Got a bit lost in the beginning as it seems Image bench was depreciated after version 0.20.
In version .21.1+ you now need to go File -> Import, to select your image file and add it to the 3d workspace.
Double Click on the imported image in the left bar to access the Image Plane settings, this is where you can choose your plane.
To scale the image, use Calibrate to get the selector for the red line, as in the video.

You have to right click on the image in the tree view -> select "calibrate" at the bottom -> use the red line to set the width -> hit ok

The only downside to watching these videos is I'm now starting to question my design choices on previous parts I have modeled up on FreeCAD. Thanks for great pacing, no loud music and videos that actually implement the methods you talk about!

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +12

There's so many ways to get to the end goal. If you achieved your goal you have succeeded so haven't done anything wrong. Each way you learn something extra which is valuable. Questioning your previous route shows your really starting to understand the program. Thanks for coming along on the journey. No you won't get any loud music hear and I always try to use practical examples. If not I will follow up with one in another video. Unless I have a practical example then I can't remember it as I have no reasons why I need the information so my brain just gets rid of it.

FYI for anyone who has an issue with your outer lines appearing a different color (light blue in my case) and not showing up in the 3D view (almost like they are invisible). I realized later on that the newly created lines were set to "Geometry Construction Mode" (as mentioned @ 17:16). This button is a global toggle instead of a one-time action (which MangoJelly mentioned to at 18:00, but I didn't realize I necessarily had to untoggle it in the moment). Just select all your outer lines and toggle the "Geometry Construction Mode", and your lines should come back to life! Using version 0.21.2.

    Workflow:
IMAGE WORKBENCH - SKETCHER - PART DESIGN
    2:53
Image to be sketched should be clear with preferably with a 90° topdown view and without shadows
    3:19
New Document - START - IMAGE - CREATE IMAGE PLANE (creates a planar image in 3D space) - CHOOSE AN IMAGE FILE TO OPEN (image file preferably '.png' as it preserves transparency) - CHOOSE ORIENTATION (XY Plane)
    4:18
For accurate dimensions, the image needs a scale reference from IRL,
SCALE IMAGE PLANE - DISTANCE (mm) (Set the reference measurement which allows for the rest of model to be as per scale) - SELECT FIRST POINT (choose between two points that represent the actual measurement of the original model
    6:04
Verify the image scale by, MEASURE DISTANCE
    6:44
COMBO VIEW - MODEL - UNNAMED - IMAGEPLANE (selected) - CREATE A SKETCH - (pop-up) SKETCH ATTACHMENT - select the method to attach this sketch to selected object - DON'T ATTACH - CHOOSE ORIENTATION (XY Plane
    7:14
The image should be centrally aligned with the model canvas,
COMBO VIEW - MODEL - IMAGE PLANE (selected) - DATA (Tab) - PLACEMENT (nudge around with the axis until the image is relatively central)
    8:27
For better visibility between the image plane and the canvas
IMAGE PLANE (selected) - VIEW - TRANSPARENCY (as needed)
    9:41
CREATE A CIRCLE (Auto constraints activated, so as to centrally align it with the 00,00 coordinates) - drag out from the center point to the diameter required
    13:15
For PCD of the flange holes, sketch straight lines from the 00,00 coordinate to the flange circles center, angle the two flange holes by selecting both the lines, bonding them with the CONSTRAIN ANGLE (fix the angle of a line or the angle between two lines) and set the degree of angle require
    13:15
Make both the lines of equal length by selecting the. and clicking CONSTRAIN EQUAL
    16:15
Add a length to the line between the centre point and the flange hole's center by selecting the line and clicking CONSTRAIN VERTICAL DISTANCE (Fix the vertical distance between two points or line ends) - INSERT VERTICAL LENGTHS
    17:35
To only represent the sketch of the model, click SKETCH - SKETCH GEOMETRIES - TOGGLE CONSTRUCTION GEOMETRY, after selecting the lines that should not appear on the model
    18:40
To create the rounded vertices of the flange click,
ARC - CENTER AND END POINT (center point of flange hole as reference, drag out the arc-circle to match the image boundary, click on the where the ARC should begin and end as two points that match the image

Thank you for these tutorials. I have about 600 hours experience using OnShape and I am moving to FreeCad. These videos have been extremely helpful. Thank you. I respect the pace you are presenting the tools and techniques as well. You give them something new then let them repeat it a few times to help it sink in. I would like to see a follow up video that shows how to accomplish the same sketch but using Mirrors and Symmetry instead of repeating the same tasks to create the rest of the sketch. Just an idea but once I learned that in OnShape my design time was cut by about a third. Since the FreeCad "Symmetry" tool doesn't automatically add the Symmetric Constraint to the Points it takes a bit longer but it is still a faster approach that requires less brain power.
EDIT: I see the next video is using polar pattern. I like that. However, I still think that using Symmetric tools in the Sketch is also worth knowing. (My opinion.) Great job. Love your work.

    • @dniezby
      @dniezby ปีที่แล้ว

@@roofoofighter I think one of the lessons was how to get the proper scale from photo. However, even if you were to import the image that way, you could still resize it to view in which case, you'd need to know how to set the proper scale so you can draw at any zoom level.

IMHO it is possible to shorten this workflow:
      1. Draw a circle in the center using the "3 rim point" tool.
(This method automatically matches the circle to the image. We don;t have to guess its center.)
      2. Construct three construction lines 120° apart, which pass through the center on BOTH sides.
(extending the line to the other side is useful to create the geometry on the other side)
      3. Draw one corner first:
3a. Draw the small circle. Its center lies on the construction line.
3b. Trace the two straight lines on the part, and let them intersect at the construction line.
(The two straight lines form a "V" at the corner.)
      4. Repeat step#3 for the other two corners.
      5. Now we have three Vs at the three corners.
These 6 lines intersect at 6 places.
Create fillets at all these six places. Adjust the fillets to roughly match the part.
      6. Add constraints to make the fillets symmetrical around the construction lines.
      7. Add dimensions to fillets and circles to match the part.

I got a bit stuck on the arc on the lower right corner. It was over constraint after adding the symmetry constraint to the arc. Probably my FreeCad is a newer version and more strict (I followed every click). I just did not add symmetry constraints on the left and right arcs. Instead I added a coincidence constraint to the center of the bottom arc (coincidence to the vertical axis).
    Then it was fully contrained

If anyone also had a problem with setting up symmetry constraints to arcs - I have found another solution, which for me worked fine.
Draw a line between both ends of an arc. Select this new line and the respective construction geometry line (like with symmetry constraint) and add perpendicular constraint. Repeat for all three arcs. Select these three lines and add equal constraint. After that convert them to construction geometry.

  • @PaulLemars01

Once again thank you so much for your hard work. I'm beginning to understand the underlying logic of the software. This is a far more accurate way of designing. I was watching a youtuber doing almost exactly the same as this tutorial. He was replicating a broken plate for a laser engraver in Fusion360 and while his process was quicker it was obvious that he wasn't as accurate as this lesson. He had to iterate a number of times because of hole placement. It seems that Freecad forces you to think cleanly. As a treat to myself I printed out this gasket in TPU. I can state unequivocally your channel is the best there is for training Freecad. I am both terrified and looking forward to Episode 4.
BTW just a tiny thing, maybe because the update to 0.20.2 but right at the end when I created a body in Part Design the sketch jumped into the correct place automatically. No dragging needed.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Fusion 360 is quite forgiving it will allow you to carry on when if there is an error but, as you say, freecad forces you to do it correctly, a bit like a old school teacher waiting for you to do something wrong ready to hit you with a ruler lol. Glad your enjoying the videos and finding them useful.

@21:52 when I tried this for the vertical line, I used the vertical axis (not the vertical construction line) as the reference and the symmetrical constraint was redundant , after deleting a constraint it worked, but for the other two arcs when I try to use the symmetric constraint with the other two construction lines as reference it pulls out the same redundant constrain error and asks me to delete the symmetric constraint....

Finding you videos much easier to follow than others I tried. I did have trouble towards the end setting symmetrical constraint on the corner arcs. It would mark them as 2 over-constraints. Rotating the sketch slightly would remove one over-constraint and rotating it back would put it back again. It would then break the sketch with some points no longer coincident. I was about to give up but saw @moonlyr's comment about putting a chord across the arcs, constraining it as perpendicular, then marking the chords as construction geometry. That worked a treat. Not sure what caused this. I also can't find how to get circle centre marks, crosshairs. like you have. To be honest I am struggling to get all the dimensions to format consistently, number of decimal places, units etc. Thanks for efforts I will continue to watch and learn.

22:30 - I have followed the instructions at least 8 times and every time i apply the Tangent constraint I get "Over-Constrained: (6,21,22)", 6 and 21 both are regarding the constraints applied to the bottom right circle, i have tried redoing this 8 times and even tried deleting those constraints which then everything goes out of whack, I'm not sure if its just something I'm missing or something which is different in version 0.21.1, any guidance would be helpful TIA

These are some fantastic tutorial videos, very precise, step by step instructions, clearly explained, and demonstrated.
My only issue is, occasionally, I can't seem to find certain options to select. Not sure if this is because I am currently running Ver. 0.21.2 and most of these tutorials are Ver. 0.20, or because I am on an iMac (M3, Sonoma 14.4.1 OS), or perhaps it's because I am a blind newbie. (Most likely a combination of the three)
Anyway, great videos, I really am learning a lot.

Yes there are some small differences between 0.20 and 0.21 that can be figured out but worth this one there is a big difference, and that is the image workbench is no longer available. Great little video, but surely there's an easier way to do this?
I'm from a more traditional 3D background and we never model more of something symmetrical than we have too. So in this case it should be enough to model 1/6 of the model and mirror the rest right using first mirror to get to 1/3 then radial array copy or what it's called in FreeCad?

    • @MangoJellySolutions

You can use symmetry and patterning to your advantage and create a polar array. I did think about going down this route but it was too early in the course to do so as it would of made more questions and I was concerned I was going to deep to soon.

I found the best way to draw the outline was to add circles and then lines with tangent constraints and then trim away the unwanted parts of the circle

    • @xrysf03
      @xrysf03 ปีที่แล้ว

My word Tony, I definitely second that. Plus, there is another sweet little bit that I haven't noticed mentioned yet, in this series: *construction geometry*! Allows you to draw lines that you can constrain on (such as those 120degree angles, together with the equidistant centers of circles and arcs) and those helper lines get ignored when padding into 3D, and therefore during the padding operation, FreeCAD doesn't bitch about the helper lines ruining the continuity of the surface ("wire is not closed"). Construction geometry is very useful for "scaffolding" constraints that you cannot stick directly onto the "production outline" geometry.
Ehh not sure if maybe I just didn't listen close enough. I'm watching this "on the back burner" at work and at home, often while doing some mundane manual chores.
To me as a hobbyist, after past experience with Sketchup and LibreCAD, today FreeCAD and parametric solid modeling is a shiny new mental toy. I love this, the meshed constraints set my mind racing. Thanks @MangoJelly for this tutorial series!
