  • Welcome to the total beginners course to FreeCAD 0.20. This is a two part lesson where will practice our tracing skill in the form of a mini project. Using reference photos we will create a more complex part which will consist of repeating features that we will utilise symmetry tool to ease construction in both FreeCAD sketcher and Part Design workbench.
This project work will help teach the fundamentals of freeCAD understanding the basics but delivering via teaching you different workflows.

True: If just watch a tutorial, it looks so easy and intuitive that we do not feel the need to practice the lesson. But if we are asked to do it on our own, the mind goes blank!
      So practice is the key.
While we are doing it, we also come across new doubts and new possibilities.
If we watch these tutorials passively, it will never happen!

Version 0.21.1 got rid of the Image Workbench, the new way to add an image to the XY plane is File>Import>Select your file>Open. Once it's imported you select the image in the tree and under tasks you can change the plane, etc.
I haven't, however, been able to figure out how to scale the image.

    • @EquipoKing
      @EquipoKing 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It takes some time, but you can use the ruler tool to measure across the image, resize the image, delete the measurement, re-measure, etc until you can get pretty close to the size you are looking for.

I was obviously dicking around with the image too much trying to get it perfectly aligned when my sketch disappeared. I was at about 12 minutes into the video so I tried to delete the sketch but Freecad was misbehaving. So, I dumped the entire project reloaded Freecad and started again. This time I didn't worry so much as to alignment but focused on the constraints. Got the all green in the sketch and moved on. I loved this video, there was a real sense of accomplishment getting the polar pattern at the end. As usual a brilliant tutorial perfectly paced. Thank you so much.

Thanks for these videos. I had been using DesignSpark Mechanical until a week ago. I liked using DesignSpark but, when I last tried to use it, it locked me out of all of my models - it demanded that I update my account and download DesignSpark 6. Although this wasn't too difficult, I realised that DesignSpark could terminate my account at any time (or implement a paywall) and I would lose access to all of my models. It makes much more sense for me to use FreeCAD which will always be free since it's open source.
Your videos are really useful. I think I have a much greater understanding of FreeCAD after watching the first 5 videos. I was a little wary of using FreeCAD since everyone says that it's difficult, but I understand everything I have seen so far.

Great to hear you enjoy videos. The ability of freecad to add photos and scale then to a known scale is a great tool to have. I am not sure if I covered it in that video but a little tip is you can change the transparency of the image from freecad by clicking on it and going to the View tab. This makes life a lot easier when sketching with lighter backgrounds. I did the same at school learnt technical drawing and product design which got me into learning 3D from books and loved every minute of it. Great to have you on board and hope these videos and all the new stuff that's coming up helps you on your journey.

can you please explain more in depth how to read the DoF (degree of freedom) when you click on the number and they auto select, and how to fix them. i get them and dont know what to do with the information given by the application. great videos by the way

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yes no problems. If you had a single line without any constraints it will have 4 degrees of freedom. Clicking dof will highlight both points. One point can move on the x and y so 2 degrees. The other can do the same. Equalling 4 degrees. If you add a horizontal constraint you lock the points to be in line with the edge that connects them. So you have removed 1 degree of freedom. Point 1 can move in the x direction, but moving it in y will keep the two points in line so point 2 moves at the same time. So you now have 3 degrees. Clicking dof will still highlight the two point as they can move. Clicking on point 1 and locking it to the center point of the sketch now results in 1 degree as point 2 can only move along the x axis. Clicking dof now will only highlight point 2. Remember that being fully constrained is recommended but not necessary. Glad your enjoying the videos 😊

Found this channel few hours ago and seem pretty useful.
Im Blender artist over eight years and seems like some kind od mechanical conponent modeling is way more easier to do in FreeCAD using sketcher.
But for more organic shapes sketcher is nightmate. Is there way how to get desired shape without sketcher?
Curves are not super intuitive as well.
Is there way similar to subsurfacw modeling to get desired shapes? I know there is somethink like this in Fusion360, but can't find anything like this in FreeCAD.
Also I would like to see your way how to create sibmarone, airplane or that kind of models woth smooth shapes.

I know exactly what you mean about organic shapes. I have been involved in a project with one of my Patreons where we are creating an ergonomic grip. I have been using the Curves workbench and I have to say it's been a challenge to get the grip shaped. It requires palm and thumb swells that are moulded to the users hand. I have been using a loft through a series of freehand curves and getting the lateral shape using the mixed curve of the curves workbench. Lofts are your friend when you come to these kind of objects. Thanks for the comments, I have a project in mind that involves a submarine, I have a flooded quarry where I live and I want to build a remote control submarine to explor it and then thinking about building one in freecad then rigging it with the necessary mechanics and electronics, again lofts would be used for this kind of shape. Looks like I need to make some videos 😁

    • @MangoJellySolutions

When lines are not connected it means that you haven't constrained geometry together within a sketch correctly. And left them open. This is normally none by say clicking close to rather than on the end points when laying down connecting geometry. There is a tool in the sketcher called validate sketch which can highlight these troublesome areas. Thank you for the suggestion I am not sure if I have created a video but I am thinking of doing one which details how to deal with a number of errors that could occur.

Just wondering: At 3:55, we change the position of the image manually. But it requires a good judgment about where the center is. That is error-prone.
Instead, can we snap it accurately?
For example, I can draw a three-point circle that matches the tubular part fairly accurately. FC automatically creates the center of this circle. If I can constrain this center point of the circle to the origin, and make the image move along with the circle, I can achieve the centering perfectly.
    Is that possible?

Depends on the end result your looking for and any tollerances you want to incoperate for example 5mm holes are going to be dead on 5mm. So if you have something that fits exactly in those holes then you need to add remove a little so, say the pin will fit. Or if your replicating something exactly.

I tried a different approach to create this geometry:
    1. Created three concentric circles.
(The inner two circles are to create the wall of the cylindrical body, and the outer circle is to construct the ribs.)
    2. Drew 2 lines parallel to the x axis, on either side of it.
    3. Drew 2 lines parallel to the y axis, on either side of it.
My idea was to join the intersection points between the circles and the lines to create the four ribs.
(I would have trimmed off the rest of the outer circle.)
But I am unable to make the circle intersect with the lines.
I tried to add a point on the circle and tried to add "coincident" constraint to create an intersection between the circle and the line.
But that also does not work.
Why is this happening? What should I do?

There is a play list that holds all the parts. I thought I put a link to it in the description of each part, I will check the description in this video as I'm not sure if it's there.
