    My grandfather had a three hundred acre farm with sweet corn and pumpkin and watermelon. He had a 1550 and a three bottom plow.

    I read an article on Oliver farm equipment that there was 3 brothers and when the older 2 had died the younger brother sold stock to White that built trucks in the early 60s and they started pulling the profit for the truck line instead of putting it back into Oliver farm equipment

    Great video, you're going to put me out of work! A couple of things I would add. The 1550 could be ordered with an oil bath air cleaner the first couple of years. I'm surprised the owner didn't order that, but it might go back to what you were saying about the premium air cleaner, it was working in a dusty environment. The other thing is early 1550s only had 3 gauges, with warning lights for oil pressure and amps, just like the 1600.

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Editing this video took me forever. I finally just accepted that it wouldn’t be perfect and put it out there. Haha. Now that you say that, I do recall seeing a 1550 with the warning lights, but I’ve never seen the oil bath in one. I guess I just didn’t pay close enough attention. And don’t worry, I think you have good job security, you’re much better prepared when you make your videos. I’m kind of spontaneous about filming.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trust me, I'm all spontaneous in filming. It's all in the editing. I'm thinking about making a behind the scenes video this winter when I have more time. I bet you had a few hours into this video when you start figuring overlaying literature images.

      I actually started making a “blooper reel” of all the stuff I cut out. I don’t think the average person realizes how much time is spent on one 20 minute video. I reach a point where I’ve watched it so many times I just roll with it.

      My 1966 model 1550 has the same gauge setup as Ross’s, but has an oil bath filter.

    Thanks for sharing. I just bought the first new tractor my grandfather bought new, a 1968 1550. It's a project, but it'll fit right in with the 880 great grandpa bought new, the 1967 1650 grandpa had, and the 2-88 he bought new the same year I was born.

    I can remember the local dealer bringing out a new 1950 for dad to try out since dad was looking for a new tractor. Nice history lesson on your (1550) tractor, I enjoyed it.

    Interesting learned a few things mine is 157 842 -502 and if everything is correct it's the 2nd one. Almost sold it after I got it has the suicide transmission it has been clocked at 23 and had room on the throttle for a little more.
    Noticed that someone had found out the front tires are a little special you put the correct ones on

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is interesting! That seems like it’s the second one unless I’m ignorant of some other detail. I’ve always wanted to take a high speed rear end and put the Hydraul- shift in front of it. They say to not do that because it will go scary fast. But now I have to try it 🤣

    Great Video.Chris Losey recommended your channel.I have an 1850 with the claw deleted. I always thought it was field done but looked factory. Now I know. I've always been grateful for it since it sees a disc mower regularly and the unequal loading of the arms seems a little scary. I lightly welded the 1950 closed to prevent an accident. Not a heavy weld so a purist can undo it when I am dead and gone. But for piece of mind.

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!! That’s why I was glad to have it as well. I thought the uneven weight of the mower might cause it to come loose. I figured this would be a perfect job for this tractor! I know lots of people who have welded them for disc mowers. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

      I ran across that said the claw was the option and everyone wanted the coupler. I've noticed at shows the 1550 commonly shows up without claws like oliver wanted to get rid of them. I've got 2 sets one came of a 1600 my original got bent

    Awesome video sir and once again I learned something that I didn’t know. I figured the 1550 replaced the 880. A friend of mine has 3 of them and he mentioned that his gas narrow front like yours might be for sale here soon so I think I’ll have on here someday soon I hope

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks again! The 1650 was the replacement for the 880. The 1550s are good little tractors, I know of someone who had three of them as well.

    New to the channel. Been watching Chris Losey for about a year. Chris has a great vid on "power beyond". Thanks for the history lesson. I grew up on Oliver in NC Indiana. Still running some White equipment and recently got an 1800C that we plan to restore. It is really close to being a parts tractor but we want to restore it to it's former glory, only with a 310 diesel. It'll make a great auger tractor and other light duty,

    Any advice on the vacuum advance on one of these? After overhauling my 1550 motor it runs like a top at idle and wide open but getting between the two is ruff going and the vacuum advance is what I have narrowed it down to.

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The vacuum advance distributors are not that great anymore because most of them are wore out. Easiest fix would be to get a new distributor from Korves Oliver or other such places. However, if you want to mess with your original you can try the following: Use a flat screwdriver and push down on the plate that the points are mounted to. While holding it down, set the points. After everything is tight then let up on the plate. The points will probably look closed but put the cap back on and start it. This procedure has worked for me. I figure once the engine starts turning it pulls the plate and everything is happy again.

    Just getting my first tractor just happened to be an Oliver 1550 "68" .
    What type of motor oil , rearend oil & hydraulic oil also coolant do I need to use?
    Also what battery do I need?
    Also what battery

    • @rosstheoliverman

      I use 15w40 in the engine, 80/90 in the rear, and premium hydraulic fluid. Green antifreeze and whatever 12v battery you want. I think it’s a 6526 that fits in that battery box.

      I would also check the fuel line and make sure the fuel is coming out fully. I had one once where, while the carburetor was off getting rebuilt, a mud wasp had crawled into the fuel line a ways and built a restriction. The tractor would run for a minute or so and then run out of gas.
