You're doing something very typical for ballet (and figure skating). You don't just quit letting your free leg slump down. You draw it in turning your knee to the side while the foot wanders towards your standing leg. In a controlled and beautiful motion. Those details separating the experienced from the beginners.
You're correct, it is a technique very similar to ballet. A lot of ballet exercises are very beneficial for ice skaters. This is why it is a very popular thing to do to help develop competitive skaters. You can always tell the skaters who have had ballet training to the ones who have not!
This is amazing and I can’t believe it! I did this once on both sides before I went to sleep yesterday and this morning I woke up to a beautiful spiral not having to hold onto anything. For the first time! This is so incredibly helpful. I’ll definitely do it every day.
You want to get a good deep knee bend if you can, but you need to be careful as it can be tough on the knees. Typically in a gym you are taught to not leg your knees pass your toes when doing exercises in order to protect your knees. Unfortunately, in skating your knees often goes past your toes when bending if you are doing deep edges and skating fast. We would recommend that you bend the knee as much as you are comfortable doing so. As you get stronger, you can go a little bit deeper in the knee, but don't force it! Listen to your body and if you have any doubts, make sure you consult a doctor/physio first.
