Wood Turning A New Inside Out Ornament
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 3 ธ.ค. 2020
- I decided to turn another Inside Out Christmas Ornament. Made from Cherry and finished with shellac based sanding and the sprayed with lacquer.
These are fun to do and with a little practice they are not all that hard to do.
You can figure out what the shape will look like before starting but it is fun to see what develops.
I did one once that made a heart shaped window and that is fairly tricky to get right.
I used Zinsser Seal Coat and Rust-Oleum lacquer for the finish.

Very good video, and I’m glad I stayed until the end , taking notes, bc I have plenty pieces of 1&1/2” strips, but they are not 1&1/2X1&1/2, but rather 1&1/2”x 5/8”
Happy you watched it all. the pieces can be anything your have. It will just change the overall size of the turning.
But the do need to make a square when all 4 pieces are together.
So 1.5X1.5 for the each of the 4 pieces. 1.5X.62 will not work.
Hope that makes sense. i should have a drawing showing that if needed.
Gary
Lovely turning Gary thanks

Thank you Dave!
Very Nice project ❤
Thank you Andre!
Very nice! I’m understanding better why gifted individuals are creative and have to get all that stuff out in one way or another. Prob feels like your head will explode. Kinda like an over pressure failure or something.
Thank you Danny. Actually doing these keeps my mind busy and keeps other things out of it.
Spectacular, really clever
Thank so much. Happy you liked it.

Thank you Bob.
@@ThePapa1947 I've been wanting to buy a lathe, I used to have one and I'm no stranger to woodworking. I am however struggling financially. I was hoping that you could point me in the right direction for a decent one, I definitely want to try to make one of your inside out ornaments and small decorations to sell.
We live in an are where it's mostly us older retired folks like me. We own our homes, cars and furniture as well, and if you could recommend small things that I can turn and sell. I hope you don't mind me asking. I recently came across your Utube channel and I've been watching and enjoying your videos, and the fact that you explain what you're doing better than the others.
Thank you for your kindness and you're Wonderful Videos.
Bob
For what you want to do a smaller lathe will do.
Ornaments, little round boxes and small vases for dried flowers (called weed pots) would be a good start
Not sure the price range you are in but something with electronic speed control is nice
I can recommend more based on price
Gary
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching Rusty Toolman!

I continue to learn new tricks of working with wood. Your work is a true blessing. Please stay safe and may the Lord be with you and your family.
Thank you so much Jabulani. We have had some real hard times but with our Lord we have gotten through them.
May he watch over you as well my friend,

Really enjoyed this video. I haven't done any inside out projects yet although I do have a blank glued up. Reallynice piec
Thank you David, they are really lots of fun and so many options. I recently did a 3 sided one and then decided to make a 6 sided version.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, I am amazed at your talent, I am 65 and in high school I took workshop and loved working on the lathe and I never imagined the type of creations that you come up with. You are by far a real master at your craft, Danny.
Thank you very much Dan. I am a bit older than you and remember my first turning in a grade school shop class. I fell in love with turning on that day.
Then as an apprentice wood pattern maker the first job I made was turned on the lathe. Could not be much better than that. Needless to say I still love wood turning.
Gary
Very nice Gary, excellent👍👍👍👍👍
Many thanks Mark happy you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
I am intrigued by this inside-out business. It just twists my mind to see the form once it get inverted and what you can still do with it. This one is no exception Gary. Cherry is one of the most beautiful woods - simple and pure - and I am happy you chose it Gary. Thank you for sharing this beauty with us🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷⏳💉
Thank you Mike and it is a very interesting process. Very fun to do for sure.
Yes Cherry is a pretty special wood. I used the shellac to deepen the color just a little. Clear lacquer would not have done that.
Hope all is well with you,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 We're doing fine. You and the clan ?
Deepens just a little for now though it will darken with age, eh?
Super schön 🤩 👍🏻

That cool I'm going to try that

Love the shape and the wood.
Thanks so much...happy you liked it.
Gary
Hi Gary......another beautiful turn! One of the things I appreciate about your work (and others of course) is your ability and talent of looking at wood as sectional...not just one piece of solid stock to be turned or hollowed. This kind of segmentational (new word!) crafting opens up a whole new horizon to wood shaping and carving...many thanks. Best wishes and stay healthy my friend.
Thank you so much Dr. Skip and I like the new word.

Glad You made this video earlier, Gary, becouse I planned to turn something with this technique and You helped me a lot 👍 In one moment I thought that You made too thin walls and turning it forward will be very difficult but I forgot that You are keeping the chisels so everything is under control 👌 Beautiful ornament and great work 💪
Be safe my friend. Rav
Thank you Rav and those walls are about as thin as I wanted to go. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Take care my friend,

I always look forward to your new videos, Gary. This is another example of why I and so many others enjoy watching you work. Gary, I just watched your video for this xmas ornament. I see where you used a piece of SS wire to hang it with.....Here's a suggestion. Purchase a box of very fine stainless steel cotter pins, perhaps 1/6" diameter and maybe 2" long, or as long as you can get them. To hang things like this you only need to drill the appropriate sized hole in the end and glue the cotter pin in with some CA glue, and/or spread the ends where they come through on the inside, then it will never pull out. You can trim the 2" long cotter pin to length just prior to gluing it in place, but with the long pins, you can use it for multiple projects, and they're cheap for a box of 100 pins.
Thanks for the idea Peter. With the cutter pin you already have the look on the end. The wire I used here is what I use to make fishing lures. Plenty strong for a 40lb. salmon and I have the bending pliers for getting a look on the end.
But I sure will look into some stainless cutter pins, Sounds very simple.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I also noticed on Amazon that you can get a 'loop pin' which is basically a thin wire formed with a loop on the end, exactly the same shape as the loop on an eye bolt, but it's just a thin stainless wire. I was just thinking that it might look a bit more professional for some applications, and it's nice and dainty.
love it
Thank you very much!
Well explained video Gary. I keep this video in my list of projects I want to do. Not for this year, but next year. Thanks Gary.
Frank.
Thanks Frank and I have made a list of 3 other shapes I want to make now.

Hi Gary, that’s a beautiful ornament my man!! I always look forward to your projects! Thanks Gary!!
Thanks Bruce happy you like it. I appreciate you watching and I always look forward to what you come up with as well.
Gary
Hey Gary, great ornament and wonderful sharing. The sharing is something I've always loved about the craft.
I've made smaller inside-out ornaments in the past and I was inspired by your older video to make a few larger. Things I have learned from these vids:
Larger works great.
Strapping tape and big jaws for turning the inside. (I've used hot glue in the past and it worked "too well" -- the wood fibers would sometimes tear. Also hose clamps.)
When gluing up for the inside, just glue and brown paper on the ends. (Head-slap)
I've posted one on The WoWs site (World of Woodturners). About to post another. Don't know your last name and I will give attribution as Gary from Oregon. And your TH-cam name.
And thanks for sharing!
Thank you Greg happy to hear you are having fun making these. I do want to make a much bigger one but it will not be an Christmas ornament. I will check the WoW site and look around.
Someone posted one of my turnings on World Wide Woodturners and had his name for credit on it. Could have been an honest mistake but it was fixed after I questioned it.
I will be great to see yours and appreciate the attribution you will give.
Take care,
Gary
That's nice Gary! Good job!
Glad you like it Bill and thanks for watching.
Gary
I adore. I enregister all. Lol. I have buy the 4 softwares Wood Turner Pro after your advice. Extra. Pleasure. 👍👍👏👏
Thank you so much Patrick. You will have fun with the software.

Really creative and beautiful, I love the finish
Enjoyable video as always, thank you for sharing 😉
Thanks so much I am happy you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching...Gary
These are fun to turn, Gary and I really like the shape of yours. Very delicate. Someone suggested I should turn an ornament so maybe I will. It's certainly the right time of year! You got a great finish with the lacquer. I've never tried that because it takes forever but you've got it down, pat. Hey, you went to get a cup of coffee but you didn't get me one, what's up with that? LOL! Nice job, buddy, keep'em coming!
Phil
Thanks Phil and for sure you should turn one. I will do more but I need to change it up some. Probably not this year but who knows.
Oh I had 2 cups but it was so cold I drank the first one down before I made it to the lathe. Figured you would not notice so I just drank the other one..lol
See ya on the next one...
Gary
I've made four last month, all in the learning mode, with different style windows in each. I use hot melt glue and tape on the beginning glue up, seem to work well. Have a good day, Gary. Bill
Thank you Bill and I have thought about using hot glue. Maybe the next one.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice Gary!!!! Always wondered how these got made. Thank you!!!
Thank you Chris and it does seem tricky but actually not all that hard to do.
Take care,
Gary
Hi Gary... beautiful inside out ornament... I have never tried this... I must give it a go... I hope that you have a big tree to put it on ... lovely work...great video as always...take care... all the best.....Andy
Thanks Andy and you should give it a try. I am sure you would do just fine. We do not get real big trees anymore but these ornaments tend to hang somewhere all year long.
Cheers,
Gary
It looks really nice, I'm going to try it with white maple
Thank you I am happy you liked it. By all means white maple would be beautiful.
Gary
Thanks Gary, I will now use your 1/2 thickness tip. Still on learning curve. I perhaps made a mistake by using my "cheaper" wood to start out. Now will progress to some quality hardwoods cut into precise blanks.
Hi Bill, yes if you go much past that half point there will not be much to work with. Check out the video I pointed out in your previous comment. I think it is a great way for someone to get the hang of this. Although I did not use it on my first one. I came up with the idea when others were asking about inside out turnings.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Best of luck,
Gary
Great job Gary. You had me wondering a little until you put the tape on. I've had them fly before, of course, I turn a lot faster than most folks. I even broke the packing tape once. I now use wire ties.
You take care old buddy, Larry
Thanks Larry! I figured I better show adding the tape. It is a little extra security for sure. I have done them without the tape and with only the tape. I have seen people use hose clamps but that is a bit much for me.
Hope you are doing better my friend,
Gary
That turned out so good and it’s very beautiful love it take care Gary
Thank you Mike happy you liked it.
Take care and stay warm...well around here it is pretty cold for us.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I Will I’m in Illinois what state are you in?
@@mikeyoung8126 Oregon and we have fairly mild temperatures. But it has been a bit cold lately ..for us
@@ThePapa1947 A very beautiful state I would love to visit the state someday it’s been pretty cold here below freezing at night
When you hung it from the wire I first thought you meant electrical wire. It would be cool to have a dim LED inside. Especially if you hung an ornament in there that was bigger than the openings. Just a quick thought.
I do have LED lights that fit in there. They can flash different colors which looks pretty cool.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary , Brilliant ! and superbly demonstrated mate , I love the extra mile you went on this with the finishing touches on the stem.
