- A huge THANK YOU to all my subsribers and viewers! This is my 12th filmed project, and I finally got around to making something Christmas related! This is my first Christmas ornament, and I'm pretty happy with it! Let me know what you think!
I want to thank Frogblanks.com for sending me these samples! I was very impressed with the quality of the pieces, the vivid colors, and the workability. Since these are laminated veneer sheets, you'll find that tools dull fairly quickly, similar to turning exotic wood species with high silica content. However, these blanks have potential for a natural high polish without adding any finishing polish. Altogether, I am very impressed with these blanks, and I would definitely recommend this company to anyone interested in engineered wood.
I really like how this ornament design turned out, since the ribbon is held with a knot at the bottom of the hole to keep the snowman centered and free floating. The ribbon itself is adjustable in the hole and can be twisted to accommodate any hanging angle. I did have trouble installing the eyelit in the top hat. Given the hardness of the katalox, I had to drill a 1/16 inch hole in the hat and then CA glue the eyelit in order to get it to work, but it turned out ok in the end. Let me know what you think!
I really appreciate all of the comments and feedback. I am always willing to learn. I'm also trying to become more efficient with my finishing techniques. If you'd like to help me out, feel free to comment and let me know how I'm doing! Also, let me know what you'd like me to make next!
If you're not a subscriber, it would really help me out if you became one! Also, comments, likes, and shares really help promote my videos, and I always enjoy reading and responding to them.

This one choked me up, it was so beautiful. Great trick turning the two pieces together then flipping them.
Thanks John! I appreciate that! This was a super fun experiment. Cheers!

Beautiful! Great work!
Thanks so much, Rick!
thats very nice David and thanks for the ideal for next year! Keep it going!!!!!!
Thanks Larry!
Very, very good! Very balanced . Notting too much, Notting less!
Much appreciated!
AAAA the little carrot nose! This piece was just pure love.
great video thanks for sharing!
Thanks Jeff! The tape is purely to prevent the two pieces from flying apart. To some degree this was superfluous given the even contact from the steb center and the tail stock. It was a safety precaution at least...
What an absolutely adorable piece, I'd love to have these on my tree
Thanks Donna! For now, this is a one-of-a-kind, but hopefully I'll have time to do more of that. Cheers! And Merry Christmas!
Never seen a 2 piece in side out turning before. I love it
Thank you! It was an exciting experiment, since the curves influence the opposite side differently with just 2 pieces. Cheers!
I really enjoyed the outside part and love that blank. I could see a large one of these on display on a shelf or mantle
Thanks Kyle! This was a lot of fun and a good concept to challenge the brain. It was interesting to figure out how far to go on the inside in order to get a tapering effect on the profile. I'll definitely be doing more of this! Cheers!
That is beautiful.
Thanks James! Cheers!
Apart from the incredible work you present to us, the combination with this enchanting music is something fantastic !!!! Well done !!!!
Thanks so much!
Fantastic
Thanks!
Great David! I don't know whether your talent is woodturning , video production or both. No, I really do.

Thanks, Richard! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Excellent work, David! Really like the 2 sided ornament vs the more usual 4 sided. And love the way you suspended the snowman in the center.
Thank you, Jay! I am starting to agree with you there. The two sided designs have a lot of potential for practical items too, like bracelets, pendants, etc... Cheers!
I love it!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow what a great looking ornament. Nicely done. The first time i have seen something like that. Thumbs UP.

Very cool, never tried an inside out with only 2 pieces, going to definitely have to give this a try. I think I have some laminate pieces in reds that would look great. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much! One can only hope! But one week at a time! Cheers!
Thanks I love the color wanted to be sure before ordering.
Thanks TJ. That color is actually called Bluebell, not Tardis. My mistake...
TJ take a look at frogblanks.com and give me a shout if I can answer any additional questions cliff@frogblanks.com 🐸

Thanks so much! Merry Christmas!
Great work, David!
Thank you, Rick! Merry Christmas!
One of the best ornaments I e seen on TH-cam. Nice form. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! Cheers!
For your first Christmas ornament, you did a great job. Well done. I wished that laminated ply was available in Australia. I have tried every where but no one stocks it here. I will have to see if I can make my own.
Your 1st video for me to see - totally impressed by not only your skill & techniques, but also by your video production, topped off by the smooth soundtrack which completed the experience.
Have not started turning yet (tho I did a vase form in wood about 50 years ago to mold a copper spinning projuct), I have been learning via these many videos. As a retired jeweler/metalsmith, thought I only wanted to now do larger pieces - bowls, etc., but this may draw me back to smaller sculptural pieces, especially for Christmas. Many Blessings.
That is the cutest ornament I’ve ever seen, and it’s all handmade. Fantastic work! I love these items you make so effortlessly. Bravo!!
Thank you! At least for me it’s not effortless yet. Perhaps someday it will be!
Very impressed . I would love to make some of these for my family , only two problems though ,the first being that I only saw your vid .on Xmas eve. And the second being that I must find a source of the timber here in the. U.K. Looking on the bright side , I’ve got twelve months though . Good work , I look forward to seeing more.
Thanks very much, John! Good luck in your turnings! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Nice job David 👍
Thank you very much, Mark!
David wat werk je toch sierlijk. Je danst met het hout. Het is als een meditatie. Het is zo prachtig wat je maakt. 👏
Hartelijk bedankt! Je bent zeer vriendelijk. Houtbewerking moet ontspannend en artistiek zijn! Ik ben zo blij dat je ervan hebt genoten!
This was a beautiful turning. one of the things I learned from another turner is when using the Yorkshire grit is to use the sanding sealer after the Yorkshire grit . This helps on the overall shine. Just thought I'd let you know. Have a wonderful new year.
Thanks Richard for your comment and feedback! I haven’t heard of sanding sealer being used after sanding grit. In my mind the sanding sealer makes the grain stiff enough to smooth evenly and then a wax or shine process begins. I guess the possibilities are endless though...
Nice work!
Thank you!
David.... that was a great job you did all around, and also very unique concept in using the colored spectra plywood. Awesome showcase in your turning abilities, and also how your mind is working. Just truly a beautiful ornament David!!!.. job well done. Your comming along amazingly!!!👍👍👍👍👍
