    Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) takes water (H2O) from sugar (C12H22O11) and that left over wiered black mass is carbon (C).

    • @bradleyblankinship3424
      @bradleyblankinship3424 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      and if he puts that carbon under grond for about 100000 years or something like that he could make diamonds (true fact)

      Bradley Blankinship Diamonds can be formed within minutes or millions of years.
      Though, for the burying underground part, good luck getting 100-150km deep.

    • @svrbonoha42
      @svrbonoha42 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Bradley Blankinship The different between casual carbon (as you can see at the end of this video) and diamond is in their linkage. You can turn that linkage by high heat and pressure. So diamonds are made sintetically, but they are small and yellow so they are't as good for jewelery as natural. They are also hard as natural ones so they're used mostly in hard material cutters, dental drills etc. As iored94 sayed, it does not matter about time, heat and pressure are main.

    The black stuff is carbon, the chemical formula for sugar is C12H22O11 and sulphuric acid is a dehydrating agent [which means it gets rid of H2O(water)] so when you add the acid to the sugar, it dehydrates the water (the steam coming off) in this case the H22 and O11 and leaves you with C12 ( carbon) :)

    Pretty cool. For anyone wondering, the sulfuric acid is dehydrating the sugar, basically it's removing all the hydrogen and oxygen from the sugar in the form of steam (the fumes you see coming off). What's left over is relatively pure carbon. Pure carbon is less dense than the sugar so it occupies more volume, hence the growing.

    • @MishhhtercatOfficial
      @MishhhtercatOfficial 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dat photo.

    • @GeneralPet
      @GeneralPet 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      what do you mean? the carbon with the water have more molecule mass which means more volume. I think that it is because of the pressure that the oxygen and hydrogen build when they are released and heated because of this exothermic reaction. Plus we have the "oxidation" of hydrogen caused by the heat from the reaction releasing more heat. Now that we have H2O the heat will turn into pressure making is more effective to see. Still not sure though.

    • @frostbyt1134
      @frostbyt1134 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Petros Oratiou
      If the hydrogen was "oxidized" it would have burned rather than have been released in it's gaseous state. And yes, my first explanation was wrong. Carbon is actually more dense than sugar, thus sugar will occupy more volume per gram than carbon. The growing, as you said, is a result of the expanding hydrogen, oxygen, and water gases which makes the carbon much more porous and therefor less dense than the sugar (by how much I don't know, but one could find out by finding the volume of the gases produced).

    • @GeneralPet
      @GeneralPet 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrFrostyOFFICIAL Yes but as you can see the word oxidized was in quotes "..." I just didn't want to use the word "react" again. But nvm

    • @frostbyt1134
      @frostbyt1134 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Petros Oratiou
      Right, but oxidation implies a very specific type of reaction. Dehydration would be the more appropriate term as in this reaction we are removing hydrogen (and oxygen as well) from the sugar molecules.

    I'm going to assume powdered sugar is made of sucrose like normal table sugar.
    Sulfuric Acid is a strong proton donor, and protons oxidize the disacharide sucrose into essentially carbon. Each of the hydroxyl groups on the carbons are protonated and turn into water. and you are left with carbon.

    Sugar is made up of three elements, Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen and their bond compresses the substance. As these react with conc. H2SO4 the acid eats up all the Hydrogen and Oxygen leaving only the carbon inside. Now you can see how much carbon is present even in a little amount of sugar.
