    Thanks for responding so fast Enrique, I know a lot of professional technicians that can’t even turn on a scope, let alone use one for automotive use. I love the fact you don’t need very expensive equipment to diagnose vehicles in a professional manner. I really appreciate all you videos and I think I’m going to get it anyway. You have inspired me. You are a true professional!!!

    Thanks for the informative video of Hantek. You gave a great and. thorough tutorial on performing the relative compression test. There is not a lot of info on the internet for it. Hey Enrique, I just wanted to thank you for all the great videos. I’ve been using my 2 channel scope on my Snap On Modus for a couple years now. I’m really Intrested in the Hantek 1008C. It’s hard to believe that such a cheap scope does a good job? Do you think an older lap top will work ok with the Hantek program? Thanks again!! Wish I could hang with you and diagnose some cars!!

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unfortunately not. The Hantek 1008 is not a professional grade scope. If you have been using the Modus, stick with the modus. The snap on tool scope is orders of magnitude greater than the Hantek. The Hantek is only for hobbyists or masochistic mechanics.
      If you really want to use the Hantek 1008 I recommend a PC that has a 3rd gen Intel i3 or better with at least 4GB of ram running Windows 10

      Not a problem Javier. I assumed you already own a Hantek but it looks like you are still shopping around. In that case I would recommend a low end Picoscope rather than a Hantek. The Hantek is cheaper but the Hantek software is somewhat frustrating to work with. Here is a good option.
      www.picotech.com/oscilloscope/2000/picoscope-2000-overview
      The PicoScope I linked only has two channels but it is a higher quality product than the Hantek and the software is much more user friendly. It is $150. If you need something more capable simply select the options that you need. For hobby automotive use you will do fine with the PicoScope 2204A. If you really want more channels the next step up is the PicoScope 2405A with 4 channels which is $450.
      As for the probes, if you need something high quality try these in the link below. They are High quality and reasonably priced. I have ones similar to these.
      www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/digilent,-inc./460-004/1286-1075-ND/4840870?Test%20Leads%20-%20Oscilloscope%20Probes&Shopping_Product_Test%20and%20Measurement&Test%20Leads%20-%20Oscilloscope%20Probes&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6575BRCQARIsAMp-ksPj-EQB-BQ46h-D-sCjq8M_OoIOY5a09bit8BCZyxSQMRIPgzlZAfoaAi_yEALw_wcB
      For the current clamps, here is what I have.
      www.ebay.com/itm/Hantek-CC-65-Oscilloscope-Multimeter-AC-DC-Current-Clamp-Meter-65A-20KHz-for-Car/223094659989?epid=22004147278&hash=item33f17a5b95:g:4ggAAOSwQqJbmy80
      www.ebay.com/itm/Hantek-CC-650-AC-DC-Current-Clamp-Meter-Multimeter-w-Oscilloscope-BNC-Connector/223091295346?epid=2254344469&hash=item33f1470472:g:AZ4AAOSwNchaLFeG
      www.ebay.com/itm/Pico-TA167-BNC-2000A-200A-AC-DC-Current-Clamp/363035996106?epid=1864984155&hash=item5486a1afca:g:q1MAAOSwZmpe--MD
      www.ebay.com/itm/PICO-TECHNOLOGY-PicoScope-60-A-AC-DC-current-clamp-4mm-connector/254668860716?epid=4039410984&hash=item3b4b726d2c:g:lUEAAOSw2kZfIMnj
      I have those four current clamps linked above and they work in every situation I have needed them for. If you want something that just works with no fancy extras get the Hantek clamps, otherwise get the Pico Clamps.
      Other alternative high quality current clamps are:
      www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/b-k-precision/CP-3/CP3-ND/227495
      www.amazon.com/TPI-A254-Current-Adapter-Megaohms/dp/B0095XC06U
      The TPI current clamp sold by Amazon is very expensive but is great for very low current applications.
      Other options are buying something like a current sensor and using the voltage output of the current sensor to use with your scope. You will need to apply your own 5 volt supply if you want to go this route. The current sensors are very cheap ($5-$20) but you need to know what you are doing when using this option. Here is a link to an example of a current sensor.
      www.ebay.com/itm/ACS712-Current-Sensor-Module-with-5A-20A-30A-analogue-sensing-range-for-Arduino/391791347945?hash=item5b389588e9:g:ItwAAOSwB8Nd0Pd8:sc:USPSFirstClass!93420!US!-1
      The idea with using the current sensor is that you would break the circuit you are trying to measure, route the current through the sensor board, and use the voltage output of the sensor with your oscilloscope to view the current waveform.
      I hope I answered your questions. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Unfortunately the hardware does not allow for good recordings. There is a record feature but it is glitchy and not useful. This is a VERY basic scope that is only to be purchased if you are unsure if an oscilloscope is the right tool to use. It is a stepping stone tool that is for hobbyist who are not looking for serious equipment.

    Thanks for the education! I have seen all your videos about Hantek. I´m going to bye one myself but I haven´t decided the model yet. 1008C and 6074BE is the alternatives I´m looking for now. What´s your opinion with your experience?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It depends on your needs. If you need to be able to analyze fast signals and do not need more than two channels then the 6074BE is the way to go. If you just want something that works and you are not too interested in getting too "hardcore" into waveform analysis the 1008 will serve you well.
      That being said, there are dozens of scopes and scope types out there. I would say to first asses your needs and make a determination from that. If you are unsure what your needs are do some research about oscilloscope functions and that may lead you in the right direction.
      Thank you so much for watching my videos. It still amazes me everyday that anyone would voluntarily hear me talk. It amazes me even more that after hearing an explanation of mine, that they would come back for more. Let me know if you have any more questions and I will be glad to try to answer them.
      All the best,
      Enrique

    • @janmattsson2334
      @janmattsson2334 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Enrique_Osorio Thank´s for your answer! :)
      It isn´t easy to tell you my need. Honestly I´m not shore there is any. I have been living almost all my life without any scope, and it has gone quite well. But one of my biggest interests is cars and other vehicles, and I enjoy to maintain them. It´s also nice to push my knowledge forward.
      I think about 80% of my usage will be related to vehicles and the other 20% will be general use.
      6074BE seems to have some more performance and memory and it has 4 channels (not 2), but the price is a little higher.
      Another question: Is there any function or performance that you have been missing on your 1008?
      Thanks again!
      Jan M

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right, I did not realize that it was a 4 channel scope. In that case the 6074BE might be the better choice. It is twice the price of the 1008 but you have more functionality. The main problem of the Hantek 1008 is the speed. It can not look at high frequency signals. For automotive use, that is not a problem but if you want to learn about other electronics you might want to look at a more capable scope.
      I would like to add that I have rarely needed more than 4 channels and I usually only use 2 channels. Just something I wanted to add.

    Enrique, 2 more questions: 1. I googled for the voltage proves and found them... but there are too many to chose e.g. PP-90 (80MHz), PP-150 (100MHz) so, which one should I get? 2. On your earlier videos you used a Hantek current clamp and now you are using a CC-650, is one better than the other? Thanks, again!

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The PP150 would be better since it has a higher bandwidth of 100 MHz. Unfortunately the Hantek will not be able to read a 100 MHz signal so the probe is overkill. If you only ever plan to use the Hantek as your scope buy the cheaper probe.
      As for the current clamp if you can only buy one clamp I would suggest buying the higher current clamp since there are tricks that you can use to make them more accurate for lower currents. The reality is when buying a current clamp you need to buy one for your needs. A single current clamp will NOT work in all situations. I have a Low current clamp that works from 1 Amp to about 60 Amps. I also have a medium current clamp which works from 10 to 600 Amps. I have a high current clamp that works from 50 Amps to 2000 Amps. The clamps I have are for different ranges and they overlap. When using a current clamp you want to choose one that the currents you will be measuring are somewhere in the middle of that clamps rating. There is no one clamp for everything.

    Enrique, another question: is it posible to do a compression test by means of voltage drop?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there are two ways, unfortunately the Hantek 1008 is not really capable of either way. The method involves watching the voltage drop across the positive of the battery and the positive input of the starter motor. If that is inaccessible then you can simply monitor the battery voltage. Then you must set your scope to AC coupling. Unfortunately the Hantek 1008 does not have that feature. Lastly you crank the engine and monitor the the voltage fluctuations as the motor cranks. Since the scope is in AC coupling any DC signal is blocked and you only see the fluctuations.
      If you really want to try to do this with the Hantek 1008 you are going to need some type of high pass filter. Linked below I show a 10 nF capacitor which if placed in SERIES with your probes will filter out frequencies below 10HZ. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. I also linked some other videos that may be helpful.

    I'm looking to get my first scope for automotive diagnostics as a hobby and to help family and friends. Do you recommend the Hantek 1008c or should I go another route?
    Also, please consider setting up an Amazon "store" with the gear you use so that when I buy it you get a little $ for all the work you put into these videos.

      As a hobby ABSOLUTELY if you are OK with a lot of drawbacks. I used the Hantek 1008 for years professionally until I purchased my PicoScope. In those years I endured a lot of wasted time just trying to figure out exactly how the Hantek 1008 and its software like to be treated. Unfortunately the Hantek 1008 can be quite glitchy. If your patience wears out quickly or its essential that the product works every time you need it to, I DO NOT recommend the Hantek. In my opinion even a used Picoscope would be worth paying the extra money for.

    • @Enrique_Osorio

      The first link is an eBay link for a base Pico. The second link is for the specs on Pico's website. This is NOT an automotive based scope so the software will not be optimized toward automotive use. With a little research and patience you will be able to use this Pico for nearly anything you need on a car. You will need to purchase additional probes for automotive use like a current clamp and attenuators.

      @@Enrique_Osorio what would you consider the top 3-5 drawbacks to be?

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Crashes when it received voltage spikes for an extended period of time. 10 seconds
      The pause feature does not store any information greater than the current screen at the current t time base.
      The sample rate is low so you barely get a good wavedorm with high frequency signals like CAN bus lines.
      The presets for automotive use are not helpful at all.
      The absolute voltage level accuracy is probably within 5% when using attenuators, which is fine if you just need the shape of the waveform and not exact voltage levels.
      There is no way to custom add functions for an accessory. For example there are options to choose Hantek current clamps as an input but if the current clamps you have uses a different ration of mA per Volt, you are going to have to keep the conversion formula in your head. It's not too bad of a drawback but it is annoying.
      There is NO AC coupling, only DC.
      The XY mode is OK but nothing spectacular.
      The scope itself is very susceptible to noise so keep it away from spark plugs wires and ignition coils. I use extra long leads.
      That's all off the top of my head. Any more questions, let me know.

    • @Enrique_Osorio

      It is an OK scope. I like to think of the Hantek 1008 as a scope to buy if you are unsure if a scope is a tool that you would benefit from. There are a lot of drawbacks to using the Hantek 1008 but it has enough functionality to perform some tasks. As for the 1st look sensor, I have never personally used it but from the information I have found online the frequency output of a 1st look sensor is not very high therefore I believe it can be used successfully with the Hanek 1008. Excellent question!! The 2nd and 3rd waveforms had the amp clamp on the cable that went to the starter motor. That will generally get you a cleaner waveform. Additionally the Mazda that the first waveform was taken from has an electronic cam phaser on the intake cam which can vary the pressure in the cylinder during cranking resulting in a smaller difference between maximum and minimum current drawn from the starter. Thank you for your insightful question, and thanks for watching!!

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TLDR: Hantek 1008c is good enough but not the best. Decide on your needs before buying.
      I recommend the Hantek 1008 for people who are hobbyist or for people who do not know if an oscilloscope is the right tool for them. The Hantek 1008c is fast enough for most of the signals you would see in a car but it does not mean it is the best tool for the job. I used the Hantek for years professionally as a mechanic and upgraded to the PicoScope when the Hantek simply did not cut it. The Hantek is glitchy, sometimes will not display a signal properly the first time and it takes a while to get used to its quirks. The PicoScope, a scope that costs 10x the Hantek, is super fast, with great software and so many functions. Bottom line, buy the Hantek of you want something to play with or buy something more capable if this is going to be part of your livelihood.
      Thank you so much for your question and thank you for watching my videos. Any other comments or questions you may have simply give my comment a thumbs up so I know to look for your comment. Thank you again and hope to hear from you again soon.

      If your major need is to stay at a low cost, then the Hantek 1008 is the way to go. The cost is low and for the price you get good functionality.

    • @Enrique_Osorio
      @Enrique_Osorio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ignition coil on this car has 4 wires. One wire is 12V (Power), another is 0V (Ground), another is a sensing signal, and the last is the control signal. The control signal is distinct because it is a 5V rectangular pulse. Before the video I looked at a wiring diagram in the repair manual to see which wire was which. I did not go into too much detail because this is not a universal truth for all cars. There are many different ignition systems out there. Since this video was mainly about relative compression I left out the part about choosing the right wire.
