I’d recommend making smaller fields, several plots to fill the same space. The families and/or ox need to finish work in any given field by seasons end, or it is wasted for the year. Small fields help them knock it out in time and the waste is minimized if you don’t have as many farmers as you thought you needed. Which is a Lot.

Every time I make it past the first year and get to early combat, I find my cities become a jumbled mess and I have to give up and restart with better city planning in mind. The game really needs some kind of easy overlay to see what each house is doing and draw clear property lines between them.
I think that’s how the game is meant to be played. Unlike total war, this game is a full city builder and a full medieval warfare RTS. It might take a while to get the city building component down. I’m in your position too I have t been able to make it to building armies.
