However, from a technical standpoint - despite Neil Diamond's version having the benefit of far better recording quality when originally performed - Bobby Darin's tone, projection, clarity and purity of voice are superior. Granted, Neil's more gravelly version may appeal to certain listeners more, especially as his has the benefit today of being remastered better than Bobby's can be (to date). It is all ultimately up to the listener, but having heard Bobby's version many times, I disagree with your opinion. The emotional intensity Darin put into this song is simply greater to my ears, not just the technique. He sung as if he was living the lyrics in that moment and singing directly to his lover, as was the case with several other love songs he did (such as "Happy"). Neil's version of this is fine, but I don't hear the same intensity of emotions in his take. To each their own. Note: This was one of Bobby's final recordings. Despite his declining health and tremendous difficulty breathing, he held notes out and belted with beautiful technique. I've never heard Neil Diamond be able to match that, even in a studio recording. Darin wasn't "copying" anyone simply because it was a cover song or simply because Neil's version was what everyone heard more often. The background music wasn't very different from the original, but that has nothing to do with Bobby's performance.
