  • In part 7 of the total beginners course to FreeCAD 0.20 we learn how to create more complex objects easily with the revolve and sweep workflows to create control dials such as a cooker control knob. This will be the start of a number of tutorials that teach the fundamentals and practice examples of these operation in both the part design and part workbench where we start to learn why we would use on over the other.
    In this course we teach the fundamentals of freeCAD using the basics but delivering via teaching you different workflows.
    Our aim to teach you freeCAD in a practical way.

    As someone who studied drafting back in high school, I always found it difficult to transition to CAD software. Initially the cost, and secondly learning the tool paradigm.
    FreeCAD and your tutorials have really opened my options for the future. Thank you.

      We had AutoCAD. Mid nineties. The teacher introduced one student to it and they taught the next student, and so on. It is amazing how teaching a subject helps reinforce it for yourself. I was offered, and did use, DataCAD (CadKey, iirc).

    watched a few of your videos - you are saving me a lot of time I would have spent on figuring out stuff. your explanations contain just the right amount of detail for me and i like that you go through different options of doing things while pointing out the differences and thus suggesting what is used best for which task. making videos consumes a lot of time so thank you very much for all the effort. keep up the good work and I wish you much more subscriptions - you would really deserve that.

      Thank you for such kind words and donation. I really appreciate feedback like viewers like yourself have given and I always try to feed this back into my videos if anything needs adjustment or something is not working. Without knowing I don't grow and improve myself. Thank you once again and it's great to see your progressing.

    I'm using Rev0.21. For the life of me I can't seem to configure the settings so the 'Edit Controls' box is visible. I finally found the drop down box where Auto Constraints/Avoid Redundant Auto Constraints can be checked. But this must me one of those 'intuitive' things. That's where software updates hide things that take forever to find. Unfortunately I haven't used this software enough to consider myself a native user like I am with AutoCAD. I was using that back in the DOS era.

      @@MangoJellySolutions yes, it also has an internal M12 thread to screw it on the lever. I am not sure I can pull it off as I have invested a lot of time into Blender which gives me other possibilities for other kinds of projects. Welcome to the channel 😊. To answer your question yes you are correct. This could be done in a number of ways (as usual with CAD packages, a hundred and one ways to do the same thing) so you could do one of the following: draft wb clone and modify the scale, part design sub shape binder and offset, sketch carbon copy and tweak the sketch. There are probably a number I have missed but that gives you a few. Each have their advantages and disadvantages.

    Isn't it important to get fully constrained sketch before we close the sketch window?

    • @MangoJellySolutions

      It's important but not essential. I normally do in modeling but to keep the lessons a little shorter I sometimes skip over this for some demonstrations.

    Tried several times. Could not get the dial indicator to come out. Does not merge into the profile of the smaller tab. Also, I could not draw the second tab correctly on the proper face. my XY plane was at the end of the cone and I had to move it back to the proper plane. I'm sure they are related, but I'm stymied at this point.

    I love freecad, but it's frustrating to edit a chain of attached objects. If there are ANY changes in a sketch at the top (even a simple movement or dimensional re-constraint), it can often break downstream attachments despite the same surfaces existing.
    I spend most of my time trying to avoid this with a careful use of a scaffolding datum planes and sketches (rather than attachment to surfaces), and editing breaks when editing an upstream feature.
    A bit more consistency would be a god-send.

      @christopherkecun8349 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard to describe. A repeating revolve maybe?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a fan of tesla (and Esher) I was thinking about doing a video about modelling some of his inventios, I forgot about this one. Each valve could be repeated in seperate whole sections and joined together as clones so you build the section as one and then boolean them together.

  • @leroycasterline1122
    @leroycasterline1122 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Out of curiosity, why not use the cross-section rather than redrawing it? I cheated, retaining the cross-section and using it to create the new sketch, which seemed to work perfectly. One difference between my project and yours - the Revolve was created outside the body rather than within it. The sketch I created is within the body and the body was active when I did the rotation. Perhaps this is because I'm using 0.20.1 rather than 0.20?

    • @leroycasterline1122
      @leroycasterline1122 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I revisited this again today, and did it exactly the same as you did, deleting the cross-section and redrawing by hand. The result was the same; my Revolve was created outside the body. The only difference is that I'm using 0.20.1 and you're using 0.20, so that seems to be it.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure how that's happening. Revolves in part design should always be in a body as they are automatically fused to your main body. Do you have the file at all that you could send me? Its a real strange one. Is the sketch inside the body when you start?

    • @leroycasterline1122
      @leroycasterline1122 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MangoJellySolutions When you look at the file, you'll see a number of ReferenceRevolve's. I think I had to do this because the initial revolve isn't in the body.
      Strangely, I didn't have to do this in my first attempt (in which I used the cross-section rather than drawing the sketch from scratch) even though the Revolve wasn't in the body in that project either.

    2nd tutorial vid I'm watching to revolve a simple rectangle around the Z-axis, and nothing works.
    My sketch is fully defined. It will only sweep it around the X-axis, no matter what I do. Any other choice and there's just nothing.
    IDK what I've missed, but these vids seem to take something for granted that I can't figure out.

    • @MangoJellySolutions

      If you select the top face of where you want the pocket and create a arc and close it with a line then this will create the D your looking for, from there you can pocket the shape.

    • @Sembazuru
      @Sembazuru 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know about Mango Jelly, but I'm right handed and seem to have fallen into sketching my revolves on the left. I assumed that the reason why is I read left to right, but it might just be based on where one started learning revolves and got familiar doing them.

    Seeing someone casually adding sketches to faces is confusing when all of the other tutorials I watched so far told me to avoid this unter all circumstances … 😆

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's not something to avoid, it's something to be aware of as you can go back and fix the problems. It is defacto CAD practice which I follow in the videos. The problems what people talk about is the TNP issue. But, not all problems are TNP and it often it gets miss diagnosed. In any package if you delete a face / edge you will get an error if you anything attracted to it and you will have to reattach the sketch / geometry. But with Freecad we have the additional issue of faces sometimes being renamed after a change which in near future releases this is going to be fixed. Attaching to faces is usual practices. You be missing out most of the CAD world if you try to avoid it.
