  • In this video I am performing a relative compression test on a 2002 GMC Envoy with a 4.2 liter inline 6 cylinder engine.
    The vehicle was brought to me because it was misfiring and had a check engine light on. I scanned the computer for codes and got a P0305 cylinder 5 misfire.

    Any idea how the 1008 compares to the Hantek DSO3064?
    Any idea what the difference is between the 1008a vs 1008b vs 1008c ?
    Is it possible to compare ignition waveform vs cylinder position (TDC) to confirm proper timing.
    Thanks for the videos!

    • @Enrique_Osorio

      +Chris Canty I do not think it will be hard to learn on nearly any scope. It is more about what you plan om doing with the scope and how much time you want to practice with it.

    what did you disable stopping it from starting so you can get you reading

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Since I was filming alone, I removed the Fuel Pump Relay. If you do this you will also need to start the engine one more time since there will still be residual gasoline in the fuel lines. Once the engine only turns over but does not start you will be ready to perform this test. I would like to add that in many modern vehicles, including this GMC, if you turn the key to the ON position without trying to start the vehicle, depress the accelerator pedal completely and hold the pedal down, and then try to start the engine, the computer goes in to Clear Flood Mode. What happens is that the computer will temporarily disable the fuel injectors as well as the fuel pump so the engine will not start. When I perform relative compression tests, this is what I usually do.
      Thank you for your question, and thanks for watching!!

    so to do a relative compression test i cant do it with the cc-65? i need the cc-650?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Alejandro Amaro You will need the CC-650. Since the maximum I have been able to read on the CC-65 is 150 amps and most starters can pull over 200 amps you will need the CC-650. Additionally the CC-65 has a very small clamp which will not encircle a battery cable. The CC-650's jaws can comfortably clamp several thick conductors.

    When testing spark plug current, is it true that you need an attenuator it will damage your oscilloscope? Maybe upload a video where it is being used properly on spark current draw?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe you mean ignition coil primary CURRENT draw. When measuring current it is typically done with a Current Clamp or "Amp Clamp" and no attenuator is needed. When dealing with ignition coil primary control VOLTAGE, the inductive spikes can be as high as 400 volts and in that case an attenuator is mandatory.

    hi,thanks for this, but can i use the cc-65 for relative compression test ???

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately not. Even the smallest engines draw at least 160 Amps during start up through their starter motor. The CC-65 is not accurate at those levels. The CC-65 will not allow a wire thicker than 1 cm to be clamped and most battery wires are thicker than that with their insulation. A CC-650 is necessary for relative compression tests. Thank you for your question and thanks for watching!!

      I just watched a Scanner Danner video and he used the 65 amp probe but set it on the 2v scale instead. Unfortunately he was using a Snap-on Verus scanner and I'm not sure if it will work on the Hantek, my scope is still on the way from China. @taboracho621 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would the Hantek have to use the same brand of amp clamp you are using here or would it work with a different brand of amp clamp? I see the clamp costs as much as the scope.

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tabo Racho Any amp clamp that outputs a voltage that corresponds to the amperage running through the clamp will work. If the conversion from Amps to milliVolts is different than the Hantek's then you are going to have to do the conversions yourself.
      As an example, the Hantek CC-650 amp clamp on the high setting will convert every amp flowing through it to 1 millivolt. So if I clamp a wire that has 10 Amps running through it the clamp outputs to the scope 10 millivolts. If I select on the scope that I am using the CC-650 in high amperage mode, it does the conversions for me. An amp clamp that uses different settings will give erroneous numbers but if you know what the conversions are you can make it work.

      @Enrique_Osorio  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Da Beginner Sorry about the late reply. You can not zoom in with this scope. All you can do is change the time base during a live reading and pause the waveform. From there you can zoom, but it is pointless to do so. All that happens is the pixels get bigger but you do not get any more clarity. The pico, however does allow you to zoom in with incredible detail.

    Have you used the dso6074BE ? How would it compare to this scope as well as the pico? I only do this as a hobby im not sure 3k (pico) is a good buy for a 4 channel scope. $300(Hantech dso6074BE) is doable but i guess it depends on how much better it would be over this $80(Hantech 1008) dollar scope?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are just going to be using the scope for hobby purposes then the Hantek 1008 might be the best bet. I have never used the DSO6074BE so I can not say with any certainty how good it could be but I would expect it to perform well. The Hantek 1008 is far from perfect but I will use the 1008 while working with electronics on my desk or under the hood of my car. There is definitely a learning curve with this scope since it is not as user friendly as it could be but it does work.
      If you plan on working with signals exceeding 250kHz then you will absolutely need something like the DSO6074BE. The Hantek 1008 can not handle any signals that are going that fast. In fact when I am testing signals that exceed 1 mHz which is common I have to use my PicoScope.

    Hey bro, awesome videos. Very informative. Was wanting to purchase a scope. How long have you had the hantek 1008a and any problems with it? for 90 bucks on ebay, it seems like a good deal.
    Is there lag time on the scope itself?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Justin Jose. I have had the scope for about 4 years. I used to have problems with the program crashing but that was solved with a more powerful computer. I have "overvoltaged" it several times by accident. I have given it 400 volt spikes and it came back for more. This scope has worked out for me and taught me a lot about automotive and electronics in general. I think it is a good buy if one has the funds and the time to learn and try to work with it.

    ..quiero preguntarle si conoce alguna biblioteca o base de datos en donde aparezca los #s de dientes para CKP ejemplo (60-2) GM. pues cuando abro *CrankWheelPulser*, me pide esa info....además, cuando quiero que las dos señales sean Sync, me pide Cam Trigger ! ...o como sincronizar señales CKP+CMP con el osciloscopio 1008 a fin de darle inicio a ECU al blanquearla?

      No conzco un libro que tiene eas informaccion. Yo usaba iatn.net para esa informaccion cuando yo trabaje en autos.
      No se de su problema espesifica de el "CrankwheelPulser", pero para poder ver las senales de el CKP y CMP, pon el terminal positive del oscilloscopio en la guia de unos de los sensores y el otro a tierra. Es igual con el otro sensor. Usa los triggers y el time/div para ajustar las ondas hasta que la figura en al pantalla se parece bien.

      The signals themselves i acquired from iatn.net. Users post CKP+CMP signals that they took from known good vehicles. It is a pay service. Unfortunately that is the only source I know of. If you have access to AllData or something similar there may be more information there but in my experience it is limited on example waveforms

    I've seen a Pico actually give specific numbers for a relative compression test, I guess taking the highest voltage as the baseline and then comparing the other cylinders to that then giving percentages for each cylinder. I'm guess the Hantek doesn't do that, but could you measure each peak and do the calcs by hand or would that be really tedious?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could absolutely do the calculations by hand. It would be a simple fraction. If you are using the highest peak as your baseline then you use that current measurement as you denominator and the other values as the numerator. For example if you had a 4 cylinder motor and the peaks were at 135 Amps, 110 Amps, 140 Amps and 132 Amps then you would have 140 be your baseline. The percentages would read as follows 135/140 = 96% , 110/140 = 79% , 140/140 = 100% , 132/140 = 94%. This is not the most accurate test but it does tell you that they cylinder at 79% needs the most attention. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

    • @sailorbob74133
      @sailorbob74133 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it easy to get the number measurements from the Hantek?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, use the cursor feature. On the menu at the top "Cursor" should be fifth from the left. Make sure to select the correct source, which means selecting the channel that you are trying to measure. The source can be selected in the Cursor menu. Next select the Horizontal Cursor in "Type" submenu of the Cursor menu. Now click on the screen somewhere, hold down the mouse button and drag to somewhere else on the screen. When you release the mouse button you will see two horizontal lines appear and some measurements at the bottom of the screen. This will tell you the difference in voltage or amperage between the two lines. If you set one of the lines to the zero mark of the channel that you are measuring and the other to the peak of one of the "bumps" in the waveform you will see the amperage of that particular peak. Do that for the subsequent peaks and you will have the measurements for all of the cylinders that you tested. Look at the following screenshot.
      imgur.com/a/t2Xd1
      This is a relative compression test that I did on a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4cyl. All of the white numbers and lines in the picture I added in a photo editor after I took the screen shot. The large numbers are the cylinder numbers the small numbers with psi next to them are the measurements I made with a real compression tester gauge. The difference in current on the left shows the difference in current between the highest peak and the lowest peak. You can see the measured number at the bottom of the screen as well. This shows that with this engine and with this starter a 20 amp difference corresponds to a 40 psi difference in pressure. I am not sure why I put in 21.7A difference when the scope clearly shows a 21.3A difference. I made this graphic years ago.
      I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and thank you for your comments and questions.

    • @sailorbob74133
      @sailorbob74133 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great! I saw a useful technique on Shrodinger's Box channel for getting actual PSI from the amperage readings. Basically take a traditional PSI reading on a single cylinder, then do a relative test. Divide the PSI by amps for the single cylinder measured to get PSI per Amp, then to get the PSI for the other cylinders just multiply each amp reading by the PSI/Amp number and you'll have the PSI for all the read of the cylinders.

    Hey I have a quick question about the scope. Does the program Have a button to clean up or filter the waveform so that it looks better when performing the relative compression test?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alejandro Bejarano It does not. That is called a low pass filter. A lot of scopes have that function due to the fact that there can be a lot of noise that can be picked up in the very high frequency range. Usually that noise is on the order of 20 MHz or higher. The low pass filter gets rid of any signal that is above that frequency. The Hantek does not need that because the fastest signal it can capture is a 2 MHz signal. This means any waveform it captures is already "filtered" although it really is not. Hope that makes sense.

    • @gonzalohernandez88
      @gonzalohernandez88 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did a lowpass pasive filter to clean the relative compression waveform, is not perfect but is clearer I can get.

    • @sailorbob74133
      @sailorbob74133 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you do a low pass filter on this scope? I'm working with a car that has allot of ignition system noise in the sensor signals and I'd love to filter it out so I could get clearer waveforms.

    • @sailorbob74133
      @sailorbob74133 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What about filtering out ignition system noise? All the sensors on my Mazda 626 ( other than the crank sensor ) get interference from the ignition system and it makes the signals really ugly and hard to tell if there is a problem with the signals or if it's just noise.

    Nice Video, but dude, PLEASE !! After a Relative compression test, I hope you did both "WET" and "DRY" compression tests on cylinder 5. I've always hated when there would be a "Needs An Engine" diagnostic outcome on a vehicle that simply needed the head pulled and a valve job done. It's waay cheaper , but , then again, most shops, that I have worked for, go for the quick buck. Still a nice video though. :)

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did not bother with further testing. Compression was exactly zero and the customer was not interested in any repairs. Basically he was hoping it was an ignition coil or a spark plug. Anything over $200 would have been out of the question. He got rid of the truck.

    • @RealDynamite
      @RealDynamite 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, ok. I wish that more customers would have a "Worst Case Scenario" type of outlook, rather than a "Hopefully It's Nothing" kind of outlook. That way, when they bring their vehicle in, they are already prepared to pay $2,000 , even if it only turns out to be a $20 problem. Nothing more aggravating than a customer that expects you to perform a Million Dollar Miracle on his Five Dollar Budget. ;)

      Is the Hantek as good as Pico or better to go with Pico? With Hantek you can get way more cables and clamps with the 4 channel kit, practically everything for 600 bucks which is about 1/4 the cost of Pico. Pico may be good but even a fool knows they are way over priced. Does the Pico offer a black screen?

    Oh this scope if you measured a digital air mass meter, then brought up the frequency measurement. is there a way of showing that frequency as a graph form??
    Thanks

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I'm sorry but there is no way of graphing frequency like you can with the Pico or Snap On scopes. You can view frequency as a live reading like you can do with a multimeter with a frequency meter but that is it.

      Enrique Osorio thanks for reply. what if in the math function and use fft in the right hand box? what does this do. i only have the demo mode as havent bought the scope yet, just interested . thanks

      Alex Cotton I am not sure, since I only use the math function for testing electronic throttle bodies sensors. If you want a detailed explanation on how I use it let me know. I do not have the scope with me right now since I do not work on weekends but I will investigate your question when I get back to work on Monday.

    Do you know to filter the waveform in order to see it clearer?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gonzalo Hernandez I wish that were the case but unfortunately that is not an option on this scope. The only way to minimize noise is to put your own external low pass filter. I have not experimented with that but I would like to try at some time. Thanks for the comment!

      Where I can to buy that low pass filter?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gonzalo Hernandez I have never used one with an input on an oscilloscope, although I would like to try at some point in the future. I do not know where you can buy one that will meet the specifications you will require to effectively filter a signal that you will be acquiring but I do know of a video that will help you build one.

      I love this guys channel and as a tip that may help, my PicoScope has the low pass filter option built in and it is set by default to 1 kHz. After you watch the video that will make more sense. Hope that helps!

      I haven't tried it but they use that on the little dso handheld scopes. debating what scope to get myself trying to get into more advanced diagnostics. Was thinking about an Autel MP408 until I saw these videos lol.

    Dont you need to hook up to the number 1 injector, so you know where to start your firing order count?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Think about the way a 4 cycle engine works. The fuel injector which in this engine is just on the inside of the intake valve needs to fire when the valve is still open. That happens about 180° of crankshaft rotation before the peak of pressure on the cylinder. Using the fuel injector as a synchronizer for a relative compression test is not a good idea. A better way is to use the signal for the ignition coil. I did not do that in this video because I wanted to show how you can use this test simply to identify that one of the cylinder had low compression without the added complication of synchronizing it to a cylinder and using the firing order to figure out each one. If you would like a detailed step by step instruction on how to do this let new know and I will be happy to provide it.

      Enrique Osorio
      I know how to do it. I do it with my Picoscope I always use a coil or injector (what ever is easiest to get to) Then if the firing order is 1-2-3-4, and I am on the number 3 coil, I know to start my count from there. Hope that makes sense.

    is this scope capable of recording? if yes, for how long?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is capable of recording but I have not attempted to do it. I saw someone else do it in another video. As you can see in my video you can do a single shot with a trigger but that is as much as I have done. If i can find that other video I will let you know or perhaps post my own video showing the recording function.

    Hi,
    You pointed out that one of the peaks was the # 1 cylinder and so on, how did you identify that particular one to be #1?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question!! Thank you for asking that, I am sure other people were confused about that part too.
      I did not mean that it was the number one cylinder, rather since this is a 6 cylinder engine there will be six current spikes for every 2 revolutions of the motor. For this reason if you see a depression where there is supposed to be a current spike and that depression has 5 spikes between it you can be sure that there is one cylinder with low compression. When I started counting I started from an arbitrary position but for the purposes of this test I did not need to know which cylinder had low compression just that one of the cylinders had low compression. From then on I completed other tests to verify my diagnosis.
      If you use a second channel to monitor the ignition coil firing of one of the cylinders you can actually line up the current spikes with the ignition coil firing and by using the firing order you can identify which cylinder has low compression but I did not do that in this test.

      Hey thanks for your reply, i know you weren't using that specific series but I was hoping you could give some info on the one you were using since its the same manufacturer...thanks again bro, we will keep in touch.

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bannie Thompson Oh, I understand now. The Hantek that I use is great for seeing and analyzing signals that you have on he screen at that moment. In automotive applications hat is not always useful since sometimes you are looking for glitches that happen outside of the current waveform you are looking at. That is why I switched to the Pico for my automotive diagnostics. At home where I normally work with small circuits and breadboards, the Hantek is perfect. I am usually looking at frequency signals from square wave generators and the like and I use the Hantek for that purpose. This is not to say that my Hantek can not be used for automotive applications it just is not ideal.
      The software is pretty good. It is quite intuitive, I would say more so than the Pico but that maybe because I am still getting used to the Pico. I recommend you download the software for the scope you would like to get and try it out. The price of the scope is reasonable for the capabilities it claims. I would not hesitate to buy.

    So for anyone using this tool or thinking of purchasing this tool and you are on a newer system like mine (win 8.1) you will find that it will not install the driver correctly as it is not signed from Hantek. They will not respond to any requests for help. What you have to do is force feed the driver into win via the advanced startup menu. revryl.com/2013/08/06/install-unsigned-drivers/ has a good walkthrough. I did it once and it didn't take and had to go through the steps again but you should end up with a red box telling you it is unsigned and asking if you want to go ahead by the end of it all. If you tell it yes it WILL install the driver. This is the reason it will only have Chinese menus and the English option is greyed out. It does not matter if you installed the CD or website software. 1.0.10 I believe is the latest version. If you follow these steps you will save yourself a lot of trouble and frustration. Hope it is okay to leave this here sorry for taking up the space. I like the product now that I can actually use it.

    That is the worst cranking sound I've ever heard for just having compression issues. Jeez. It sounds like a blown steam engine.

  • @wilkiechad
    @wilkiechad 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just because there is little compression resistance in one of the cylinders, you say the engine is bad? Shenanigans..... It just means there is low compression. There are many things that can cause low compression. Anyway, I also don't care for all the noise in the waveform. Pico is better.

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad Wilkie I agree with you 100% the engine is not complete trash but economically it will be cheaper for this customer to pay us to remove and replace this engine then to pay us to rebuild it. There is a lot of noise in this signal and I did get a Pico. Check out my latest video.

    That is most pitiful scope I have ever seen what a pile of junk. The ripple is caused by poor performing electronics inside the scope. I would not trust this thing to check the lid of my garbage can. I figured I try this and see how I like it. POOR POOR POOR
    Do yourself's a favor and get the PICO or a used vantage pro. I compared all of them side by side with the PICO clearly coming out on top.
