The motivations of Doc Ock and the Goblin aren't as flat as you think. They represent thematic opposites to Peter's development. SP1 is about 2 people using their newfound power for completely different reasons. Peter to help those in need, and Norman to get revenge. The Goblin is like a pure villanous force who believes that great power should be used to get what you want. He successfully convinces Norman about this, and unsuccessfully convinces Peter, who's conviction to his uncle's words remains strong.
Octavius wanting to rebuild the sun machine doesn't seem to make a lot of sense on its face, but makes more sense when you realize that the AI in the arms have the sole purpose of successfully completing the experiment, and that they're in control of him for most of the movie. Before the accident, Otto tells Peter that intelligence is a gift to be used "for the good of mankind", which is sort of a rewording of "with great power". This moral is pushed to the wayside when the arms take control, and Peter, unable to handle the effect being spider man has on his personal life, starts to reject it too. He comes back around just in time to save the day, and Ock does too, but only when it's too late, so he has to sacrifice himself. These villains are better written than what you give them credit for.
Yeah this is highlight in far from home where Norman directly tells peter(Tom) that he may have power but he’s to weak to use it to get what he wants.
This is such a beautiful explanation
I didnt watch the vids
But i always thought the motivations werent strong enough
U changed my perspective
Don't forget that Octavius was griefing about his dead wife, making him more emotionally vulnerable to the arms controling him.
DocOck
Preach it!!
Actually, Harry's amnesia was taken straight from the comics where the real Green Goblin aka Norman Osborn was the one who actually got amnesia. He regained his memory after watching a record of Spiderman fighting Green Goblin.
Fair but you can't tease hob goblin for two movies then make him lose memory. Then he gains his memory back just like that
@@anedsalhi9542 Agree. Its supposed to be a whole different arc, or whole different movie actually. They shouldve just let Harry go all Goblin the entire movie
Harry also got amnesia after his first go as the Goblin. He's basically a normal guy for the next decade or two until his final Goblin round.
And after even Harry Gets amnesia
What people tend to forget when saying 'that 3 minute dance scene was cringy' is that rami was TRYING for it to be cringy. he WANTED it to be awkward. by saying that, youre saying that the scene did its job.
When I was a kid I was soooo socially awkard that I thought he was really cool.

In the comics, Harry was more menacing and psychotic than Norman could ever be. He really strikes Peter at his heart, playing with his emotions while simultaneously torturing Peter both physically and mentally
No not really, not at all. He's kind of a straight up tragic villain stuck between needing to be like his dad and not actually wanting to be like his dad, and so blames Spider-man for framing Norman and murdering him and Gwen.
Like he's more subtle, in that he fucks with Peter by sending him ominous empty boxes and just flying around him cheerfully knowing Peter can't attack him out of his suit, but like Norman kills people a lot.
Ok yes, there was the LMD parents plan which was kind of fucked up and honestly ruined the subtlety thing going on, but that's still tame compared to Norman doing the Clone Saga and killing Peter and MJ's baby.
@@gota7738they sometimes do that or the thing he was talking about you’re talking about 2 different versions of Harry
@@crustycrumpetkaiser6734Adaptations change him a lot but 616 is one continuity. When he has his tenure as the Goblin he does get psychological, though still played as a tragic villain since he's having his own breakdown there. However on Norman's return he does a lot lot lot worse and is a lot more sadistic.
There are probably a couple of AU comics with a less sympathetic Harry but not major series.
Ok fine there was the Kindred thing but that same story had him do it under the influence of Mephisto after Norman sold his soul so that can join Sins Past in one big "didn't happen" bin as far as I'm concerned.

Spider-Man 3 wasn't supposed to have Venom in it, and consequently Sandman. It was the studio who forced Sam Raimi to put Venom in the movie, and he had to adjust his script, which initially had Harry as the only villain. It is honestly impressive that the movie did not turn out far worse and still had good moments and a good arc for Peter's character
Actually it was originally Sandman and Harry
thats Ironic because I feel harry was barely even a villian in the movie
No Raimi actually chose Sandman as the main antagonist of this movie. As for Harry, he said that he would not follow his father's footsteps but be instead "somewhere between".
Spider-man 3 was actually a much more focused film than most films now. There's a proper focus on Peter's character arc and the theme of the movie is clear as day- Revenge.
I thought the theme was forgiveness

The butler telling Harry that his father was killed by the glider makes sense because Norman’s last words were “Peter, don’t tell Harry.” So it makes sense people close to Harry kept this a secrete until it was absolutely necessary for him to understand what really happened.
But like. How would the Butler know that that’s what Norman said? Did Peter tell him? Were there cameras installed or something?? I like this idea conceptually, but it falls apart if you think about the implications.
@@helenaperez4343 The butler saw Norman's wounds and understood what happened. A butler is not an idiot after all.

I dont know how the Symbiote works in the comics but it felt like it grew stronger from hatred in this movie. Which is why it influenced Peter, but didnt turn him into a full on murder machine like with Eddie who was just pure hatred by that point. Unfortunately the movie had to be PG13 so Raime couldn't give him the crazy violent scenes he so desperately needed.
Despite what critics and some people say, I love Spider Man 3, but Spider Man 2 was the best. Doc Ock was an awesome villain. Willem Dafoe was absolutely brilliant as well. J.K. Simmons was definitely the best thing to come out of the Raimi trilogy.

I feel like the problems you mentioned about harry and sandman where due to the executive interference of Sony/trying to force venom into it last minute which lead to a lot of their stories either being cut or forced to rework it. If raimi was allowed to make it his way I think their stories would have been handled better. Also, what you mentioned on the reworking of uncle bens death, I think it’s part of sandman’s character “I’m not a bad man I just have bad luck” . He’s a decent man that just has horrible luck or always ends up making a wrong decision so the idea of him messing things up and ending up killing a man works for me. Also he is no where as bad as the diamonds, he regretted the things he did & wished he could take them back while they went from not caring to boom, good guys
Sam remi wasn't written into a corner by himself, he was written into a corner by the Studio. Sony wanted Venom, but Remi wanted to hold that off for another movie and focus on Harry and sandman (or the vulture), but Sony said "no you're putting Venom in now and maybe we'll talk about a 4th".
This was before the MCU so anything beyond a trilogy was considered risky, and yet Sony wanted that easily marketable Venom merch in Stores. Remi hated this and resented Venom being in the movie to at least some degree. this is what the movie is cobbled together because it's 2 movies worth of plot in one.
Still a good movie. Where this bandwagon hate train come from?
Young Dab-A-Roosa I don’t think people are upset that it’s a bad movie. I think that they’re upset that it’s an okay movie. I adore it, but following up Spider-Man 2 which, barring Into the Spiderverse, is considered the best Spider-Man movie, it kind of falls flat.
@@thecraigadile1494 i think that spiderman 2 is highly overrated and is not that good, the mcu one is also great but not the one people were hoping for although spiderman far from home is better and is at no 2 on my list after spiderverse
uday singh I always find it hard to judge. Every S-M movie can change on my list depending on my mood, barring Spiderverse which is no.1, though I haven’t seen Far From Home yet.

I am a huge Tobey McGuire Spiderman fan
Since I was younger I remember , I was so hyped for SpiderMan 3 in cinema
I watched it directly when it came out.
Seriously I was a huge Spider-Man fan back then and still I am.
The third movie was actually and surprisingly my favorite one , even tho it has some issues and missed opportunity’s.
Venom was my favorite part actually.
Even only because of the fact that he was pure evil and disturbing in this movie.
The suit , the atmosphere was perfect
But I understand that people didn’t like him
Because he was „too skinny“ or Topher grace was not good , but actually he was good.
His Eddie character was a evil version of Peter
Wich is exactly like the comics
The only thing that disappointed me was venom didn’t had much screen time and the character building wasn’t that great.
The villains build up was a disappointment too
They should have spilt this movie in two parts just like the original plan was , the church scene were Eddie becomes venom should be the end and the in Spider-Man 4 they could have every villain character a good storyline and character build.
My favorite scene of the movie was definitely the church scene where Peter try’s to take out the symbiot and Eddie became Venom. That scene was a masterpiece. It had a dark atmosphere
And was perfect.
It's Sam Raimi.
The humour was intentional.
I don’t think Harry’s death is supposed to be serious but it’s fucking hilarious.
Kim Jong Un These people clearly don’t know enough about Raimi if they think these movies are trying to be serious 24/7
Saber Is A Wulf I don’t think anyone believes that, but it’s obvious there’s funny stuff that is supposed to be serious in this movie
ImBeans I guess
I thought you were Kim Jong Un
you tell Venom that he'll never eat lunch in this town again!!!
He already ate the Asian guy at the end of the movie. And Venom still can't get his chocolate bar afterwards.
But his Spider sense is tingling
Venom needs moar chocolate
@@mix3k818 No, he needs more screen time.
19:55 No it actually makes sense if you view it from this perspective
The butler knew Harry would help Peter so he told Harry the truth, so there was a high chance of Harry's death, leaving no one to claim Harry's inheritance except for the butler himself as Harry doesn't have any close relatives.
25:47 Funny thing is that Sam Raimi actually wanted Venom's birth to be the ending of the movie and have it as a cliffhanger for Spider-Man 4, but Sony and Topher Grace didn't like the idea
Thank you for crediting the Sandman birth scene
That shit is beautiful, it genuinely stirs the feels
I agree. That's the one thing I really liked about this movie. It was the crown jewel of this beautiful disasterfuck

That would be SO funny!

Jameson: Parker!? You're Spiderman!?😦
He’s the damsel in distress we need not deserve.
"Kirsten Dunst agreed to do the third film with the condition that Mary Jane did not serve as a damsel in distress in the third act. This was agreed upon by executives and Sam Raimi; originally the climax involved Eddie Brock kidnapping Gwen Stacy and holding her hostage, as he was sure that Peter was in love with Gwen. Mary Jane still played a big part in the climax with her most notable cut scene: Mary Jane went to Harry and made a passionate speech about forgiveness, prompting him to go and help Peter. This scene was filmed, and some of the dialogue can be heard in the trailers (”We’ve all done terrible things to each other, but we have to forgive each other. Or everything we ever were will mean nothing.”

I just rewatched this movie last night and in all honesty, I'm fully aware this movie is horrible and most of the characters make the dumbest decisions and aren't good people. I mean, Harry is kinda creepy throughout the movie but I can't help but absolutely love this movie and I feel like emo Peter is the main reason I adore this movie so much! I was snort laughing so hard throughout the movie. Tobey Maguire has the best reactions ever! I love his facial expressions so much! This movie is a mess but it's a loveable and extremely entertaining mess that I'll always welcome a rewatch with open arms 😌

13:00 this is absolutely right. This is what a dork thinks cool dudes act like, and it's beautiful.
me
Way too relatable for me :(
The thing is, and mind you this is just my opinion, the symbiote shouldn't make you want to be cool. It should feed on and increase your darker feelings. Now, if Peter strutting in the street and being real cocky with women was a way of overcompensating because Mary Jane left him, that'd be better, since most of the other scenes of that montage could be seen as him giving into the symbiote's sway, but... Him being all goofy and giggly doesn't get that across and is really dumb, which culminates into the god awful dance on Mary Jane's workplace and adds to the mood whiplash when he confronts her and the church scene afterwards.
I fucking love that scene so much I don't understand why people hate it it's SO FUNNY
@@Jetsiuc you could say that him turning so cocky was the extent of his darker feelings. I know that needs can end up holding grudges against people but I don't think Peter would be that kind of person both cuz of him being a superhero and since he's following uncle Ben's advice.

Did you know that Sony forced Rami to add more villains, he wanted this movie to be the best but Sony was like “Either put more villains or give us the movie to reboot.” Rami was so fed up he basically felt just finished with the movie.
That doesn't fix the final work.
For example in FFH there was supposed to be a scene where Peter had to sell all his Star Wars merchandise to go on the trip to Europe.
Does this scene existing changes how Peter doesn't has too much financial problems like in the comics in the final work? No, because it isn't in the final work.
Something that happened or was supposed to happen can explain something, but what remains of it is what matters.

@@OG.Trippster I said Gandalf on purpose to joke around. It was intentional
The "dumb-ness" of the trilogy was always intentional. Raimi was a big comic book fan and wanted to recapture the sillynes of the early ones. That's one of the many things great about the original trilogy (yes, even 3. Easily the weakest but still not bad). PS: Spider Man 3 > Any of the Amazing Spider-Man movies.
Dislike for saying Amazing SpiderMan is bad. :(

They're awful movies with bad written plot points and 1 dimensional characters. And let's not get started on how that's easily the worst Spidey. Bully Spidey is worst Spidey and he let people get killed by a truck just to crack some jokes. Priorities were not straightened out with that guy.
