    I think this has to be the most detailed and explanatory video I've seen on forward crossovers. I love the way you break everything down to smaller parts. That really helps us beginners understand where to start, and what we may be doing wrong. I've just managed to get a lot better at my forward crossovers (one direction only LOL) but this video is going to help me get better from this point onwards. Thanks very much.

    Hello Ice Coach. I love your tutorials, they’re really, really good. Do you think you could wear lighter coloured trousers, though? It would make it easier to differentiate your legs when they’re close together. That would be very helpful. Thanks for your great videos.

      Thanks for the great feedback! You bring up a very valid point. Since we have a lot of footage filmed with these coloured trousers, we will do our best to correct the colours of the videos when editing. In future videos, we will try to wear a better choice of colours to help make things clearer. Thanks again for letting us know.

    What unlocked forward crossovers for me was getting to where I could skate straight forward with legs crossed and hold it. You can use the waist high wall to get it down. Just don't get too close to the wall. My back skate hit it crossing it under me and fell opps. This totally helped in knowing how to position my foot as I put it down on the crossover. Surely I'm not the only one who thought this might help? Anyway I've seen no one suggest this move. I didn't pick up my foot. I'd just slide them into position, hold and balance (using wall if feeling unsteady) then uncross agsin. Then when I tried a crossover foot came down perfectly in position.

    This has been so helpful, it’s great you are showing what the common errors are, I’ve been trying crossover for a few months and just can’t get them I thought my legs where too chubby as I never manage to have enough space to cross then but now I realised thanks to your video that I keep a very open hip when trying to cross my feet. Excellent video, thank you for uploading and looking forward to next one (perhaps edges, please?) 💙⛸

      OMG SAMMEEEE I searched how long it took people to do crossovers usually and in quora I saw someone said 20-40mins and I'm like -____-

      @@orange_leaf4913 I wouldn't pay much attention to that! Everyone learns at their own pace, and some people are quicker at some things and slower at others. I have taught people that pick up crossovers reasonably quick but really struggle on other things like a snowplough stop. Crossovers are usually a tough move to learn and even harder to master. - Lloyd

      @@IceCoachOnline I practiced forward crossovers today and I noticed my front foot making that drop sound on the ice. I don't think I'd have noticed that being a problem if I hadn't watched this. Of course you also do a great job of demonstrating and explaining the correct way, too, which is essential!

      I want to make a specific video explaining the difference is in the future. However as a visual reference, In the middle of this video I am demonstrating crossovers and during the end screen there is a slow motion video of me doing progressives.
      The reason I did it like this is because progressives are essentially like very good crossovers. The foot doesn't lift up and over to change feet, but instead sneaks around the side then cuts across in front.

    Thank you so much. I've been waiting for this video. I'm trying to learn the forward crossovers and currently struggling with it. Do you have any off-ice exercises for forward crossovers? If so, what exercises can I do at the gym to improve them?

      Glad you enjoyed the video. Can you elaborate on what part of the crossover you are finding difficult?
      As for off ice exercises to help you, I would suggest general stability work. For example, getting a wobble / Bosu board and standing on it on one leg. Practice standing on the left leg, then lift your foot up like to are doing a crossover to change to the other leg. Repeat on both sides.

      @@IceCoachOnline Thank you for your quick reply. I really appreciate it. I'll work on gen. stability. As for my difficult part, I believe it's mostly mental for me. I guess I'm not comfortable yet with crossing my foot over on ice. It scares me tbh. I sometimes visualize myself falling over. Yet, I know that I need to repeat this process again and again (including taking deep breaths and trusting myself) until my mind and body memorize the moves. Thanks again Lloyd 😊

      @@aleli.tir0502 make sure you try and stay relaxed when learning. If you're too tense you increase the risk of hurting yourself if you fall. Also, being able to hold a nice solid outside edge on a curve will help you with feeling more confident crossing the leg over.       @@aleli.tir0502 Btw. whatever is scary doing, if you e.g. start from the steps they showed on the line. You can do those along the barricade. Let your hands either hover above or just place your hands lightly to make sure you're not leaning on them. But it helps getting a secure feeling for crossing legs.

    Hey coach, I am able to do the crossovers perfectly but I struggle with maintaining them crossed for at least 5 seconds, what do you think is the problem? Also do you have any advice for not using your toe picks?

    Hi!! not sure if anyone will reply but i have habit of panicking or not putting my foot down enough. my coaches tell me to stomp and plant my foot but i just get too scared. If put my foot down too hard I fall. i am able to glide on one foot, but whenever it comes to crossovers i cross my feet but feel the need to immediately put my next foot forward. are there any techniques? like leaning more? I’m not really sure. Is it okay to glide while your feet are crossed and then bringing your next foot?

      It's hard to pinpoint exactly what the exact issue is without seeing it for myself, but I can certainly speculate as to what it is.
      When you say that putting your foot down too hard makes you fall, it makes it sound like your body positioning is incorrect. If I had incorrect body positioning and try a crossover, I could make myself fall too. I would guess that your hips are not angled slightly to face the centre of the circle. Your upper body might also not be rotated to the centre of the circle. This would increase the chances of you tripping yourself up on the crossover.
      Something that might help you would be working on holding your one foot glides on a circle, doing both inside edge and then trying outside edge too. You can practice with different free leg positions too, for example Leg back, Free leg touching skating leg, and free leg forwards.
      The better you get at balancing doing those edges with different free leg position, the easier your crossovers will become as now you know where you want your balance on each edge, and your only task is learning to successfully transfer your weight in-between each foot.
      Eventually you'll want to not be stuck gliding on the leg crossed position as it's not a very efficient way of doing crossovers. The end goal of crossovers is to learn to push with your legs and propel you weight onto the next foot generating speed and power Before reaching this point, we need to learn how to correctly balance our weight, position our body, and transfer from one foot to another.

    Thank you so much for this video, explanation and common mistakes are very helpful. What I trip on repeatedly (well, twice, but it has sent me flying over the ice) - when I cross the foot over and place it on the ice, I get toe pick first. It sends me straight flying into the ice. Doesn’t happen a lot and only on my ‘bad side’. I guess it’s related to the foot not being flexed enough. However I don’t seem to have a feeling for it. I only know I did it wrong cause I fell down. Is there an exercise I could practise, especially on the bad side, to develop a feel for it without this dramatic fall. Thank you!

      you might want to build up some strenght to flex your foot better in your skates. As a warm up exercise before getting on the ice, try walking on you heels (in your shows not skates) not letting your toes touch the floor. This will strengthen your ability to flex your feet in your skates.

      Great idea, I've just done that the length of my living room and back as that's something else I've done wrong in past. Felt like a penguin but hey ho, if it improves my skating the indignity is worth it😅.

    So that's what went wrong with my CW crossover. My legs were too far apart on the actual cross part. I was a bit better going CCW.
