- The NBA is changing things up for this coming season. Flopping will be punished more severely but the In-Season Tournament is what people are really heated about. This is a look at the Tournament including the jersey change.

If there was a second tournament in the NBA, it should be for the 10 worst teams battling for a better draft spot
Yeah I'd be cool with that.
That would be sweet.
People have been saying this for years but what people do talk about is do you think anybody wants 2 play for their replacement
I feel the reason nobody cares for this is because it’s just Nba teams vs other Nba teams, unlike in football you have tournaments like the champions league but the reason half the world cares about them is because well one football is by far the biggest sport but also it’s clubs from the best leagues from different countries going up against each other, you got the best clubs from the Premier League from England, you got the top clubs from Liga Santander from Spain, top Clubs from Serie A from Italy, top clubs from Ligue 1 from France and the top clubs in the Budesliga from Germany, and other top clubs from leagues as well, that’s why so many people care about the champions league and if the Nba want to do the sam they need to make this in season tournament against the top teams from the top leagues across the world like the champions league is!

The NBA should really consider doing a Champions League type of tournament where NBA teams play vs European elite teams. The audiences and fans in Europe are insane and the level of play is really competitive. That would help the expansion of the markets for the NBA.
Facts. They used to do exhibition regular season NBA games in London, the market is there. But they need a Euro team in the mix to shake things up.
Now this is a good idea. Europe is seriously underrated.
That’s what they should do for the in season tournament
The time difference would be problematic. If Europeans were to see those matches in USA those matches would have to be very early, like 2 or 3 pm.
It will get there! 20 years ago the rest of the world was so far behind but the game has gotten really popular and more competitive
The only reason viewship is down for the NBA is because the majority of the games are on cable and network app in which you have to pay to watch games. In the 90's we could watch basketball on normal broadcast TV like NBC and ABC. And as a Laker fan growing up they had game on the local affiliate stations. But the NBA and it's owners got greedy. I can "guarantee (Charles Barkley Voice) that if they moved more regular seasons games to network channels the viewship would go up.
For real. I don’t get to see many laker games for that reason, I can only imagine what it’s like for the hornets
Yeah, my suns are finally getting away from the Bally sports model and will put their games on locally again. I agree
This is true and constantly selling viewership rights to different apps, making the company's compete but it leaves fans with a choice "a new subscription and fee , or simply don't watch "Even in the playoffs, some platforms didn't have the games even when it's your local team on certain days...the money and greed trying to force people to pay for multiple providers and even the players today are paid to the point that they are fragile, can buy anything they want and there is no more satisfaction, they seem miserable and unmotivated because they played to get paid, and got it, rather than playing to be the best and prove to themselves they can always get better or reach for the stars ,while getting paid to do it.
The reason ABC and others broadcasted in the past is because it would get high viewership. They stopped broadcasting due to low viewership in comparison to Kardashians etc.
As someone who enjoys Football (Soccer as you lot call it) and Basketball, I'd say the NBA regular season never really mattered to me till the playoffs began, this can be another way for good NBA players to win stuff and not just go out sad in the playoffs. Football has so much variety the relegation system means no one loses games on purpose, which is a weird concept to me when I started following the NBA consistently
Well you do realize your system is weird to us right?
@@imtoxiq_ Yeah I get it, it's a culture shock on both sides
If American pro sports implemented relegation, it'd be an absolute game changer and be very good for the sport. The NFL is plagued with teams that are consistently garbage and don't ever have to face the consequences of relegation.

@@Grievous_this is more akin to a domestic cup like the FA Cup or Copa Del Rey but I get your point. I like the international tournament idea and the FA Cup lower league idea.
Upsets and excitement happen quite regularly in the FA Cup. My favourite was a game in the 3rd round between Liverpool (a European giant, 1st-6th best team) and Havant & Waterlooville (in the 6th division, around the 120th-140th best team) It was a scrappy, back and fourth game that H&W wouldn't give up in. Its ended 5-3 to Liverpool.
I'd love to see stuff like that in basketball.
I actually like the new tournament, We need to have more things to compete for to make teams more competitive, I think this will help build rivalries too
Exactly, plus I don't hate the fact that players will have something else in their resumé, lets say Chuck won this back in his day, he would obviously still get teased about not winning the chip, nobody would say this cup would be a substitute, but he wouldn't have gone his whole career without a title, I think it's cool, it's something extra for the players to fight for and IMO it doesn't take away from the Larry O'B at all.
@@victorf6672 Yeap, this stuff the euro soccer teams do and it’s great for their league , this could also help us branch out and set something worldwide to the FIBA LEAGUES.

Jesus loves you and may God bless you......
Yes
I agree.
It would be more meaningful if they have the tournament every 2 years or something
They only schedule 80 games and then the final 2 games are scheduled based on who advances
Thank u for explaining this truly cause not many people were fond of this
But it goes to show how much the players didn’t take the regular season seriously anymore
And why , cause of load management and etc
But thankfully it’s only a in season tournament and at least playoffs are still going To be intact
That sucks, coz individual awards are won in the regular season, which build individual legacies. Rings are not enough, get some individual hardware too
Another really good video production and it was very informative. Thank you man!
Bro, I love the breakdown!! Thanks for the update… also, this makes me pumped up to start next season!
In Europe these quick midseason tournaments generate great expectations.
I like the idea of another tournament for teams out of playoff, playing for a better position for lottery picks. Far better than tanking.
I love the idea of including international teams in this tournament. It then becomes a pride thing for everybody. NBA is known to be the league where the highest level of basketball is played so the players would be fighting to defend that and the international team would obviously be gunning to take them down. I'd imagine a China team would be super motivated because of all the "send em to China" memes. The logistics of this thing would be crazy so I'd doubt this would happen anytime soon if ever.
Thank you for calling out the fact that the FA Cup includes teams from all divisions. It’s a huge difference. It would be awesome to include G league teams in this tournament and great for the smaller towns those teams play in. I can imagine the Australian NBL, the Puerto Rico league and a few other international leagues would be willing to make the trip to the states for a cup game as well. Australia already sends teams mid season to play against nba teams doing their pre season games so they’d love the publicity.
Make it a “World Champs Cup” - then it will be similar to euro champions league!
Think of the nightmare for the league if the “lesser” teams embarrass the league. It would be dumb for them to do.
@@rrpostalagain all the league cares about is rarings, if that guarantees good ratings they will do it!

I like this. It’s during the toughest part of the season to get through. So it gives players motivation until the All Star break. Plus a bonus 500k for the winner? That’s great incentive for them to play hard. NBA is smart to be trying new things. An in season tournament could also attract more eyes who will want to tune in for the Playoffs.
Love your analysis and passionate commentary
I'm all down for this change. As a new viewer from the bay area that had surface level knowledge about the NBA prior to this season starting, this looks exciting. I'm more curious as to how it'll play out rather than being skeptical about it, as I can agree with some people that the regular season doesn't feel as memorable right now even though there are a few moments I can recall.
Yeah I Tweeted them this idea of motivating teams during the regular season with an inside tournament of sorts. I also told them to have homestands to remove a lot of travel fatigue and they started doing that last year. Funny how that works.
Love the content brotha 🙏🏽
I actually believe the in-season tourny will encourage younger players and teams to play harder. Similar to the Bubble. A lot of the NBA don't make Lebron, Ja Morant, and other stars money so that extra $500,000 would help them A LOT. I'm excited for this

i like the midseason tournament so that it will incentize player to keep on playing and play hard which is dumb in the first place as players in the past almost always play the full season WIHTOUT EXTRA incentives (shows the entitlement of todays players)
why do you think, THEY HAVE TO ADD the 500k per player for the winner?
"pretty GOATish"?
Just what we need. More players from yesteryear being passed on the all-time list based on accolades that didn't exist when they played.
The big stars don't care about anything but the playoffs. Kawhi for example is literally only active in the playoffs.

The league shouldn't reward poor performance. Many teams are one or two pieces away from a solid team. They should reward the top draft picks to those teams that may have just missed the playoffs. Make the bottom tier teams fight to drastically put a better unit together instead of tanking their season. That would make things more competitive.

Casey's suggestion on the in-season tournament is spot-on, and is totally from someone who is knowledgeable of football (not handegg). Good job Casey.
The only rlly problem I have with the in season tournament is that if good player from a contender gets hurt that ruins their chances at a chip
But it counts towards the regular season so it’s no different to any other game
Great video. Football ⚽️ tournaments work because there’s teams from different divisions or different countries, so it’s not just the same teams over and over again. NBA needs to adopt this model

You are Brazilian but have an Argentina profile pic lol
Even baseball made a lot of changes this year. Pitch clock, automatic runner in scoring position in extra innings, all sorts of stuff to advance the game.
The biggest problem for baseball in my opinion is a lack of batted balls in play. Too many at bats end with either a strikeout, flyout, or a home run.
@@de132 Exactly line drives and base hits are the funnest

Correct, the MLB further ruined their game and took a big shit all over their own history. Smart move.
The cup is great idea and it is trying to emulate the format of European team sports. I believe that it can really work but the NBA needs to make one single change. They need to reduce the season games down to around 60 games like its a lockout season. That way Playoff seeding becomes a lot more competitive and the stakes in the Play in are amped up. Fewer games also means that Cup games matter more making the trophy actually worth something. The Cup final should be just before the Playoffs start in order to generate hype as an end of season finale
European leagues work because you have multiple professional leagues within country and continent.

@rustyray420 I get it but Champions League is effective because you have a lot of good leagues in Europe. Over all I'd say the Premier League is the best but Seria A Ligue 1 Bundesliga LA Liga even Erdivise can hang. I guess over the years other leagues could catch up to the NBA
I feel like a lot of the reason why basketball viewership is down compared to NFL is that the NFL has games on public TV and the NBA is exclusive on cable.

In Europe in every sport we have a Championship (with a regular season and sometimes playoffs) but also Cup games with quarterfinals, semifinals and a Final game. Sometimes the Cup games are even more exciting especially for teams with less talent who can win a Trophy. In Most sports we also have a SuperCup game where the winner of the Championship and the Cup meet before the start of the Season for a nice game and a trophy to spice up the upcoming season.

This is somewhat similar to the WNBA's Commissioner's Cup, and honestly, I didn't hate that format there (regular season games counting towards Cup play where top record in each conference meets in the Final at the midway point of the season). The playoff spot on the line seems like the only way to make it matter....I think it should go like this... First place gets automatic top five playoff spot based off their end of season record....second gets top 8 seed and third place gets a draft pick to spice it up to make the rewards system fluid....each year they should poll the fans to see what the next years winners rewards look like...that will engage the fans as well

Salary cap exception is a good idea.
I'm not sure this tournament is going to get the players to show up and try
And if the players were showing up and trying, the regular season might attract more fans.
Maybe the problem is that the arena is always full and the players are probably not going over the tv numbers so it's like,
Arena's full, what's the problem?
And the contracts are just getting weird, one team mate making 10x another...
Great video btw, i like your videos like this one the most. Not that gossip like about Ja.
I personally lost some interest because the game turned into a 3pt contest, flopping, diva stars abusing not playing due to the smallest reason, lack of defense and 'frail' big men. I miss the 90's to early 2000's stars 😢
December is too early for a "mid season" tournament. Also GP min for awards needs to have minute mins per game as well
Why people ignoring the fact that the nba rating has gone down because it’s almost dam near impossible to watch now. Back then you could easily turn on the Tv and watch it but now you have to do a whole scavenger hunt to see what network is playing the game with a expensive cost
even baseball made a ton of changes this year - adding pitch clocks (which have shortened games by 30 mins on avg) bigger bases for more steals, and banning defensive shifts to increase hits
My suggestion is that the winner or winners (1st and second?) of the mid season tournament are guaranteed homecourt advantage for all first playoff games or something simillar. So essentially they steal a homecourt game from their opposing team post season. The stakes are too low for the winners and i think this is high enough incentive for competitive play that would even carry over to the post season
Edit: i type this before finishing the video, i like AM's suggestion way better
Edit edit, i guess am suggest my suggestion too 😂 ripperínos
I like the idea of the tournament! I just think there should be higher stakes for winning like a guaranteed spot in the playoffs with extra rest days or paycap increase- something really enticing for the whole team to give it their all
Imagine if players had a sliding base salary adjusted for talent and then the rest of the money was literally distributed to teams after wins. Imagine if every game felt like the in season tournament. Also tourney for draft picks with bottom teams. Competition not load management and falling asleep until April.
We should have the all star teams versus international all star teams too that would be fire
If they want better viewership. Maybe change the game times to at least become watchable elsewhere. I usually watch the games that are live between 8;30PM and 1AM but most games are around 3AM and 6AM my time.. which is hard to keep up with
Completely randomize the draft lottery to give each team equal odds at the number 1 pick. That would decentivize tanking completely.
bruh all nba needs to do is to make the tickets more cheap💀💀
Winner of in season tournament should get automatic 1 seed, now watching teams playing at their highest level in november and december will bring in a ton of viewers
I love this idea...makes season games more important, give more content/stats to for analyst to digest, and it gives us fans more narratives to follow and enjoy...the nba is in my opinion the best league already, but, I'd love to see if appreciated by more people
The tournament finals should've been way later in the season. Early Decemeber for a final is wayyyyy to early.
Neutral Final Stadium-W
1 game Elim-W
Conference restricted groups-L
2 games a week-L (should be 1/more spread out)
4 game group stage-N
Only NBA teams-L
Main problem for me is the scheduling. You can't have a final 25% into the season. Putting the quarters and semis before all star break and the final after it (or all knockout phase after all star break) would build up way more anticipation and allow for way more advertising to the more casual fan
Man I can't believe even the playoffs didn't get in last years top 100 watched events. Wow! Something has got to change.
I believe the new midseason tournament will be similar to the cups in european soccer, and I think it's a great idea due to the following reasons:
1. It will generate new narratives. Imagine a team winning the title but loosing the tournament... Would they be worst than a team that won both? IIt's like the Bulls being 72-10 and winning it all vs the Warriors 73-9 but loosing in the finals discussion;
2. The better and richer teams might be favorites to win it, but sometimes they will use that opportunity to rest players and give minutes to youngsters, and even if the best players participate, the single elimination game format will naturally make some upsets and make the middle of the season more exciting;
3. Even tho it affects the regular season games, it will be a different tournament, therefore it will give opportunities to mid of the table teams to compete for something and hopefully prevent tanking;
4. It might become a way to show us what are the real up and coming teams in the league. They might not be ready for the title, but they are already competing in the tournament...
What do you guys think? I don't really see any negatives.
Dude them jerseys in the thumbnail look great and I like the idea of the in season tournament and definitely the flop penalty
The in season tournament sounds like a waste of time. What would work much better is a draft lottery tournament where the bottom 8 teams get put into the lottery, and they have to play each other in double elimination to move up in draft order. The lottery determines pick order but also your bracket placement. So if you fall all the way to 8, you play the team with the number one pick, and can steal it by winning, but then have to beat the winner of 4vs5 then 3vs6 or 2vs7. If 1 loses to 8 they get the 8th pick but then they have to play the loser of 4vs5 to get the 4th or 5th pick if they win, or be stuck with pick 8. This would force teams to stop tanking and actually compete.
This new in season tournament sounds dope!
If it was a automatic playoff spot if you win that would be so unfair and horrible, I’m glad they didn’t do that. Pretty excited about this tournament!
I like it although I would like a bigger reward for towards the regular season. An automatic playoff spot is too much of an award. How about making a point system for the season. Example a point per regular season win and reward the in season tournament champion 3 points or something. It's a little motivation and a nice head start in the standings heading into December. Maybe include a division tournament near the end of the season to get a few more sesson points. When the league gets to 32 teams, 4 8 team divisions would be perfect for that.
I've seen their circumstances where a team can get An extra game because of this tournament. And I wonder what will happen if this happens to the same team for say 10 years In a row.
Flopping has been a problem for decades and these "rules" do not eradicate them. Remember when the NBA implemented the no call on players who like to bait fouls?
Yep, that did not last long.
In Germany in Football, we have the cup like forever. The cool thing here is, that lower league teams can participate here aswell. Sometimes they beat bigger teams and then it is always a great story. sometimes real amateurs can get inside.
as an european, and a football fan (soccer), this makes perfect sense. every single league also has a "cup" knockout style tournament.
A knockout tournament should be all of the non-playoff teams. Run it during the 2nd/3rd rd of the Playoffs, when some days don't have any PO games. Single game elimination, college-style, and determines draft order. This way every single team has meaningful games in May, and every team will want to put the most competitive team they can out there.
I actually excited to see what they do in terms of making the reg season more entertaining and hey maybe some of the courts and jerseys will look baaaaad ass 🤘🏻🤘🏻
That's not the way to play for Cup Trophy, just look how it's done all over the world...
Can you think about an invite of the top 8 Euroleague teams to that end tournament? That would spice things up... Sadly this would only work if the NBA would change to the FIBA rules... no def 3 sec, touching the ball while over the rim, different traveling rules aso aso... sadly that will never happen.
the thing I don't like about the new tournament is that it just rewards stacked teams. Like even if bad teams who usually tank played their best, they're most likely not gonna win a big prize and will most likely be effort for nothing.
6:35 yeah something like that happened, real madrid lost to a small team.
Honestly it doesnt sound that bad, if its part of the regular season and the extra tournament is highlighted with another jersey ( honestly I would love to see crazier jersey designs but well)
But well ,
Its a bold strategy cotton, lets see if it pays off for em 😅
Those thumbnail jerseys 🔥 ngl
I want to know how this will affect regular season records. I thought I heard they count but the teams that advance will play more games then. Does that mean at the end of the season, there will be 4 teams that have played 83 games, 2 teams that played 84 and 2 that played 85?
The teams that make the championship game will play an 83rd game. It will not count in the standings though. :/
All the other teams will get to 82 games
I think its quite a creative ignition into fair, even competition!
I'd say viewership is down due to how the networks operate. Their were fewer ways to watch the NBA back in the day than it is today.
Refs need to be held to a higher standard and actually call fouls regardless of how big the player is who is being fouled. If I get hacked every time going to the r8m and no foul is called what you think is going to happen.
It's all cause and effect.
There should be a tournament the worst teams playing for the draft picks!!! Let’s get this started
Dude has the smoothest plug for his videos
The worst thing with nba games for me is absurd amount of timeouts. It's impossible to watch games cuz' your'e watching tv commercials instead almost every 3-4 minutes
I still don't like this or even the play in. I am in favor of shortening the season to 58 games (everyone plays eachother twice, once at home, once away) but why not still have the season be the same length time wise and just have the games more spread out? Then there would be more hype for games because teams would only play 2-3 times a week and players woud get hurt less and subsequently wanna rest less because the schedule isn't as crazy. This simple change takes away the need for the in season tourney and the play in as well as anti resting rules like the minimum game requirement.
