very good. I have used many CAD systems dating from the 80s till now (CADAM, ProEngineer, Solidworks, SurfaceCAM, MasterCAM, etc). It has been about 15 years since I've done any CAD work at all and boy have things progressed! What FreeCAD offers for free used to cost $60K a license in the 90s. I'm getting back into it because my wife bought me a 3D printer :) . However, I didn't find FreeCad all that intuitive to use because of the jumping back and forth between "workbenches". Your videos are extremely helpful.
Nice to see your coming back to CAD, I know what it feels like coming back to 3D after a long break, have been through the same myself. The workbenches can be very confusing but once you have got used to them then they come second nature. I personally customize them in my day-to-day use but use the defaults for the videos. Tools can be moved from one workbench to another so I have a number of commonly used tools that I use the most on my toolbar. Glad your enjoying the videos.
Super helpful. I was getting very frustrated with FreeCAD and trying to manage all the bodies, pads, and sketches I was creating and trying to merge through boolean operations and this tutorial was exactly what I needed: clearly explained and demonstrated. Perfect!
I've avoided CAD for years and this tutorial has completely changed my mind. This would've took some work making this hard surface shape in software packages like Maya and Blender. And with exact measurements? forget about it. It would be a nightmare. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world.
I love your unique style of making tutorials, where you anticipate a natural reaction of an intelligent learner. He would often have a "second track" running in his mind, asking if this is the only way to do it, or what if he did it in a different way, or why he should be doing this step at all, etc. Most people make tutorial with a linear narration, where a model is created without any trouble. But when the learner tries it himself, even with a small variation, he gets stuck. But in your way of teaching, many of the _"what if-"_ scenarios are covered, so the learner becomes more confident in trying out different things, and yet he is able to predict what will happen. Even the *Comments* section is full of learning, where many learners have raised pertinent doubts and you have provided solutions. That's what makes it my favorite channel! Please keep up the good work! 👍

My pet hate is to go through a tutorial and not be aware of some of the possible things that can go wrong and how to correct or work around them. Believe it or not there is no script, well, for the larger builds or an idea for something I want to teach I tend to do a step by step quick run through as a series of written steps with screenshots but very very high level (I release these for certain levels of patreonage on patreon) all the rest is freestyle with a little thought ahead as I will add 'mistakes' which I will show how to fix. Even if a mistake is made I don't edit it out as these are valuable to understand how to correct. Really glad that people like yourself are appreciating these videos. Thanks once again.
@@MangoJellySolutions Extempore style suits you well: You are always in the flow, and never fumble for words or dawdle. 👌 Very rarely have I observed actions that were not needed. Such "spurious" moves can throw off even a thinking learner, because he would be looking for deeper meaning for that unintended action!
A new-user tip for the "Select" tool: If you create the box from left to right, you'll only select the items that completely fit inside your selection box. But if you go right-to-left, you'll select every item that touches/intersects with the selection box. (This is common in CAD software, and FreeCAD is no exception).
These tutorials are great! As a machinist I'll say one thing though: Only apply fillets and chamfers to the model if they're functional or cosmetic. If you only want sharp edges broken by, say, a 0.2mm chamfer, just call it out in the drawing :) Some CAM programs deal best with deburring on sharp model edges.
Also, adding chamfers or fillets to a CAD model all over just uses computing power 👍. As a time served draughtsman, , who started out on drawing board with Rotring pencils and pens, design it and draw it as if you were making it on a manual bridgeport, a Colchester lathe, and a surface grinder. I have seen too many uni grad designers causing too many unneeded probs for toolmakers. 😂

You are a fantastic teacher. Thank You for taking the time to teach freecad. For those having issues with the final two fillets, reduce the size of the top fillets from the instructed 24mm to something around 15mm, then re-create your last fillets
I had to run this three times having got rather lost. I found it was due to missing a mouse click or clicking off the workpiece. However it was worth the effort and it cemented some of the methods in my mind. You explain it very comprehensively and clearly. Many thanks.
It was worth taking the time to revisit the basics of Freecad, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I have been using Freecad for more than a year now, but I have just discovered that I was multiplying the constraints and other actions in an almost abusive way.

This has been a big help. I've overcome the initial frustration, and now I'm starting to make some slow progress. The toughest part has been the _body-origin-pad-pocket-sketch-etc_ tree. It's tough to know what to call that, and navigating it and understanding all of it is conceptually difficult. Slowly coming into focus.
Glad these are helping. Visualizing that operations create a history list can sometimes help to understand parametric design, and remember that the last operation is marked as the tip (little green arrow). I remember when I first started and it was very strange to me. Just remember we all started with this frustration at some point :) The hardest part is getting started. It will come. CAD is a tough subject no matter what the package.
Thanks a lot! I've been using CAD software like Fusion360, Creo, SolidWorks throughout my studies but now that I am graduated I no longer have access to Education Licenses. I was a bit overwhelmed by the "extra clicks" required by Free CAD but your tutorial already made it more natural for me to add constraints to my geometries! I am confident I'll manage to develop a good workflow thanks to your guide.
Playing catch up on the replies so sorry for the late response. First of all, congratulations on graduating :) Yes there is a bit of a difference and somewhat slower in workflow. But v1 that is coming out bring more tooling to make that faster, especially around the sketching. Glad your enjoying the videos and they are making it easier for you.

Great video and very clear narration, spoken at the right speed. I got caught out following this a few times with the precise steps that must be followed for External Geometry to apply to the top surface as the default is the bottom surface. Only until I realised the surface has to be selected first before starting a new sketch, so the sketch then applies only to that surface. Making a new save after every step saved a lot of time, when things stopped working, which they constantly do.

It's taken me three days to get through this video but I've done it and I'm really excited for the rest of the course. I've been in tech all my life and I've always learned by experience. Very helpful instruction. I was proficient with AutoCAD decades ago, and I've done a lot of isometric drafting, but am now learning about resolving geometrical constraints among other things - I presume this is a more "grown up" way of doing 3-D modelling - at first it seemed a bit confusing/restrictive, but now I'm starting to see the logic of it. Thank you for all the time/effort you put into producing these videos. And by the way, I appreciate your narrative style with good English enunciation that is easily understandable to my ears. Like yourself I used CAD before and made the move to freecad and realised how hard it was especially with very little to guide at the time so decided that I would make these tutorials and try to find a middle ground between complete beginner and "enough knowledge to be dangerous" lol. Yes, I agree wholeheartedly with the previous comments, the best tutorial on the tube! As a field Engineer training operators of highly technical machines not everyone is on the same level of absorption. I found that explaining the step of each process builds a foundation that simplifies the understanding of why each step has it's importance. People always want to take shortcuts! Of course that is what you did but it was as tutorial went along with the build. I feel I would have been bit easier if it was stated how each step was explained in progression first and why the it has to be that way, also showing each icon. Very good tutorial, just my thoughts!

This is a great tutorial, coming from some experience in Solidworks FreeCAD seemed abit baffling, but it seems to do what I need, Thank you, Saved hours of trying to install a less than legit copy of Solidworks in a VM.
Its been a while since I did Freecad, so I had to refresh my understanding. Thanks to Mango Jelly, I can do that. Really great beginning videos. Really like how he showed exporting to stl file two different ways. Helps me with my 3d printing. Just got a Prusa 4**, and love it.

Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial! I took a technical drawing class probably around 20+ years ago (where we also used some CAD software) and I thought I'd never use that stuff ever again. I am really thinking about getting a 3D printer, and I wanted to use FOSS software all the way to model something, ultimately to see and prove to myself if I can do this. Lots of people said FreeCAD is a pain (they also said that about Blender a long time ago if I recall), but just after even watching up to this tutorial, I feel like I understand what you're showing us and I can see the potential control and power it gives! Really amazing tutorial! And really appreciate how you communicate everything!

Both easier and more difficult, depending on what you're trying to do. I never thought I'd be trying to learn CAD at this stage so I can 3D print an adapter for my vacuum 😅
I started to use FreeCAD from 0.18 up to 0.19 now. I still have lot of messy to understand FC systematically. Your video (part 1 and part 2) is a MUST WATCH VIDEO for anyone like me who wants to self-learning FC deeply from beginning again. This video is the first one I watched with proper demonstration speed in detail and clear sound. Not only demonstration but also with step-by-step explanation of what you are doing and what will be happen next. I like this video very much. I'm new to FreeCAD, so this series is helping me a lot. I've had some experience with SolidEdge, so it feels very much like home in terms of general look, layout and work environment, but the user interface will take some figuring out and getting used to. Can't wait to get into Surfaces, that's always been my favorite in SE. Keep up the great work!
@@MangoJellySolutions Having fun indeed. I went ahead with extrusions through profiles, because I need those for a hobby project of mine - but otherwise I'm going through the tutorials in order. The one thing I'm struggling with is placing sketches on inclined planes. Planes parallel to the XYZ planes I've figured out, just modifying the coordinate parameter. The biggest difference so far is that in SE you tend to do a lot of things via clicking and dragging, and here it's more about menus and ticking items in lists.

You are a fantastic teacher. Thank You for taking the time to teach freecad. For those having issues with the final two fillets, reduce the size of the top fillets from the instructed 24mm to something around 15mm, then re-create your last fillets

I had to run this three times having got rather lost. I found it was due to missing a mouse click or clicking off the workpiece. However it was worth the effort and it cemented some of the methods in my mind. You explain it very comprehensively and clearly. Many thanks.

This has been a big help. I've overcome the initial frustration, and now I'm starting to make some slow progress. The toughest part has been the _body-origin-pad-pocket-sketch-etc_ tree. It's tough to know what to call that, and navigating it and understanding all of it is conceptually difficult. Slowly coming into focus.
Glad these are helping. Visualizing that operations create a history list can sometimes help to understand parametric design, and remember that the last operation is marked as the tip (little green arrow). I remember when I first started and it was very strange to me. Just remember we all started with this frustration at some point :) The hardest part is getting started. It will come. CAD is a tough subject no matter what the package.
Thanks a lot! I've been using CAD software like Fusion360, Creo, SolidWorks throughout my studies but now that I am graduated I no longer have access to Education Licenses. I was a bit overwhelmed by the "extra clicks" required by Free CAD but your tutorial already made it more natural for me to add constraints to my geometries! I am confident I'll manage to develop a good workflow thanks to your guide.
Playing catch up on the replies so sorry for the late response. First of all, congratulations on graduating :) Yes there is a bit of a difference and somewhat slower in workflow. But v1 that is coming out bring more tooling to make that faster, especially around the sketching. Glad your enjoying the videos and they are making it easier for you.
i'm excited for 1.0 version of freecad and this tutorial will be my foundation learning freecad.

Great video and very clear narration, spoken at the right speed. I got caught out following this a few times with the precise steps that must be followed for External Geometry to apply to the top surface as the default is the bottom surface. Only until I realised the surface has to be selected first before starting a new sketch, so the sketch then applies only to that surface. Making a new save after every step saved a lot of time, when things stopped working, which they constantly do.

It's taken me three days to get through this video but I've done it and I'm really excited for the rest of the course. I've been in tech all my life and I've always learned by experience. You are one of the few teachers that I've encountered where my brain can settle long enough to take in the information. Absolutely brilliant presentation. Once again thank you so much.

Very helpful instruction. I was proficient with AutoCAD decades ago, and I've done a lot of isometric drafting, but am now learning about resolving geometrical constraints among other things - I presume this is a more "grown up" way of doing 3-D modelling - at first it seemed a bit confusing/restrictive, but now I'm starting to see the logic of it.
Thank you for all the time/effort you put into producing these videos. And by the way, I appreciate your narrative style with good English enunciation that is easily understandable to my ears. (I'm in Kansas, USA.)

Like yourself I used CAD before and made the move to freecad and realised how hard it was especially with very little to guide at the time so decided that I would make these tutorials and try to find a middle ground between complete beginner and "enough knowledge to be dangerous" lol. Yes, I agree wholeheartedly with the previous comments, the best tutorial on the tube! As a field Engineer training operators of highly technical machines not everyone is on the same level of absorption. I found that explaining the step of each process builds a foundation that simplifies the understanding of why each step has it's importance. People always want to take shortcuts! Of course that is what you did but it was as tutorial went along with the build. I feel I would have been bit easier if it was stated how each step was explained in progression first and why the it has to be that way, also showing each icon. Very good tutorial, just my thoughts!

This is a great tutorial, coming from some experience in Solidworks FreeCAD seemed abit baffling, but it seems to do what I need, Thank you, Saved hours of trying to install a less than legit copy of Solidworks in a VM.

Its been a while since I did Freecad, so I had to refresh my understanding. Thanks to Mango Jelly, I can do that. Really great beginning videos. Really like how he showed exporting to stl file two different ways. Helps me with my 3d printing. Just got a Prusa 4**, and love it.

Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial! I took a technical drawing class probably around 20+ years ago (where we also used some CAD software) and I thought I'd never use that stuff ever again. I am really thinking about getting a 3D printer, and I wanted to use FOSS software all the way to model something, ultimately to see and prove to myself if I can do this. Lots of people said FreeCAD is a pain (they also said that about Blender a long time ago if I recall), but just after even watching up to this tutorial, I feel like I understand what you're showing us and I can see the potential control and power it gives! Really amazing tutorial! And really appreciate how you communicate everything!

@@MangoJellySolutions it's been over 20 years since I last dabbled with 3D graphics, modelling etc. CAD is so totally different though. Both easier and more difficult, depending on what you're trying to do.
I never thought I'd be trying to learn CAD at this stage so I can 3D print an adapter for my vacuum 😅
I started to use FreeCAD from 0.18 up to 0.19 now. I still have lot of messy to understand FC systematically. Your video (part 1 and part 2) is a MUST WATCH VIDEO for anyone like me who wants to self-learning FC deeply from beginning again. This video is the first one I watched with proper demonstration speed in detail and clear sound. Not only demonstration but also with step-by-step explanation of what you are doing and what will be happen next. I like this video very much. I am areadly subsribed the channel and will keep on following. Very expecting part 3 comming.

I've had some experience with SolidEdge, so it feels very much like home in terms of general look, layout and work environment, but the user interface will take some figuring out and getting used to. @@MangoJellySolutions Having fun indeed. I went ahead with extrusions through profiles, because I need those for a hobby project of mine - but otherwise I'm going through the tutorials in order. The one thing I'm struggling with is placing sketches on inclined planes. Planes parallel to the XYZ planes I've figured out, just modifying the coordinate parameter. The biggest difference so far is that in SE you tend to do a lot of things via clicking and dragging, and here it's more about menus and ticking items in lists.
