I was adjusting a plugin limiter (and saturator) earlier today and for whatever reason, in experimenting with different oversampling options realized the highest isn't always best to my ears. I actually turned it off altogether on the latter in processing a kick drum. I've learned a bit about aliasing and all that so can't truly explain my rationale. Hearing things in context, that is, in the mix is really important.
Often I can’t hear the difference in context either. Or even in solo. We probably get more hung up than we should on certain technical specs than we need to. Thanks for watching and commenting Andrew.

@InTheMixJoeCarrell - Great video Joe!!! I love how you demonstrated the drum processing you use. The drums really sound good. Everyone knows that a great drum sound starts from recording great sounding drums with great mics and great mic preamps. You really didn't say anything in the video about how the drums were recorded and I'd really like to know, assuming you remember, what you did when recording these drums? Did you EQ or compress on the way in? I'm a drummer for many more years than I want to admit and want to get the best recorded sound I can!!! I'm guessing that recording process could be a whole video itself. Thanks for what you do for PLAP and looking forward to future videos!!! Bless you Joe and hope you had a great B-Day!!! 😎🎶
Thank you Tom!! It was quite a few years ago but likely some eq on the kick and toms. Also probably a little top on the snare. Lite compression on the snare top and bottom, kick, and heavier on the rooms. That was likely all.
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell Thanks Joe, that helps. I know from watching other videos of engineers and they tend to do some EQ and compression on the way in which is something I haven't been doing. Great Video Thank You So Much.I would love to Hear Joe's thoughts on Paul Thirds opinion regarding the Kit Plugins.... Paul was not too kind to say the least. Sounded great to me with what Joe was doing with the BB73
I’m unfamiliar with the video you mention, but I’ve definitely been enjoying what I can only describe as a realistic “analog” sound from them. Especially the 73 and A5 (API). Seems to hit a new level of analog punch from software. But UA and Plug-in Alliance also version of both that I like too. So by all means, use whichever you have. Thank you for watching Mark!
This was fire! 😀🔥 More of this would be highly appreciated 👌🏻👌🏻 Question; does the “humming tale” on the snare not bother you? Like, it will not be audible in the mix?
Thank you! More is on the way 🎉 The resonance would really be song dependent. On this song on I remember well that we were playing along to some loop bits with a variety of backbeat elements. So everyone felt like we needed that rain for a sense of aggression and also separation. In the mix, it actually worked great. I’m pretty big on snare drum tuning matching this song. Check it out, Caleb Lovely “Smile”. Thanks again
I guess the song didn't change key. That could get quite unpleasant otherwise. Since I never write a song that doesn't change key, I couldn't ever leave a snare humming like this. Drum tuning is fairly irrelevant for me because I use so many non-diatonic chords.
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell I just went to listen to the song, and it's tight. There is no resonant tail and I'm purposefully listening for it. Are you certain you kept it? Cheers.
Super cool! I must be doing something right, cause I felt like I was watching Joe describe my drum workflow almost exactly! Question: Why do many mixers put their SD sample track as a separate track? I use my Trigger plugin on the SD track and use/automate the mix knob in Trigger. In the past, when I have made my trigger a separate track, I had to group it to the SD track for volume adjust, seems like more hassle?
I personally always want mine printed as a separate track. It will live with the project forever and never be tied to a sample that isn’t part of that session. Plus, typically I will EQ it or compress it or send it to parallel treatments differently than I do the primary drum.
PLAP'ers - almost all videos really revolve around rock music. Any chance Joe or others would do a look at plugins in other genres? Like a Jazz kit or other popular music? I know the tips translate but many videos sound like how to beef things up for rock recordings.
The kit plugins neve looks nice, they also have a new API. They are a very shady company though- and though I purchased the earlier neve eq they made (which is very good) I cant bring myself to buy more of their products. Great tips, lovely video. Loving your drum pack!
Especially because each time they boost their value. BB $99 n73 $150 API $200. So the API is double the value of the BB that put them on the map?! No… it just makes it so subscribing to a handful of plugins seems more viable when the time comes.
@@jorykevinberger7047 correct. Also, the whole conundrum with the BB EQ they “modeled”. Paul Third (correctly) roasted them on that. Literally a straight-up 20 year old textbook EQ algorithm with a fancy GUI. They even did a shootout with a real unit and LPFed the source at like 10kHz or something the hide the horrible cramping (I may have the exact specifics wrong, but you can check out the Paul Third videos for exact details).
That was a great video! Although I must say that I got very distracted by the ringing of the snare when compressed. Maybe it's a tom ringing with the snare hits, but that tone got very distracting.
Amazing video! Thanks so much. I do have a question.. I see that the drums and parallel comp are being sent to your "Buss DnB." Would that be for just the drums here? Or would you also send bass (bass guitar, bass synths) through that as well? Have seen that before and would just love to know. Thanks again!
Was that low ringing driving anyone else crazy? I could tell the overall drum tone was improving, but all I could focus on was that G3 ringing out. I'm sure that's something that could be notched out, so I wish it had been for the purposes of this demo even if it sounded fine in the context of a song.
The snare drum, I think. It was driving me crazy. It's okay for drums to have a distinct note, but that was way too loud. I would have notched some of it out.
Been working through this video today on my drums…. The neve on my snare in particular is a revelation! Can anyone suggest an alternative to the Lindell on the drum bus? I can’t buy any more plug ins!!!
I thought the fastest attack on an 1176 was 7? I seem to remember it being counter-intuitive isn't it? I think the 1176 is fairly unique in this regard. Is it different on the BF76?
Joe, how many times per week do you exercise at home or at gym??? Amazingly looking sound engineer is a key to gain attention to our inudstry. Usually when it comes up to “sound engineer” it’s not greatly lookin guys… (i’m not gay and not hitting on you) just complimenting.
Haha. Thank you sir. It always differs depending on my workload, but I definitely like to get in there a couple times a week. It’s key to my mental focus to handle the long days and workloads. Honestly think it’s just as good, if not better, for my brain than it is anything.
There's a snare resonance (it's the snare right?) that never got addressed. Are we just to assume that that got taken care of eventually? It stayed there through the entire video.
I find that sometimes, after dialling in a great setting in the moment, if I reopen the session next day etc even though it's the same setting i.e. gating settings , it reacts differently ,, which is making me think I should capture each sound as I go but that could be a massive pain in the ass. I was using nuendo and the ssl channel strip 2 plug UC1. Im thinking maybe it could be the daw. For sure the other day I was on some percussion and had dialled in amazing gate sound but reopened the session and it was 'spitting' not how it was on the original day; I believe that its important to 'capture' the magic, on time based stuff, like gated percussions, and, the first vocal reverb automated ride and delay etc. But even though that is my observation, Im not going to lol because that would be a pain in the ass! I might however at the end of a long mixing session bounce down all files though because I SWEAR TO YOU it sound different the next day lol.
I stopped using the SSL plugins. To my ears it felt like they were simulating the “SSL punch” by maybe using transient shaping? I have zero evidence of this, I want to be careful to say - but - what is an EQ doing giving punch to a sound??? I want an EQ, not more attack every time I use a plug. As always, YMMV. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you James. When I say analog “punch” I’m more referring to when adding high mid frequency or boosting substantially through the eq (and it’s active electronic circuitry) it hits harder after processing. A very different thing than a digital signal boost without hitting either a real or virtual analog circuit. It’s very hard to put into words, but API and SSL are two of the very best for this. Which is why they became THE sound of modern aggressive music whereas other circuits and digital software can sound “polite” or soft. Which is also valuable. Again very hard to put into words. But I use various tools to shape the end result. Am I trying to push the listener back in their chair with power? Am I Trying to pull them towards the speakers with warm round edges? It’s a huge part of the craft to me
Now the question becomes is it the plugins per se or the awesome EQ moves that Warren and others of his calibre have taught as I suspect the final product would sound almost as good on stock plugins although I would rather stub my toe than stay with stock lololol

Great question! The bass does indeed get sent to this subgroup with the drums and percussion. So it’s all moving together with the compressor
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell Thanks for answering! Will definitely try this on future mixes!
Can I give a 2 Tumbs Up ... Thanks Joe, Great suff
Awesome vid!!!
Thanks ever so much
Thank you John!!!
Great ep Joe
Thank you Rick👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼✌🏼
Those snare samples that are loaded into trigger sound great. Are those Joe's personal samples or commercial samples?
Thank you! Those are mine BUT they are available at Drum Sample Shop 🎉
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell great. Thanks for the reply Joe. Appreciate it. Cheers.
Absolutely amazing video! Thank you for this.
Thank you for watching!
I like this guy. Great stuffs 💯
Thank you Joel!
Thanks Joel!
im curious where the samples you use in trigger come from...or are they samples you made sir ??
Like that shirt - do they do one without a chest pocket?
Haha. I have no idea. But thank you and thank you for watching 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
I love how Joe sounds like Ted Lasso
I don’t know who that is but I hope he has a nice voice. 😂 thank you for watching Michael
It's a good tv show.
Thank you by the way, I learned something
again.. valuable content! awesome!
Great as always Joe!🤘
Thank you friend. Have a good week 🎉
SSL all the way, just works every time.
Slate FG-X has the transient-pop-out-knob
It sure does. I like using that plug-in as the last buss limiter on the master when sending out for client approval. It’s a good one.
Love you Joe!
Thank you Rich! Very appreciated. Love you and the PLAP family as well. Such a great community Warren has assembled.
How about all the hardware in the background , is that for tracking or do you use some in a hybrid mixing setup?
Was that low ringing driving anyone else crazy? I could tell the overall drum tone was improving, but all I could focus on was that G3 ringing out. I'm sure that's something that could be notched out, so I wish it had been for the purposes of this demo even if it sounded fine in the context of a song.
Been saying for ages the SSL X-saturator is the best saturation plugin around , maybe now people will believe me
It’s a monster!!!! Thanks for watching Clinton.
where is that ringing (open G) coming from when you play the track?
The snare drum, I think. It was driving me crazy. It's okay for drums to have a distinct note, but that was way too loud. I would have notched some of it out.
Been working through this video today on my drums…. The neve on my snare in particular is a revelation! Can anyone suggest an alternative to the Lindell on the drum bus? I can’t buy any more plug ins!!!
It's a lot easier to.mix when the recording is eqd and compressed on the recording for sure
I thought the fastest attack on an 1176 was 7? I seem to remember it being counter-intuitive isn't it? I think the 1176 is fairly unique in this regard. Is it different on the BF76?
You're right. Joe made an earlier comment correcting what he said before the video was released :)
You’re absolutely right. I also have a knack for saying hi pass or Lo pass backwards. Stay tuned for more speaking errors 😂😂😂 thank you for watching!!
marvelous
Thanks ever so much
Thank you for watching!
Great tips. I wish sample replacement would stop. Its like in modern stop motion when they use vfx to smooth out the artifacts. Imo.
Anyone else hearing a ring of about 190hz in some of those drum tracks? Seems like the parallel comp is really bringing it out.
Great video :-)
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you sir !
🙌🏼 SSL 😍
Marvellous!
L-O-V-E SSL 🔥🔥

27:50 He's saying about fast attack and slow release, but on the 76 it's exactly the opposite. Am I missing smth?
great, but I wish you'd notched out a lil' bit of that 200 ring on the snare.. got reeeally annoying. ;D
I might however at the end of a long mixing session bounce down all files though because I SWEAR TO YOU it sound different the next day lol.
great video Joe :)
Joe (and warren),, that was amazingly insightful. Great!
Joe man, those plugins sound amazing!!! That api kit plug after the ssl is amazing! - thanks
Thank you for watching Chris. Have a great week 🎉
Please where i can get tjat samples for trigger 2?
Those few examples you heard are from Drum Sample Shop. That’s actually my own signature sample pack. Thank you for watching!
really great
😹😹😹😹 i love joe
Thank you!!
