I've been using Cubase since version 5, i think. For me Cubase is like a big house with a myriad dark rooms. I tell you, looking at your content the rooms are lighting up one by one. Wish in turn results in better mixes for me. Thanks!

Try writing 1 BAR automation on a synth, or bass line (press 0) with the quantize ON - 1/16 or 1/8T... (volume or gate or EQ- type as an example) and then select and ctrl-D or fill loop to 4 bars.

@@mixdownonline Have been working with Cubase Pro for a good five years now, tho I know many of it's fonction. You often give me clue about certain tools or way to do thing....that I actually change my way to do thing....and it all works beautifully....so a great thank for all thoses "tips". You do have a way to make "this" very simple. I can't say the same thing about cubase official tutoriel, that seem to be spread at time, in to many way, (they sometimes try to teach, to many things in one tutoriel, which makes things a bit confusing)
that it makes it difficult to get the hang of it. You're an excellent teacher....and I can't say the same about some others teachers...So thank a great deal, always learn a bit more with you.

Thanks for this informative video, I am now going to assign the controller section of my MIDI keyboard. Quick question please: You set the automation via MIDI controller input to reduce the pre-gain and also the fader volume of that vocal part clip in the track - Q: Why do you lower the volume if you have lowered the pre-gain? Hoping someone can explain this. Many thanks

I do the volume automation with a VCA control.
    The advantage
If you have vocal on channel 1, switch it to a VCA channel and do volume automation on the VCA channel.
So I have the advantage that channel 1 with the audio file is not blocked by the automation !!
That is the green R! If you have the automation active (green R lights up) then you can no longer adjust the channel fader. Then it is fixed on the automation! But if you do that with the VCA, that's not the case! 😉
Advantage also work with VCA bus
I also do all bus groups in 1 VCA rods so I can make all channels louder or quieter in 2 seconds.
because I can control the bus groups with it.
So I don't have to make every single fader quieter to adjust the mix to that
-4db to -6db master out put! (Mastering requirement)
Is really an advantage if you have 60 tracks or more so you do group bus of drum, guitars, bass, vocal backing, vocal piano and so on (so-called stamps.)
And then you only have 4- 10 groups bus or more where you can control via a VCA!
    Very helpful and time-saving! 😉🤟

Thanks for sharing my friend :-) I'm a big fan of VCA, use them all the time. ( th-cam.com/video/SISP7L2Um1E/w-d-xo.html ) But this video is more about Pre-Gain automation, and for Pre Gain, VCA Fader are useless.

Excellent video, as usual. So, in order of precedence the following is true about initial, pre-fader level gain-staging in Cubase. An audio track's "pre-gain" control is at the top of the gain-staging food chain and impacts the entire track. Automating an audio track's pre-gain level via a Quick Control setting simply provides another way of implementing pre-gain control; this implementation continues to impact the audio track on the whole. Clip gain provides finer-grained control at the audio event level, but the change in level is relative to the existing pre-fader level set by the pre-gain control. Implementing the pen tool to draw clip gain values still only impacts the relative audio event (pre-fader) level changes at the audio event level but provides another input mechanism for this purpose. Is it possible to assign a Quick Control at the audio event level? If not, is there an alternative for doing so, such as assigning a MIDI controller to the Cubase pen tool within the context of audio event level editing?
I continue seeking better workflow efficiencies in Cubase. When setting up a rough mix, prior to applying any plugins to inserts and sends, I think it makes sense first to address pre-fader level gain-staging for the reasons you state in your video here: th-cam.com/video/gKP0Sc1gtjM/w-d-xo.html. In the case where an audio track contains a single clip event (as when performing on a track that plays throughout a piece), I think workflow is improved by automating pre-gain values and then editing to taste afterward. However, if the dynamic range varies widely during the performance, it may be easier to chop the audio track strategically into several audio events and then adjust clip gain values accordingly. In the latter case, have the ability to execute clip gain automation via a MIDI learn capability would be most beneficial.
In general, in terms of preserving musicality and feel, I opt for automation while playing back a track rather than forensically editing a track's audio level when the play head is stopped.
I am most interested in your opinion on this subject. Thank you.

Got a good question about the score editor using a midi track
My project starts off with voice and piano
(midi tracks) not in tempo and it is set for 4/4 time. When the orchestra comes in the tempo starts at the third beat of the measure as seen in the score. How can at least the piano midi track to start at the first beat of the measure to be viewed on the staff with the sound synced.

Every time I think I know enough about Cubase, you release another video and I'm like wow, really? I never knew about the pen tool for clip-gain. I also never explored Quick Controls before and you just showed me how to use my MIDI keyboards fader for automation right after I ordered a Faderport so I'll have that until it arrives. Awesome job as usual Chris! One Question Chris, can you apply Quick Controls globally? I seem to have to set it track by track. If you can this will really help with my Faderport setup.

Great video! I also watched your video on VST Connect and found it so clear and helpful.
My one remaining question is - can you automate multiple tracks at once? For example, I’d love to control and automate volume adjustments for multiple tracks at once using the mixer sliders - trying to figure out how to sync my Korg Nanokontrol 2 to each volume fader for each input in my mixer. Seems like a no-brainer thing, in Ableton you you can MIDI map those faders...but I can’t find anything on it! Any help would be appreciated!

Chris clip envelope is quite messy and fiddly ditto endless cutting the audio. What cubase needs is clip automation, having the same kind of automation like a track but directly on the audio with the same tools.

When I record sounds on a Cubase with a keyboard, the notes appear too early on the timeline, even though I play accurately. I know this is a multi-user problem. I have tried to get help from the Internet in various forums and Cubase manual. I've tried all the recommended measures, but the problem persists. My Cubase is the newest 10.5.12. All updates are up to date.
