The sickle bar mower is a very unique attachment for the small tractors.
I bet you don't see many at the shows you attend. Thanks and take care
Thanks 👍 They are not common but not the most rare attachment for a garden tractor over here but by chance or luck we have two of them. The other one needs lots of work. Take care
Good Evening Joseph 👍😇👌I remember that show ( time go sooo fast !!!! ) That is pretty good fixe and adjustment 😇👍 Striped bolts is not fun at all 😇😇👍👍OUTSTANDING FIELD DEMO 👍😇👌Keep warm and Dry 👌😇👍Cheers 🍻
Thanks 👍 It is frustrating trying to buy UNC/UNF fixings over here. A simple striped bolt turns into a major issue. It is a cool attachment to use. Take care
Great video Joseph! It is nice to have a simple (or lets say less troublesome) fix every now and then! Well done and just love how a sickle bar mower cuts! Take care!
Thanks 👍 It is not often we get a straight forward repair on our old equipment. It is a very cool attachment and we hope to use it more next year. Take care
Nice to have a repair job that's easy every now and then. Dad did a heck of a job trimming with it. Have a good week and I hope you get your parts soon GTB! See ya!
Thanks 👍 Non metric fixings are very hard to get over here so it was great we had everything in stock and it is not often things go easy on our old equipment. Take care and I hope you have a good week too
Magnificent Joseph, that hedge cutting setting is a great addition apart from mowing grass
Thanks 👍 It is a very cool attachment but you have to be very careful using it. Take care
That's a very handy implement, guessing it gets a lot of use..
Good one Joseph...
ATB....Cheers....
Thanks 👍 It is a great attachment for long grass. We have not used it much but we would like to put it to more use next year. Take care
Glad the repair went well. Even put the sickle (and the cameraman) to work in the end 👍
Thanks 👍 It is an interesting attachment but no way was I going to try using it in the upright position :-) Take care
It turned out to be a simple fix 👍🏻. I'm surprised a sickle bar was available for a garden tractor back then. Have a great week Joseph 👍🏻🙋🏼♂
Thanks 👍 Non metric fixings are not easy to get over here so it was great we had everything we needed in stock. It is not often we have a simple fix on our older equipment. You could get a sickle bar mower for most garden tractors of the 1960-80's but they were not a common attachment. Take care and I hope you have a good week too
How's she goin'? This repair worked out well. It's nice when the repair is easy and everything comes apart and goes together the way it's supposed to!! That sickle bar mower is some nice attachment. I wish I had one for my GC2300!! Thanks for the video. It was nice to see you mowing and see your dad trimming the hedge!! Take care!!
It is not often that things go this well. Imperial fixings (I think you call them standard) are so hard to find over here and it was great we had everything we needed in stock. It is a cool attachment and great to use. Take care
Hello Joseph,
A really nice repair job, I'm sure it's nice when you get an easy one to do.
Take care.
Paul,,
Thanks. It is not often things work out like this and it was great that we had all the required imperial fixings in stock. Take care
Hello brother, I just seen your channel on open air adventure. Glad I stopped and subscribed. I like the show very much 😊
Thank you very much. I just checked out your channel and it looks great, I am surprised I have not seen your channel before. I have subscribed and will be following along. Take care Joseph
Excelent video Joseph! you have to be careful when cutting under bushes, it only takes one thick stem to bend your bar!!
Phil
Thanks. We should have covered the risk of thick stems in the video. The sickle bar has a break back feature and you can adjust the tension. When it finds something it can't cut or an obstacles the break back feature cuts in to release the drive and the bar folds back. It is simple but clever in the way it does it. Take care
Hey Joseph and dad. Fine job on the repairs. The sickle works well in the grass and hedge. I received your letter, thank you.
Kenny
Thanks, it is a cool attachment. The letter got to you very quickly. Take care
Do that happen to you often having to buy odd sizes from America. But it works great makes quick work, i can use something like that lol
Unfortunately it is getting harder to get UNC/UNF fixings over here and if you can get them they are expensive. Ideally we would like to find a good company to work with in America to make it easier. They are a cool attachment. Take care
Well, that repair was far too easy! 🙂The sickle bar is well built and high-quality. Thanks for sharing.
It is not often that repairs go this well especially when a number of different fixings are required. It is very difficult to get UNC/UNF fixings over here. It is a great attachment and you are right, it is great quality. Take care
Interesting demonstration, especially the vertical application on the hedgerow. You have a nice attachment for your tractor. I am a fan of the obsolete lawn tractors from the 1960's and 70's. They are very useful tools and cost friendly. I have never used a Haban mower but have one to install on a jd140. How did you obtain the parts list you referenced in this video?
Thanks. We have some great attachments for our tractors and I am sure they will all feature at some point. We have a big collection of garden tractors from the 60/70's and we think they are great tool. We found that you have to be very careful using these sickle bar mowers but they are a great too. I think they were made before health and safty was invented :-) We have parts list for most of our tractors and attachements and we downloaded many of them from forums such as "Garden Tractor Talk" and My Tractor Forum". Take care
Hey guys, I really like that sickle bar mower! I have only seen pictures of them. I don't think they were that popular over here. It really works well! The cameraman did a great job as well. Thanks for sharing this neat piece of equipment.
For some odd reason we do see a few over here and we have two, although the other one is not in good condition. It is a great attachement to use and we hope to use it more next year. Take care
that was an easy one to repair. there is a lot of vibration on that unit caused by that pitman arm going in and out. I bet you that that pulley is a recurring problem and like you said....Keeping an eye on it is a good idea....CHEERS
It is surprising how much they do vibrate, it is not an attachment you would want to use all day long. We do have another one which is in much worse condition and I am sure it does not vibrate as much, we will have to check that. Take care
I'd like to have a sickle bar for my sub-compact - great video - Enjoy the Journey - Cheers
Thanks. They are a cool attachment but they can be scary and you have to focus when you use it. They were a popular attachment but I am not sure if they are sold any more. Take care
Good evening Joseph.
In one of my earlier videos, there is a John Deere garden tractor that had a Sears sickle mower mounted to it. I think that it is shown in the thumbnail, if I remember correctly.
Hi Gary. They are a very cool attachment. Most of the garden tractor sickle bar mowers appear to have been made by Haban and some changes to brackets will make them fit another machine. Take care and I hope you have a great week
Great to have another project wrapped up and just in time before cold weather set's in! My slop on the side would be much easier to keep cut with a sickle bar, and this is a gem of a tractor. Merry Christmas from TX, and wishing all there a safe and Happy New Year as well, Bear
Thanks. We are looking forward to using this now that it is running. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope you get more workshop time in 2024, take care

Thanks you very much 👍
Hello Joseph , very nice fix on the sickle bar mower . I want one of those for my wheel horse . That thing is cool !!! 👍🏻
Thanks 👍 I have seen a Wheelhorse sickle bar mower and they do look good but we do not have one. Take care
you are right those cycle bars can be dangerous, one of the highway workers here cut two or three fingers off, he reached down to pick the bar up by hand, his fingers were in where the knives move and as he raised the bar it made the cycle move and just that quick he lost some fingers.
It is probably the most dangerous attachment we have. The situation you described can happy far too easily. Dad cut a finger just shapening the blade before we used it in the video. Take care
Not sure the lock washer is effective on a curved surface. The mower works great! Mine is a Sears model, and I probably won't use it till after taking it to a show or two mounted on the Roper 16T. Take care.
That is a good point about the lock washer, thanks. We will order some nylocks which I think we need anyway for the Bolens GT2000 we are working on. It is a cool attachment to use but I think it probably take a lot of practice to get the ground speed right for the material you are cutting and I am sure it did not help that our grass was wet when we made this video. Take care
Awesome sickle bar setup Joseph. It's always nice sometimes to have an easy repair 🔧👍
Thanks 👍 It is a very interesting attachment. It is not often you get an easy reapir on the older equipment we both work on either. Take care
Nice to have diagrams to look at. I have a length of round stock I use when hammering in
a pin or bolt that is close to an edge. There are a lot of bolts there.
Great tip, thanks. It is good that so many parts diagrams are available for our equipment, it does make things a lot easier especially when they detail the exact size of the fixings. Take care
great job guys, I was wondering if it worked in an upright position and it does.
Thanks. It works very well in the upright position but it is very scary and far too easy to make a mistake. Take care
Great video, enjoy watching thanks
Thanks 👍 It is a great attachment and fun to use. Take care
Really good video Joseph, i do you get your parts for the other project, the royal mail is ridiculous these days 😡
Thanks. The parts have now arrived from the US but the Royal Mail have now let use down on some UNC fixings we ordered from the UK and delievered them to the wrong address. I am not sure what it is like in your part of the country but here all the bearing and fixings companies closed the counter service during covid and have not reopened. As such we have to order everything online which is not good if you are in a hurry or want some expert help. Take care
Great repair Joseph. I’ve never had a sickle bar mower but always wanted one. Not a common attachment here. Looks to be 4’ ?
I believe that’s a common size for a garden tractor. Nice that it can cut in the upright position. Great for under the hedge and trees too. Will it cut downward into a ditch too ?
Great tool. Have a great day. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
Thanks. Spot on, it is a 48" cut. This model does not cut downwards but the model that should be on a tube frame Bolens which is the Haban model 405A does cut downwards. We also have one of these which will be a future project. They are a great attachment. Take care
@@GardenTractorBoy 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
Nice video, I had a Haban sickle mower for my 1886. I never mounted it . And sold it then . I regret that after watching. Good job. BTW my name is also Joseph.
Hello Joseph. Sickle bar mowers are not very common over here but the Haban mower for the Bolens large frame is super rare, we only know of one in the whole of the UK. The are an interesting attachment to use. Take care and thanks for watching and commenting
@@GardenTractorBoy I sold mine with the BOLENS 1886 for $1000.00 for all . I know that was cheap . But I still made money. I've been a BOLENS collector since I was a teenager. My friends father was a BOLENS dealer. I'm 58years old now. I've had my H16 over 30years. It gets heavy use ALL the time.
@@josephrodwell6643 It is interesting to know a bit about your Bolens history, thanks. Our first Bolens was a H16 too which dad got about 25 years ago, way before I was born. We have over 40 Bolens tractors in our collection now. It is very hard to find Bolens tractors and attachments over here in the UK. We would love to find a 3pt for one of our HT's but we have been searching over many years now without any luck. Take care
What other implements are available for that model?
We have more attachments for a Bolens tube frame than any other of our tractors. Some of those attachments do need a rebuild. We have a plough, front end loader, tiller, sickle bar mower, flail mower, snow blade, reel mower and various cutting decks. Attachments that they made that we do not have include a cab, centre mounted grader, cultivator, disc harrow, trencher, shredder, post hole digger, generator. I am sure I have missed a few. We would love to find a shedder but they were not imported to the UK. Take care
like 51 Well, that repair was far too easy!
Thank you. It is not often that job go this well. Take care
Good work
I would love to have e a scickle bar
They are a very cool attachment. We have another one but that is not in very good condition. Front mounted sickle bars were a common attachment for Bolens Ride-a-matics over here but despite it being a popular attachement, we do not have one for any of our Ride-a-matics. Take care
I didn't know that there were sickle bar attachments for these tractors. Pretty cool! Glad to see the cameraman out mowing. I was watching this video while sitting in an airport waiting for a flight and when the RAF flew over, I thought the noise was outside this airport. Keep up the good work and keep training that cameraman. He's showing improvement!
Thanks 👍 They are a rare attachment but were available for most garden tractors. We have another one which is project some time in the future. For the Bolens ride-a-matic tractors you could get a front sickle bar mower and we would love to find one of those. The RAF are very busy at the moment, they do a lot of training in our area. Take care
Very good. The sickle tools are very effective at cutting grass. Great to own one!@@GardenTractorBoy
I noticed you are missing all four wear plates, at about the 13:30 mark you can see the lines in the paint where they used to be, the knife slapping around loose isn't a good idea and will affect cutting performance ... good video though.
Thanks for the great information. These attachments are very rare over here and we have not been able to compare this with another one. We will look for some pictures and scan the parts manual to see what we have missing. Take care
@@GardenTractorBoy let me know if uou need any measurements, mine need to be adjusted anyway.
@@shearedapinagain Thank you very much. A close up picture showing what it should look like would be great if you have the chance. If so, can you email it to me at josephwreeman@gmail.com thanks
@@GardenTractorBoy sent 👍
@@shearedapinagain Thank you very much. This is very intersting and makes me wonder why they were removed from mine. Some measurements would be fantastic but only when you are next working on yours and assuming it is not asking too much. Thanks Joseph
