If someone is struggling to make ruled surfaces on 17:50 (created surfaces between ellipse arcs is overlapping with the main shape dent), then you have to click on newly created ruled surfaces and go to data and set Orientation field to Forward.
Before reading this, my solution was to use edges from the sketch then mirror that ruled surface. While not as correct or elegant an approach, this still though got to the compound and solid result. Thank you for the advice toward a better and more correct solution.
Hi MJ, Really enjoying the Tut's. Starting to appreciate the ins and outs of FreeCAD. Did give Fusion 360 a Go but the limitations on workspace lost Me. I'm an Aero modeller and wish to design my own and Scale RC Aircraft . I can see FreeCAD being very useful. Keep up the Good work.
Great to hear! There is a lot of RC and aero engineers using freecad out in the field. Check out @LVAeronautics on Twitter who are in the middle of a very complex project. Great to hear your progressing.
13:00 No need to extrude the body, it is enough to create a surface to also reflect it. And further according to the instructions. + The bottom surfaces will already be created for the Compound.
I had no idea that it was possible to do this or that there was something called the Surface workbench. I need to grow some new brain cells in my hippocampus or something so I can incorporate all this! ;) Another great video. Thanks!
Lol, yes the software has alot to offer and trying to remember it all is starting to even get hard for me lol. I am working on something to make remembering some of it a little bit easier. I have scrapped it and started it again about 3 times but hopeful I have got it this time.
Hi, MJ. Thank you for these tutorials. If you're still reading these: @ around 5:50 when trying to cut the sphere into the compound, the face where the sphere is turns glitchy and the sphere doesn't cut into the body, it only cuts itself and even then, a part of it still remains outside of the body. This does not happen when using a different shape, like a cilinder or a cone. Is this a glitch or am I doing something wrong?
@@eddyproft8390 Same, same problem, same version. It is as though there is still a face set to visible, but all items in the tree are set as they should be.

Your tuts are clear and concise. I have downloaded FreeCad 0.21 but cannot find the Image workbench. Please assist me in this regard. Many thanks Barry
The Image Workbench is no longer included after version 0.20. You can import an image using File -> Import... Once imported, you can scale and manipulate the image.
If you want more information regarding the new way of importing and scaling reference images I have put together a video th-cam.com/video/WhxDAgskcHA/w-d-xo.html
V0.21.2 Having an issue at 15:40 The boundary edges list looks correct except when I select extrude edge and extrude edge.mirror. the surface does not appear. IF I OK the filling window I get an invalid object Boundary edges must be added in consecutive order. I'll delete it all and restart but something somewhere has upset it :(
ok back in extrude/sketch. One of the arc points was not constraint point to object, not sure why that would cause this but all I did was delete back to the original sketches and rebuild from there.
This might be a nomenclature thing, but when I think "surfaces", I think of finish surfaces. Is there a way to pattern the surface we've just created? ie Wood grain or mesh or whatever?
The Arc of Elipse is unstable or I am not understanding how it works. It's jumpy and does not want to allow movement from a circle to an oval with the control points. Anyone else?
I have the same problem. I just did a half circle and fallowed the steps starting @ 7:28 to shape it. I also found that I didn't have the problem when selecting the x axis first and the y axis second. So if you don't mine having a different frame of reference than MJ, that might be an option too.
I solved it by turning off snapping. In the Sketcher mode, turn off Snap to Grid and Snap to Objects, or turn them all off by toggling the whole Toggle Snap. It's the button to the right of the green tic-tac-toe (the grid button), the one with a grid and cursor shape.
Great video! I have some problem when creating the 2 ruled surface that connect the two domes: instead of filling just the empty space between the selected edges of the two domes the resulting surface actually fills all the space enclosed in the edge of the outer dome. I noticed that creating a sketch with 2 unconnected arcs of 2 concentric ellipses I get the same problem (a ruled surface covering al the space enclosed by the external arch), while closing the shape with a couple of lines that connects the endpoints of the ellipses gives the expected result. Any idea about what I'm doing wrong? Again ....wonderful videos! ❤
Me and Marco have been working on this today so just updating the comment in case anyone else comes across the same problem. The problem in the end was due to the orientation property on the ruled which as default is as set to automatic. We changed this to forward and this resolved the issue. So it's worth changing the orientation property before you go in and start redrawing geometry etc.
I have a strange issue with Extrude. Each time FreeCAD is creating 2 extrudes. I solve deleting one of them. I have not clue if it's a problem with my system, or whether or not there is a setting to change.
At 17:54 My ruled surface is glitching and surfacing half of the outer ellipse instead of between the two chosen lines. I am becoming frustrated with FreeCADs "quirks"
@@MangoJellySolutions Forward orientation is what I needed. I also need to learn to check things like that when I come across strange results. Thank you again
Strangely, when I completed the 2nd part of the lesson, I was able to cut the sphere out of the solid. Hiding the compound before doing the cut did not work on the object created in the 1st part of the lesson.
Does it get twisted? If so go to the properties of the ruled surface in the data tab and change the orientation to reverse it forward. Glad your learning new skills 😊
Adjusting Selection sensitivity in Preferences helps. I've found One needs to be very careful that you select the correct Vertices etc, I zoom in a lot to be sure. Hiding Objects in the tree that are redundant also makes it clearer.
While I find it easy to understand, it's retaining how to use all these various tools becomes the challenge. And to think there are people out there that have total recall. Wouldn't that be nice.
