    Really glad it's walnut - so pretty a wood. Rush job post-retirement huh ? Only one thing could require that ... I sure she'll love it 💝.
    Please show how to plan out an inside turning - I end up using the trial-and-error method. Ugh.

      Thank you Mike, yes she loves it. So much I made her 2 more and one of them will be in the video I spoke of. And it was not a rush job but I got them both done and will finish the editing on it tonight. It ended up to long for a bonus so it will be this Friday's video.

    Nice video Gary, thank you. I'm at the beginning stage of making inside/out Christmas ornaments, and watching your videos for ornaments as well.
    So you were a pattern maker in the pump industry. Our career paths had pumps in common, I worked as an engineer in the paper industry so am well acquainted with pumps and the pump companies. Can you share with me where you worked?

      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill, as soon as you get the hang of inside out turnings you will find them pretty easy to do.
      I did this video to help people understand the process. It would also work for a very special shape that you want to keep.
      th-cam.com/video/fmvAoT-9Njw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ThePapa1947
      So I worked in Portland Oregon. I started my apprenticeship in a small shop that was called West Coast Pattern. They are not there anymore but I learned a lot as it was a one employing shop for most of the time I worked there.
      I then moved to Dependable Pattern Works and retired in 2012. They change the name to DPW not long after I started there.
      I built patterns for many things while there and a good share of pump patterns.
      I recall building patterns for someone up your direction.

      @@ThePapa1947 Gary, this is close to home. I worked 10 yr at Weyerhaeuser Longview. One of our suppliers was Bingham Pump in Portland. Also, I remember driving south of Portland to search the warehouse of a pattern shop - maybe in Albany or nearby - for the pattern for some out of production stainless casting for a part we needed at the paper mill. In 1975 I transferred to corporate engineering and worked on pulp/paper projects throughout North America. Retired 2003.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting. We did work for a foundry in Albany Oregon. It was called Oremet. I made lots of pump patterns for them and many were cast in titanium. I have a picture of a pattern I made for a titanium pump that was so big it had to be cast in two sections and welded together.
      Bingham Pump had a pattern shop as well that made a lot of their patterns but many times they needed help from other shops in Portland.
      I love building patterns but I also love turning things at home just for the fun.

  • @kam70111
    @kam70111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It looks beautiful. I would like to ask you a question. Some do pure woodturning which is eco-friendly but some are doing resin. How much micro-plastic are they introducing into the environment?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Khan, well I do not do resin turning so that is hard to answer. But there are more and more turning resin so I would say a lot.
      I worked as a wood pattern maker. Sometimes we needed to reproduce those patterns so the foundry could mold more than one at a time.
      So I used a lot of epoxy and urethane resin as well as polyester risen. The fumes from them were very powerful. Not only in pouring the resin but in machining it. After pouring 100's of gallons of the stuff I have no interest in using any myself.
      Not sure if that helps but that is my take on resin.

    LED light: the “bottle stopper” style would work well here, up lighting the inside, and remaining accessible for changing batteries. Comes both in single light and in seed/rice/ fairy light styles. I have them if you have difficulty locating one. I stock up on them every year at Walmart during the Christmas decor season when they have all kinds of them on the shelf for low prices. BTW, another excellent turn and video.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank Valerie I will have to look into those. The ones I ordered arrive right after I finished most of the editing. I just might be able to open the hole enough to get them in. I just found the stoppers on Amazon they look perfect. Thanks for the tip. I have plans for the other ones I ordered. They come with remotes that can operate 1 or all 10. Turn them on and off and change colors. Pretty cool stuff.

    Yes I'd love to see a video detailing your process on inside out turnings. For that matter I'd be happy with any video you create.
    This is a great idea for Valentines Day. I love the way the light coming out shows up on the wall in the heart shape. I wish you had made this video a few weeks ago, but its too late now for we, your subs, to make one. I guess you'll get all of the glory this year. LOL!
    Where did you find the LED light for inside this project. I made a hollow Christmas tree and used an LED tea light very similar to this one. Your light seems to be much brighter than mine. I lined the inside of my tree with aluminum foil to help reflect more light. It sort of worked but kind of tedious gluing the foil in place.

      Thank you Billy! Yes I really like the lights and I got her some that have remote control that will turn them on and off plus change colors. She has not seen it yet but will Sunday. We renew our vows on Valentines day or the weekend closest every year at our church.
      Take care my friend,
      Gary
