They are both technically correct, just different variations (outside edge T stop vs inside edge T stop). I think a lot of coaches will encourage the outside edge variant more due to it having better stopping power when executed correctly, as well as looking more aesthetically pleasing. The inside version is still pretty useful for a beginner as a useful starting point though.
Figure skaters often say this. Because their goal is to make all the movements pretty and flowing. Dragging a blade behind you is not very pretty and elegant. If you are just skating for fun then it's not an issue. If you can't stop any other way then use it. Better than nothing and running into people. Other figure skaters might cringe at seeing you do it that way, but so what.

If I try an inside edge T stop, my blade makes a horrible screaching sound on the ice. The outside edge ones are clean though. Something about my blade / what I'm doing causes a resonance that sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do a T-stop. I naturally Intoe, so it’s already a challenge keeping my feet straight and I use an insole but getting my feet to go in that direction is just physically not able to happen because my ankle can’t turn that far out and stay in place 😢
It would be wise to get even the cheapest figure skating boot instead because rentals will not give you consistency……bad idea to learn to skate in rentals, in other words. The blades will be badly sharpened and not to mention it will not fit your foot properly like getting your own pair of boots will. It doesn’t need to be too expensive. $100-150 to start. Good luck!
I used the lesson skates for a good 6 months before I fully committed to skating and bought my own. Things are going to be a little more difficult, because they're usually incredibly blunt, but it is definitely achievable. Start with them and then move up to some decent intermediate boots when you decide you want to commit to it!
