  • Are the Last Jedi defenders crazy? Let’s take a look at what some of the Star Wars fans have to say. How stupid can the defence of Last Jedi get? Can Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson be defended? Has Star Wars finally lost its magic?

To Stratowind = Yes, training in the Force is more metaphysical than physical. Robot Head was just highlighting how Rey zero-to-hero progress goes against the decades of lore that was established by the franchise. Maybe it is true that "darkness rises and light to meet it," but it was like Rey won a the space magic Powerball lottery without even purchasing a ticket.
That blind guy in Rouge One needed years of training. Yoda studied and instructed the Force for centuries, and he still needed extra training by Qui-Gon Jinn. There's around three years between Episodes 5 and 6, in which Luke spent time privately training, so he could help save Han Solo and go toe-to-toe with Darth Vader. Typing of Vader, Anakin Skywalker, the immaculately conceived, off-the-scale midi-cholorean percentage, Chosen One of the Force, needed years of training in order to become a person that even Emperor Palpatine feared.
Therefore, it becomes an incredible hard pill to swallow that Rey was able to do all that she could within the span of at best 96 hours? Yoda was a Master Jedi for hundreds of years, but he needed his full concentration to life Luke's X-wing out of the swamp. Rey lifted dozens of boulders on her first try, and she din't even have a frown on her face.
And even if Rey basically "downloaded" Ben Solo's training during the mind probing, that still means that Ben Solo had years of training by Luke Skywaker (and presumably Snoke) to become badass enough to conduct a casual conversation while suspending blaster fire in mid-air.
As I've often said about Episode 7...
The Force doesn't just awaken in Rey. It got up, showered, shaved, put on its clothes, at breakfast, drove out of the garage, and is on its way to the office. LOL

    "You don't like strong women."
It's not the characters, it's how they're written. Look at Ahsoka. In the Clone Wars movie, she was just a cliche cartoon character. A lot of fans hated her. Then, over the course of the series, she became a legitimately strong character with her own moral compass and even developed her own views on the Jedi Order in general. Hell, she became one of the most important factors in Anakin's fall. Then came Rebels, where she became one of the most important people in building the Rebel Alliance. She went from being seen as a completely pointless (and kind of annoying) character to being a fan favorite because of good writing and storytelling.

I would have preferred Hammill refused to do the movies, that it was such a bad joke what they were doing to his character that they could either find someone else or write him out (and explain to fans his decision)... The reunion of the original three, which was a main selling point of these movies, was so putridly handled that it would be fair to describe it as false advertising and ripping off the fans... Hammill should have said shove it or rewrite it...

George made the idea for the show and had a lot of influence on it in Season 1 and it did okay, but not good enough. So Dave Filoni helped George out with the show even more and the other Seasons did really well. After the Disney buyout, Disney cancelled The Clone Wars in favour of Rebels. This pissed a lot of people off in TCW community. And before you say that they're bringing it back, they're only bringing it back because of the failures that TLJ and Solo were (note: Solo was not a failure because I know people in the community who thought it was okay, however it was a financial failure in the eyes of Disney). I know I'm a year late, but I want to add on: People love to jerk off Thrawn, but the real core (and best, although that's subjective) plot of the EU was Jaina vs. Jacen/Caedus, at least until the dust of the Yuuzon Vong war cleared. For anyone unfamiliar, Jania and Jacen were Han and Leia's twins - specifically, Jania was their daughter. Not only was she beloved by fans, she was an objectively well-written character. AND her enemy being Jacen - who was her brother - added a unique, emotional layer that the Rey v. Kylo "enemies to lovers rehash # 9 million" could simply never possess.
Apparently, Star Wars fans hate female characters so much that a lot of us are cross they replaced a female character with a worse-written female character.

You realize that Kylo is actually wrong in saying that right? You don't let the past die; you reflect on it, improve on it, and cherish the good moments without dwelling too much on it. Sure, you might argue that Yoda's burning of the Jedi Tree is a sign that he also believe this, but remember that the Ancient Jedi Texts were still intact (somehow) on the Falcon. I felt like Yoda was testing Luke, testing him and his beliefs, whether he actually wanted to burn the tree.
This aside, I highly doubt that Rey is a nobody. It should be clear that she was serarching for answers in a clearly dark side-infested sinkhole, as well as her conversations with Kylo. I feel like the dark side is attempting to influence her, and because the dark side has been known to be more powerful in combat than the light side (the light side has been taught to use their powers to defend, not attack) and has possessed more abilities (force lightning), this would explain why Rey is so powerful, but she doesn't have a clue what the Force really is. I saw the documentary "The Director & The Jedi" about the making of THE LAST JEDI, it clearly demonstrates that Rian was WAAAY over his head and had no idea what he was doing.
They spent an enormous amount of money and time to create scenes that had no meaning, purpose or reason for being in the movie. The millions they spent on making creatures that were never used, the props that were never used, the costumes for literally hundreds of actors and extras in the casino scenes that had no relevance, the locations that could have been done on a sound stage instead of exotic locations that didn't exactly amaze anybody, the fish cow that gave green milk was used only for one shot, and on and on and on.... Doomed from the start.

      3. Luke throwing away his light sabre and exclaiming "I'm a Jedi like my father before me" was incredibly retarded. But you know he risked the whole war on the fact that he sensed the good in him.

@@nykerianash1590 What exactly was Hans rescue plan in return? I'm going walk through the chain of events. Tell me how much sense it makes.
Step 1: Have Lando infiltrate and gather intelligence to report back.
Step 2: Send droids with my terms and smuggled light sabre.
Step 3: Princess Leia gives them yet another prisoner to infiltrate and fail her rescue attempt. Thus giving them 3 more prisoners in play.
Step 4: Luke goes in unarmed and gives Jabba his terms face to face partly hoping to mind trick him. He very nearly dies and lucks out on them not straight up shooting him after the Reigncore dies.
Step 5: All are in prisoned and Luke saves the day, lucking out on the fact that none of the extra bodies were harmed.
From any military stand point what lick of sense did any of that make?
Now I'm not going to defend the new movies because they suck. However I'm sick of people turning a blind eye to how much Return of The Jedi sucked and acting like the whole original series was a magnum opus.

Even Revenge Of The Sith (it's supposed to be the "good" Prequel) is boring and cringy at times but just not nearly as much as The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones are. @TosoToco 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@Imlaor25 I know you asked I_love_Carrots but since he didn’t answer I’ll try to explain a few things that makes TLJ good (sorry if my English is bad).
First of all the cinematography in TLJ is probably the best of any SW movie so far and even if you say that things like the hyperspace ram doesn’t make sense it still looks cool and it does not ruin the movie. Second the thing about Rey being a marry sue doesn’t make sense either, if I’ve understood the term marry sue correctly its a character who lacks flaws or weaknesses, I personally like the fact that the force can grow strong within anyone even if that makes them very powerful and in this case it doesn’t make her unrealistically powerful. If it would be that case then she should have been able to kill snoke by herself, which she couldn’t. Also just the fact that she and her parents were nobody’s automatically gives her a flaw. If she was a marry sue then why would she need to get training from Luke and when she gets training she can’t use the force on command which is a flaw. She and her friends fails to save the resistance which serves the movie’s theme of failure, it’s only when Luke shows up that nobody else dies, does that mean he’s a marry sue? NO of course not! Because it serves the plot in a natural way, his return as a force hologram is built up after he realized his flaws and mistakes and took care of it. But back to Rey again, I can understand that people gets frustrated over the fact that Rey becomes a skilled Jedi without the movie showing us the training she did, the reason they didn’t show that training was because it wasn’t needed, we had already seen that she was good at fighting with a staff which is similar to a lightsaber, we also se her doing some training which isn’t really the sort of training you’d expect but it’s still training (she could also have trained of screen but that’s not really a good answer).
It almost feels like I have to explain why the movie isn’t as bad as everyone say it is before I can even explain why it’s pretty good in my opinion. You shouldn’t have to explain why a movie isn’t bad before you give it a compliment.
Anyways I do acknowledge that the movie has flaws like the cantobike scene or the humor but that doesn’t ruin the movie.
It’s getting pretty late where I live so I’ll end my argument here but I’ll try to give more examples If you response and want to discuss anything about TLJ.
Again sorry if I misspelled anything or made my arguments messy, English is my second language.
I’d be happy to hear your opinion.
May the force be with you always :)

Counterpoint: the empire and later the first order could’ve put heavy restrictions on space travel that the rebellion and republic could’ve had a difficult time dealing with.
Counter-counterpoint: the first order was only in control of half of the galaxy, encouraging smuggling and the progress of technology would’ve made ships far less expensive as a whole. (This assumes the “rebellion” was fairly laissez faire, which given the producers of the new films seems iffy at best. At the least however, technology would have progressed far beyond what was seen in the other movies)
Counter-counter-counterpoint: given the destruction in the wake of the “hyperspace bomb” that presumably would’ve spanned for millions if not billions of miles, this might be a “war crime,” disincentivizing it by risk of court-martialing. "If you don't like it, don't watch it." You know, that's actually a fair point; and it's why I haven't watched a single Disney Star Wars property (either film or television) since The Last Jedi was released. Nothing is sadder than someone who professes to hate what Disney has turned Star Wars into but still consumes every bit of Disney Star Wars media that gets released.
Disney doesn't care what you think as long as you're watching. The opposite of love isn't hate. It's apathy. Disney has made me very apathetic towards Star Wars.

So Rian Johnson said that Empire Strikes Back isnt good because Luke got stomped on by Vader? THATS THE POINT. Luke was an amateur, he had the lightsaber, trained here and there since Obi-Wan gave it to him, then trained under the former Jedi Grand Master, got cocky, ran off to fight Vader feeling invincible with newfound power and strength. But failed, he realized how outclassed he was and for the next year trained and became stronger and wiser. ESB Luke and ROTJ Luke are two different states of mind. Luke grows up throughout the OT movies. ESB is the turnaround. I cant believe that we have someone who is making Star Wars movies, that really doesnt care about the movies as a whole. George Lucas shouldnt have sold the franchise to Disney. Disney has made to much money out of pure greed, and not love of the series. Since George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, and Disney gave the license to EA. All we have seen is mediocre products by both. The few good things that have come out of this whole ordeal is The Clone Wars resurgence, Rebels, Rogue One, and the pure love of Star Wars from true fans of the series.

This new story destroyed all the characters that we loved from both the movies and the literature that the real star wars fans like myself have learned to love. These are characters that have been built up for 40 years.
And now suddenly Han Solo is this incompetent idiot who loses his own ship and his wife, Chewie is suddenly this puppet who just blindly follows this random girl he met a day ago, Luke is suddenly some coward who runs away from his responsibilities because reasons, the first order is for some stupid reason the single most powerful institution in the galaxy just because they destroyed the capital world of the alliance, .... The writing is so bad that they don't even understand that the Rebel alliance aren't actually rebels. They were the damn rulers of the galaxy. You're not a rebel if you are part of the government that rules the damn galaxy. In the new trilogy, the First Order are actually the rebels.
Sorry, I'm just pissed because Disney destroyed my favourite sci fi fantasy. A thousand comics, hundreds of novels, all the games, ... ruined by a single movie that reads like a piss-poor fanfic written by an anime fangirl.
Seriously, were the writers of that shit even aware of the Expanded Universe? Did they actually know about characters like Revan, Bastilla, The Exile, Nomi Sunrider, Exar Kun, Naga Sadow, Darth Bane, Skere Kaan, the Solo Twins, Kyle Katarn, Darth Lumiya, Cade Skywalker, Vestara Khai, Mara Jade, ....
Notice the amount of women I listed right here. If they wanted a strong female lead, they could've picked any one of them and copied their story. That movie would've been fucking amazing. TLJ was so bad even a cheap copy of the EU would've been a thousandfold better.

_Han Solo is the same guy who once stepped on a twig and got backhanded by the guy he was trying to jump. His character is one who constantly goes from one frying pan to another._
That's a far cry from being a deadbeat husband and father than continues to lose his own ship. Why is it that the comics and novels managed to capture a far more believable Han Solo than Disney could?
_Chewie follows literally anyone, presumably to avoid all that random wackiness at home._
No he does not. If he did, why didn't he just give in to Jabba and work as a bounty hunter for him? Or why didn't he leave Han when he got betrayed on Bespin? That's because Chewie is loyal. And loyalty doesn't shift in one damn second. It took Chewie an entire movie to trust Luke, yet Rey just magically connects with him?
_Luke is on the verge of a profound realization that the Jedi and the Sith both have to end._
Nothing of what you just said it true. That never happened in the original trilogy. Luke Skywalker is the guy that never gave up, not even the Jedi.
_I particularly like the fact that the Force continues to create progressively more powerful people as the generations go on._
Yeah, with zero explanation. Because you this is sth you have to assume. The writing is so bad you have to assume that's how the Force works. Good job.

Assuming if that's what Disney was tring to pull off with the story, it's still shit. If this is your explanation as to why Rey is this random girl that never fails and is unexplicably powerful, then that is still shit. to be fair, the EU was quite the clusterf*** itself. The prequels REALLY screwed with the information established in other works, like the Han Solo trilogy and the Thrawn trilogy. The difference between Disney Star Wars and the EU is that the EU was a clusterf*** of brilliant stories with a couple bad or wacky ones here and there, the Disney canon is a well-maintained timeline of mostly bad stories with some good here and there.

One of the worst defenses that I've heard goes like this - "We needed the Last Jedi because without it, we could not have taken the franchise in a new direction separate from the Skywalkers." This is such a ridiculous statement on so many levels. There were a million other ways they could have taken the franchise in a new direction. They could have simply made a trilogy, starting with Ep 7, that is completely removed from the old characters and locations. But instead, they brought Luke, Han and Leia out of retirement and bastardized them in order to prop up their terrible new heroes.
No, we didn't f*cking NEED the Last Jedi in order to move in a new direction. They could have just, you know, DONE THAT FROM THE BEGINNING!

The worst thing about TLJ was that Leia flying through space scene. When she got blown out into space, I was a struck by a similar feeling to when Han was killed. I knew she had to die though, Carrie Fisher had died- they needed to work her out of the series some how. That scene was the perfect opportunity to do a few reshoots to replace scenes during the remainder of the movie. Maybe have one of the other characters see that the Rebellion is without a leader and step up to fill her place. Do they do that? No. Instead, their heads were stuck so far up their own asses that their film couldn't adapt and change to the death of one of the leading actors. They have the most garbage, eye-rolling scene I have ever seen in Star Wars. A friend and I literally looked at each other during the movie with the expression of "what the fuck. really?" When your audience has to stop watching your movie to acknowledge how shit something in your movie is- that's not good.

Worse yet... the reason Leia survived is because women are 100 times more important than men.
      The Force is Female now.
From start to finish this is shown over and over again, starting with the opening shot where we have Leia's real life daughter in charge of all the men on the ground. The man towers over her, but she is the one shouting so she must be in charge. She has to remind him lives are more important than ammo.
Next up is Blue Squadron Leader, a 20 something Millennial Falcon kinda girl in charge of old crusty bearded pilots that must have been around during the golden years.
After that we are treated to the bomber chick. "It's all down to you!" Poe says, the man who created a mess and had to be cleaned up by a woman. Oh and she uses the Force in which Leia herself senses.
Poe is trying to sacrifice himself every chance he gets, but only women are important enough to achieve this. Watch as that chica dies in the explosion, watch Poe's face in slow motion. "I wish I could do that!". Seriously, the bomber girl even had 3 men shouting in slow motion as she overcomes male pressure and achieves the mission.
So in the first 10 minutes of the film....
      1. Women are in charge of the entire Rebel Resistance as revealed in the shitty opening credits,
      2. They are in charge of the boots on the ground as well with the opening shot.
      3. Are in charge in space with Blue Squadron Leader. "Bombs away!"(bitch why you happy, all your friends died, probably shouldn't have ordered a tight formation with a bunch of explosive bombers filled with bombs.)
      4. A woman achieves the mission started by a man who was disobeying orders from a woman.
Then it only gets worse as these things are hammered home.
Like the woman teaching the man that lives are more important than ammo, Rose Tico has to teach Finn lessons of morality at Canto Bite my ass scene.
Remember what I just said about Poe trying to off himself in a blaze of glory in the 1st and 2nd film?
Well Finn tries this too, only to be stopped by Rose who heroically sacrifices herself.... in the name of love.
What??? The look on Finn's face. "Bitch you trippin, we just friends." But he couldn't say it on the account of her dying in his arms so he just had to play along.
Do I even need to mention Holdo?
First, poor Admiral Akbar for being passed up by Princess Leia to be the Supreme Grand Poobah Commander, and being unceremoniously killed off without so much a mention. But who the fuck does Kathleen Kennedy think she is that she can just thrust herself into Star Wars lore? This is a BS made up character that is a fictional representation of KK. To deny this is to feed the Dark Side.
Why is the new Star Wars trilogy "not our movies", but they are for Kathleen?
She is getting everything she wants, even going so far as to insert herself into them, like we wouldn't notice.
Oh, and again, not only is she in charge.... she also sacrifices herself in a heroic way to save the Resistance.
I wish I could write the 3rd one. I would bring Holdo back to life just to kill her again for some completely mundane and insignificant reason. They clone her and before she even gets a chance to do anything significant, she dies in the middle of a speech.
I could make a career out of bashing these new Star Wars films for the rest of my life, that is how bad they are and how endless the material is.

I don't think writing someone out of a movie because they died is something you should do, it's just f' d up. They should have had Kylo blow the ship up, like you can personally kill your father but blowing up a ship your mom happens to be on is a no go. But yeah what did happen was bs, if Leia, never trained in the force, while dead in the vacuum of space can fly back to a ship that has a giant hole in it, then Mace Windu a jedi master should have shown up with no hands to help Obi wan take down Anikin in the 3rd movie with new robot hands and then most of these movies never happened

Riann Johnson is noted for qualifying to direct TLJ based on: 1. Directing Looper. 2. Directing a single breaking bad episode. Looper was a solid film, and this leads me to believe he was only marginally involved. The breaking bad episode he directed was "The Fly", one of the most unpopular episodes that bored viewers to death as the protagonist spent 45 minutes trying to kill a fly in his underground laboratory. RJ bravely "shatters expectations" by insulting and trolling his audience. Good job Disney. I will always stear clear of his work in the future.

Rian Johnson is an excellent and unique director. I mean he clearly has his own experimental style borrowed from the indies and old classics not seen in Hollywood that much and I'm glad he got to put those visuals to work in the Star Wars universe. Looper and The Fly is works that demonstrates what sort of films he's striving to make. Both were slow burners which Breaking Bad always has been about. If you think the episode was jsut about killing a fly, then you've missed the enitre plot. Now that being said, Rian is an excellent director. What I won't defend though is his writing which as seen in this movies still has some problems. It is important to distinguish between those two terms and know the difference from what a director and a writer does.

    • @davidh.4944

But giving complete creative control over a big name, big budget, well-established space opera franchise to such a person, especially one with only a half dozen previous low-to-mid budget projects under his belt, was a _huge_ mistake.

You can be a fan of a series as a whole while not liking the bad films in it. Fanboys think calling themselves true fans make being a fanboy sound like a good thing. It's not.

No. People who don't like the new films are Star Wars fans. They don't have to like the sequel trilogy to be Star Wars fans. I like the original trilogy, certain elements of the prequels, the Clone Wars show, the EU, Rebels and Rogue One. Therefore I'm a fan. By your logic anyone who doesn't like the shitty Star Wars Holiday Special which even George Lucas himself hates isn't a Star Wars fan.

One of the funniest things imo about the Sequels is Snoke. They eluded to him in the First Sequel, putting out bread crumbs of "Oh boy, this guy might be the paramount threat of the Sequel Trilogy, I wonder how he's going to get developed as a Villain." Then he just dies with no menace built up or anything in the Second Sequel. But oh, lets bring back Darth Sidious, despite the fact he died at the end of the original trilogy. You know, instead of using the Villain we already built up in the First and Second Sequel.

Erick Robles The funny thing is that Rogue One wasn’t that great in terms of characters. It’s most interesting and deep character was an ex imperial droid for gods sake.
What made it a great Star Wars film was that it was true to the universe. It had the feel, the excitement, and it really was an ode to star wars and its fandom, even if it didn’t have the best characters.
The people who made rogue one love Star Wars, that much is obvious. The last Jedi and Solo however?? Not even close.
