    There is some skill to using and adjusting sickle mowers. I've seen people on TH-cam plug em up and just have a terrible time but they don't know how to adjust them or mow with them. They aren't a lawn mower, you can't just jump on and go. It was nice to watch someone who knows how to use it. Nice video Ross

      Thanks! Yes, many people don’t really understand that it is essentially a giant pair of scissors. If your two scissor halves don’t lineup you’re not gonna cut very well

    I never got to run the sickle bar I was only able to throw bales and stack on trucks and in barns. But it was good money when you were out of school and the fun with the gang made it worth it.

    Now that y have the 1365 up and running it would be a good job for it thanks for the videos

      It definitely would handle that mower OK! But for what I use it for mowing ditches I like being a higher on the four digit tractor.

    Really enjoyed this video. My grandfather had an old Ford sicklebar mower he cut hay with in the late 70's. Pitman rod was cracked on it when he got it. Someone "patched" it with electrical tape if you can believe that. Eventually broke and he replaced it with a piece of hickory lumber cut off his property. Word to the wise ....watch the dog when using those mowers. Lots of pups have lost legs accidentally walking into a running blade.

      Yep, I’ve seen lots of interesting repairs over the years. People will do whatever it takes to get by. And yes, I know what you mean about the dogs. My dog likes to follow me everywhere I go and I have to stop lots of times because he standing right in front of where I’m cutting.

    Back in the day as a teenager I worked for a neighbor and cut a lot of hay with a Ferguson with an 8 foot sickle bar. 1951/52. Hills of Tennessee.

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those were the days! I bet that could be a trick sometimes on those hills with no live PTO!

    • @tomharrington1393
      @tomharrington1393 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am sure the Ferguson had a PTO. All I remember is the pitman arm. I didn’t do any maintenance at all. The owner did all of that. I headed to the barn when something broke.

    very cool! makes me want to put the belly mounted sickle bar back on my WD Allis Chalmers.

      I always thought mid mounted mowers would have been the Cadillac but I guess guys wanted the easiness of hooking up more than the comfort while mowing!

    • @oilfarmer706
      @oilfarmer706 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rosstheoliverman it is very nice to not have to keep looking behind you. Taking the cutter bar off isn't hard but the frame can be a pain. I always liked raking with the wd because it's narrow front but with the mower frame still mounted hay tends to ball up under it and make a mess so I opted to take it off.

      I think mounted sickle mowers are much better than the pull type ones!

    Good video!
    We never had a 3 point sickle mower, just an Oliver 22B drawbar mount that Grandpa bought new in the '50s. It's still in the family.
    Around here, most of the Oliver mowers are the 22's, 82's, and 415 trail type.
    That Johnson is a slick tool. We always used a chisel to shear the rivet heads off, a file to finish if needed, punch them out, then used a screw rivet press to head the new rivets.
    I keep seeing an 1800A in some of your photos in the videos. Are you intending on doing an equipment tour video at some point?
    Thanks for taking the time to make your videos!

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Eventually I think I will do an equipment tour. Right now life is kind of hectic so video making has been eratic. The 1800 A usually runs the auger in the fall but at the end of haying the steering started leaking badly so I need to fix that before using it again. I’ll try to make a video about it soon.

    Great video! I have a mower like this or very similar. I will reference this video when I get at that project. I have an older pull type Oliver sickle mower too that needs blades but they are a smaller size. May need to order them because I didn't find that size in the farm stores.

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah most of the farm stores don’t carry much sickle mower stuff anymore. But every so often you can find one that does.

    Hi
    Does anyone have experience replacing the lift cable? Trying to remove the broken cable from the bottom of the spring seems to be an issue.
    Maybe just need heat on the threaded rod…
    Thank you for any assistance!
