The input channels using plugins is a game changer for me. I can now use a preamp, EQ and compressor (or whatever is needed) like I would if I was using outboard gear. Thank you Chris!
I really don't understand how I missed it! I have so these different input bus options and routings, but i never thought to put plugins on the input bus and record 🤣
The more I think about this, the more I think Steinberg should REALLY be pushing this. Most people say, "Want to record using your plugins? Buy an Apollo interface and the UAD plugins". I have a new Steinberg UR816C interface that comes with Yamaha DSP plugins designed to be used during recording. They are good and all but I'd rather use one of my Neve 1073 type preamp plugins or API or, etc. Just record on the input channel and you're all set.
No bull, no nonsense, just DAMN GOOD INFO!!!! You are a godsend Chris!!! Life's too short to spend frustrated!!! Thanks for saving us precious time!! Peace dude!!!
Thanks You! The audio monitoring option now allows me to listen to the instrument before the punch in point AND during recording. Could never solved that riddle until seeing your vid. Don't know why that's not the default mode.
I have learned many more tips and tricks from Chris videos , I don't need to go for another videos or search for another videos, this is the right channel thanks Chris tips and videos.
A little tip, I find helpful, is that when you say what you enter on the keyboard (say CMD+C), make it pop up as an image on the screen. It´s easier to catch the keycommand, if it´s not heard properly.
I’ve always done it this way too: lanes and versions. But I’ve realized it sets me up for a ton of tedious editing. These days I’m trying Nuendo’s “replace” mode, which is how we did it in the old days without DAWs-you record, and if you don’t like it, you record over the top, lose everything, until you get it right. No editing! And become a better musician.
Hi Chris, thank you for the very useful lesson about the variety type of recording on Cubase but I have a question how can we adjust our punch in punch out recording with the footswitch pedal? that will be very interested thank you very much for your work!
Recording mode!!! Soooo helpful!!!!! I think you covered it also in your course but I totally forgot about it! And the punch in/out!!!! Geeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Can you recommend a footswitch to connect with CC121 for manually starting the recording?
Bonus bonus feature... Audio retrospective recording. I set mine in preferences to be larger than the default value. I drop my clients in manually most of the time and have an extra 3 secs at the front of the wav means no pressure to get the drop point perfect. Just roll the wav back a bit if you were late.
Very helpful. Does your tracking/recording template largely mirror your mixing template (minus the FX channels and all of the insert and send FXs)? Thanks!
This is great! Working throughout trandport controls would be helpful. For example, you grab the range and select it, but it seems that process is somewhat tricky. Maybe you have key commands for that. But I don't know how to set that up. Grabbing an event and moving it either along the timeline horizontally or vertically through the arrangement would be really helpful. I am still making my way through the Cubase course and I am finding it very helpful. Thank you!
Yes, to set up the Punch in/out locator you can use the Range Selection Tool and set that up with a keycommand you will have to set up manually like I did in the video. Glad you're enjoying the Cubase course :)
Hey Chris, thanks for these tips! Very nice video. While is was watching and you showed the lanes feature, I was again wondering what would be the best way to edit these overlapping events? What's you're take on this? I find it very annoying that you have to select ALL overlapping events to trim them effectively.
Thanks for the helpful videos. I know this obvious to everyone else, but when I use the take lanes, and have previous takes, but want to do more takes, when I start recording, the PREVIOUS TAKES ARE NOT MUTED and playback while I'm trying to record a new take. It's driving me mad! None of the recording modes at the bottom left of the screen seem to work. Is it in the settings or Preferences? Thanks!
Chris, great video as always! Regarding placing plugins (committing) on the input channel, is the main advantage just saving cumulative processing power for large projects with the disadvantage being no way to edit/reverse them, so for simple/small projects it's presumably best to place plugins after the input channel?
It's more of a workflow and personal thing. The good side of committing whether you're using hardware or plugins, is too get the best recording at the source so that means, less work when mixing but that also means that there's no turning back ;-) You need to know what you're doing when doing so imo
Hi Chris, I just saw your video while away from home. I didn't know about the input channels and the effects ! Wow ! Does this work with all kind of plugins ? I mean even the UAD ones ? Thank you for your videos, you are a truly good educator ;)
Salut Michel, yes it does work with all your plugins but depending on the buffer size, you will need to deal with latency if you're monitoring through Cubase

@@mixdownonline That's what I've been doing so far. Finding a flat spot in the sinuscurve. However it doesn't always do the trick. THANKS, I knew the auto punch in and out was there but was to lazy to figure it out on my own. Thanks for doing it for me. Can you do a demo on auto crossfades also so I don't have to figure that out on my own? I spend hours getting rid of clicks because my daughter just punches in and out wherever she wants knowing I will fix it.
@@mixdownonline I was hoping for something like this: www.sweetwater.com/insync/batch-fades-in-pro-tools/ , you're right, X-fades won't get rid of recorded pops and clicks but when your daughter punches out of a long sustained bass note right in the middle of it, it can certainly help. A function that would X-fade between all events or a range as a starting point to work from would be useful.
Nice tips Chris! I use the folder very often. I record drums a lot (group editing enabled) but i have to open all the individual track lanes in order to comp the takes. If i don't open every track it is only comping the one highlighted. It quickly gets messy when i have 20 tracks of drums. Have you experienced this bug?
Hey Catalin! I'm not Chris, but this is what I've found. Selecting takes with group editing enabled should change them. However, swipe comping only changes the selected track. If you want to edit all at once you have to cut the region you want to replace and then select the correct take with the comp tool. That should update all tracks. If you want to swipe comp, all lanes have to be open. Hope this helps! Also, if you have group editing enabled and try to select a lane with the selection tool, all lanes start to open, so make sure you do all your comp editing with the comp tool so you don't accidentally open multiple lanes.
Hey Ron, you seem to know your Cubase pretty well :) You are 100% correct on this. I actually demonstrate this in my Editing in Cubase course. I don't know why Swipe Comping works only on the selected track, doesn't make any sense, but that's the way it is for now. Thanks Ron!

For me I don't see input channels the same way you have them. Also in the section where it shows whats connected to the bus it shows the interface, but it doesnt show my microphone. What am i doing wrong?
Hi Chris, I've been a Cubase user since version 4...but just the other day without doing anything, it blacklisted all of my Waves plug ins! Can you offer how to get them back? It won't let me manually add them back from the blacklist. Anyone else?
Lanes are useful when recording the same part several times for a better editing workflow to build the perfect take. Track Versions are useful for creative purposes, when you want to try different parts of the same section of a song. I can make a video on this, it's a good question.
Most of the time, yes, but It's more of a workflow and personal thing. A lot of well known recording engineers will record through hardware to get the tone close to what they want to end up with when mixing and to get the best recording possible at the source so that means, less work when mixing but that also means that there's no turning back, so you need to know what you're doing. SO one can do the equivalent using the input inserts in Cubase. Not a must, just a preference. You can also use the Input Inserts for metering plugins like I will demonstrate in next week's video, so stay tuned :)
