      Many engineers speak in this manner. We do it in order to not be mistaken. Often we will imagine hearing ourselves for the first time, as if we are learning each topic we discuss as a complete stranger. We don't want to tell you anything false, and we don't want to have you assume anything and blame us for leading you to these conclusions.

    What if you were to reheat the drop with a propane torch? Would it just explode as usual, or would it heat slow enough to just melt?

    • @Materials_Science
      @Materials_Science 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      you would increase the stress inside the drop (heating the outside of the glass increases the volume the outside takes up further increasing the effect that makes it so sturdy). It would probably explode, but if it's able to withstand the stress-increase survives and the drop melts it will upon melting rapidly heat up

    Windshield glass is laminated with a piece of plastic between two pieces of glass so that when it breaks the plastic holds it together so it doesn't shatter and form sharp pieces. The other windows in your vehicle are tempered safety glass though which when it breaks it forms more square, small pieces.

      probably not any bigger than an inch, Im no expert but I'm guessing that if the surface area is too large then there would be too much pressure on the thin layer of hardened glass on the outside and it would break or explode. like I said, I'm no expert so do be surprised if it completely wrong.

    Used a 4lb hammer and couldn't break! Then he disintegrated it by snipping the tail with a pair of pliers. Just a cloud of dust in 1 second. Amazing

    I hate to correct a professor, but the front windscreen in a car is laminated soft glass and not tempered. It's extremely important that the windscreen stays intact during an accident. However, the side windows and the rear window is tempered to allow for the escape of the driver and the passengers. It's this tempered glass that forms tiny cubes, laminated glass cracks into much larger pieces, but is held intact by the lamination.

    Really cool! But - it's in fact harder to crush it with the hammer on a table, compared to for example an anvil. The table is most likely a relatively soft surface. If you take a steel ball the same size (for example from a ball bearing), place it on the table and hit it with the hammer - it will just sink down into the table the same way those drops did.
    But it's still amazing as normal glass will just shatter instantly at contact with the hammer - regardless how soft the surface underneeth it is.

      The youtube channel "Smarter Every Day" recently shot some larger drops with a rifle. The slow motion footage revealed how the drop actually survives the initial impact, deflecting or shattering the bullet, up until the shockwave from the impact travels through the glass reaching and shattering the tail. The whole drop then shatters as a wave of sorts shoots from the tail end to the drop end, with an odd noticeable spiral pattern in the way the glass breaks. One of the drops he tested actually survived the rifle shot entirely.

    • @ethannumberc-1379
      @ethannumberc-1379 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Short answer, no.
      Long answer, the glass gets as hard as it does because the inner glass takes longer to cool.
      So, if it were put in liquid nitrogen instead it would cool faster and most likely explode. However if it did survive it would still not be stronger, it would be much weaker and would most likely shatter from slight shocks like just being picked up.

    • @MrChrisRab
      @MrChrisRab 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm no specialist at all, so don't take my word for granted. The best would be to get an answer from FlinnScientific . In any case, my initial guess is that you cannot create Prince Rupert drops which are spherical. The tail acts a keystone in architecture: without it, the cooling glass does not compress internal forces onto anything and therefore aren't any more solid than normal glass.
