost jedi masters Yoda and Obi Wan. His force abilities are well beyond the powers expected of the jedi..But yet he feels he is outmatched by Snoke… He warmly embraces the lightsaber Rey gives him and tells her He’s Been waiting for her... He takes Rey as his apprentice for the final battle to come… Rey is fascinated by Luke, his incredible power but more from his wisdom.
Kylo and Rey connect using the force and spend time together by their own powers in secret. They feel their strongest when they are together and share a mysterious magnet like connection.
The two inevitably fall in love and the outcome of the pairing is a phenomenon the universe has never felt before. The combination of Dark and Light, Sith and Jedi, Hate and Love sends shockwaves through the galaxy. Snoke and Luke both feel chills from this great disturbance in the force….. To be Continued…

I was born in 2002. The originals will always be the best in my opinion, Return of The Jedi has always been my favourite since I was a small child. Prequels were needed to build up that story and honestly I don’t get why so many people hate them. Revenge of The Sixth has the best fight scene out of all of the Star Wars movies and it brilliantly portrays the divide between light and dark. But these new Star Wars movies are complete trash. I came out of Last Jedi and thought “well I’m never watching that again” - I don’t care what anyone says. I’m a big Star Wars fan but you would be lying if you said it was a perfect film. Rogue One is my favourite out of the new Star Wars movies as it fits perfectly between 3 and 4. Solo wasn’t bad. That’s my rant over, bye.

I think Endgame was fantastic as a story -- I mean what a way to end what was essentially the first 'phase' of the MCU, and the callbacks to previous movies were fantastic -- but as a movie, Infinity War was better. Endgame basically ignored a lot of character development (mostly Steve's) and there were some rather problematic aspects, like the pandering Girl Power scene or Thor's depression being used as a joke. Plus, plot holes. They seriously had no clue how their time travel worked. Endgame could have been a lot better than it was in terms of the way it dealt with its characters, but it was still really good. Both of them had incredible fight scenes though, I literally got chills.
So yea, this was basically a long-winded way of saying I pretty much agree with you. Sorry for the long paragraph, Marvel is probably my favourite franchise and I have a lot of feelings about it :P

I love that Infinity War is a movie about a noble knight fighting for his vsion of a perfect world.
Thanos is not only the hero in his own mind, he is the protagonist of this movie.
We could all guess the ending by going into the movie, yet still i was so surprised by it, and that the Russos just made this huge leap of faith in terms of "risky" storytelling (which i wish all the big companys would), that i said "Holy Shit... he did it. We lost." out loud to my cat, while crying my eyes out.
Even now, if i watch Infinity War and Endgame end-to-end, i cry like a baby.
From the satisfying depression IW creates to the just epic and heartfelt solution that EG offered. (And the aftermath in Homecoming)
From "We lost" to "We won...?", and i want to stress this little word "we". Aside from LotR and HP there are no franchises that ever made me feel like "we" did anything.
(Sorry, i like the original Star Wars trilogy, but that was an fantastic space opera and never really got me that enthralled)
This franchise had so much Humanity in it. Even if they are Superhuman and the villains only got good with Ego - Kurt Russel... what a performance. Comparing him in "Soldier" where he is adequate to his outstanding performance as Ego is impossible.
And Thanos, oh god. Thanos could easily have been a Frollo. But he is a Masterpiece of a villain.
Oh boi, what a ride it has been.
Sincerely i hope that marvel learned it lessons with Guardians and the amazing Ragnarok, letting a great directors explore their take on great storys.

The archetypal hero story is one in which the hero first fails, then goes through some transformation (usually through sacrifice of some sort, or dedication to training) and then is able to win. It tells us that through sacrifice and dedication we can become better versions of ourselves. You see this is just about every single story with a hero theme, be it modern films or ancient myths. Infinity War subverted this by having the antagonist go through this instead of the hero. It is subversion, whether you could predict it or not isn't relevant.

+Eric Adkins Sorry for jumping in on this discussion but I'm kind of curious what you would classify as "insane". I mean, do you mean full-blown psychosis or just anything that deviates from "normal human behaviour" down to things like compulsive lying? For example, forget murder for the moment. Crimes like rape or torture - in other words, crimes that are committed for no reason and serve no benefit to anyone except for the pain of the victim and brief power for the perpetrator - would you say people have to be insane to commit these sorts of crimes or do you think they see some benefit in it beyond just inflicting pain on someone else?
For my money, I've long held the belief that the "villain with explainable motives" IS the norm to the point where it's actually starting to become a shackle rather than a tool. Nowadays, it seems every villain has to seem sympathetic to a degree, every villain has to have a sad backstory or a backstory which shows he has reasons to "blame" the heroes, or deep-rooted family issues or something to "explain away the bad". I have nothing against complex villains at all, but I don't think the "people are never just evil" mindset is strictly true. Whether we like it or not, there are people out there who revel in causing pain for its own sake and the truth is you don't even have to look very far to find them. One of the examples I often give in these discussions is Iago in Othello who offers no less than five separate motivations to the audience for his actions, each more nonsensical than the last and straight-up refuses to provide a definitive answer when confronted at the end of the play. He is the definition of a "motiveless" villain and is often hailed as one of the greatest villains in western literature as well as one of the most interesting, in no small part because of the mystery of exactly why he did what he did. Villains with explicable (and occasionally understandable) motives have their place, yes, just as tragic villains, fallen heroes, and straight-up Freudian messes do, but above anything else the type of villain needs to work with the scope of the story being told. A personal conflict between hero and villain needs a personal connection, whereas I'd be perfectly fine not knowing exactly why someone wants to destroy 50% of all life in the universe because at that point, on that scale, it becomes unnecessary. One can easily come up with hundreds of motivations on one's own if they want to but it's not a question that desperately needs a solid answer.
Whoa, that got long. Sorry about that...

I would say that these people who enjoy causing harm for harm's sake are insane. Sadists are often irrational, and many suffer from psychosis or schizophrenia. I'm not saying excuse them. And I'm pretty sure they have rational reasons for doing what they do. They aren't bad in thier eyes. That's the only argument I'm making. That villains should never see themselves as the bad guy, and should have clear goals and motivations, to keep it realistic and relatable. That results in a better story 100% of the time. Iago was written by a master storyteller, and he could write lazily and still shit gold. If Iago had clear motivations and was relatable, I'm sure the story would be better. But he didn't have to for the Bard to make him a good character.
I see where you're coming from, but weather they see it as a "necessary evil, actually think they're helping someone, or are just insane, people never see themselves as the bad guy.

      Child-Gamorra: Did you do it?
      Thanos: Yes
      Child-Gamorra: Was it worth it?
Thanos: (Thanos is unable to look her in the eyes as sadness furrows his brow)
(Sunset scene: Thanos has to collect himself emotionally, for a moment, before smiling in his contentment.)
I also think they should have had another flashback scene of Gamorra interacting with Thanos as a child and actually having a real father daughter moment. A moment where she actually called him 'dad' for once. This coupled with the scene where he throws her off: If as she was falling she screamed the name "Dad" then showing how much it wounds Thanos in that moment to be really reminded that she was truly his daughter, even in her mind.

When Thanos snapped, another collective gasp. We all knew it was coming, but it still caught us by surprise. A great movie resonates with its audience. When I saw The Last Jedi, the only scene that made any impact was the lightspeed scene and it only caused everyone to be silent. Not much of a reaction.
