    If you get 18M sulfuric acid on your skin, DO NOT WASH IT OFF WITH WATER. The water will boil on contact with the acid! Just drop a little 18M acid in a beaker of water, and you'll see what I mean. Neutralize the acid with a weak base, like sodium hydrogen carbonate. The same applies to strong alkali, like sodium hydroxide, which can be neutralized with dilute acetic acid (vinegar).

      Nevir202 I am currently an AP student, and I can honestly say that the dumbest people I have encountered at school could demonstrate safety better than this guy.
      If he’s going to mock students for not understanding how dangerous this acid is, he could at least bother to demonstrate proper use of safety equipment (no apron, messing around without having done them previously 2:28)
      If you’re going to mock students for being dumb, I’d like you to keep in mind that the point of being a student is to learn. If you’re going to insist that students today are dumber than the students of past generations, I’m reminding you that as generations pass, scientific knowledge increases, and therefore the amount of information available to this generation greatly surpasses the information available to previous ones. Todays students will grow up with the most recent and more reliable knowledge, and if you have a problem with that I’ll kindly ask you to fuck off

    Talks about lab safety, doesn't wear adequate protective gear himself. Not even gloves on both hands...
    Highly concentrated H2SO4 won't break amide bonds in nylon, the polymerization degree of Nylon is determined via viscosimetry in conc sulfuric acid

    • @Anthony-bz2xs
      @Anthony-bz2xs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      "All nylons are susceptible to hydrolysis, especially by strong acids" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nylon#Hydrolysis_and_degradation if the amide bonds arent being broken, what then is occuring?

    • @Doping1234
      @Doping1234 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The water activity in concentrated sulfuric acid is basically 0, so there's no water available for hydrolysis (the mentioned lead battery acid is just ~30%w/w which could lead to hydrolysis). The nylon just dissolves, probably because the amide groups are protonated exploding the weak bonds between the polymer chains.
      And again, how could the polymerization degree be measured in sulfuric acid when it depolymerizes? vtechworks.lib.vt.edu/bitstream/handle/10919/46806/1.549633.pdf?sequence=1

    • @Anthony-bz2xs
      @Anthony-bz2xs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the sulfuric acid disrupts the polymer-polymer bonding (H bonding, etc) but not the actual polymers amide bond as in hydrolysis. Good to know ty.

    • @Doping1234
      @Doping1234 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadler A No problem, I learnt that the amide chains are highly protonated in sulfuric acid and formic acid...the more you know...

    Well, I've thought about it, and I have to elaborate about how I feel about the humor here.
    With all due respect to the instructor, perhaps it's just me, but I find the humor here to be in poor taste because women, no matter what religion, are the beauty of the earth and have suffered a great deal on this planet. As a child, when I watched the scene in the Wizard Of Oz movie where the witch was melting, everyone around me was laughing, yet I cried. I can't completely understand it myself, but even in a fictional situation, it hurts me to think about any human being being hurt or tormented. But, I guess that's just me huh?

    But, after all, they're asking what happens when you spill sulfuric acid on your clothes.
    Therefore, hopefully he's not wearing nylon.

    I find it a bit ironic that he wasn't wearing an apron, or a lab coat. The one glove on was a nice touch.

    I like how he's supposed to be professional, and when he poured out the acid it rand down the bottle's side, and right afterwards he touched the bottle with his bare right hand..

      +VikingFevahGames Luckily it was only acetone, the main ingredient in nail polish remover. I used to play with that and Styrofoam all the time when I was ~9.

      Matthew Traver ahh, okay. I don't know much about chemistry, I just assumed it was a bottle full of sulphuric acid.

      Nah, that was just the dropper and the small bottle. the big one is the acetone.

    Sulphuric acid dissolves all clothes but polyester, formic acid dissolves nylon but not cotten, dimethylformamide dissolves acetate and elastane but not nylon or cotton, medium strength sodium hypochlorite dissolves wool and nothing else, hydrofloric acid dissolves everything but leather
