The best gunky greasy, oil remover that I've found and used to clean engines, engine bays is heavy duty oven cleaner. Spray it on, let it do its job and rinse it off with water. Do NOT get the oven cleaner on anything painted unless you want the paint removed!

Hey Brett, It's great to see a young man learning to wrench. We need more kids interested in wrenching and be willing to learn. In a few years there aren't going to be anyone with knowledge and be willing to do this stuff. Swapping motors and putting things where they were never suppose to go takes experience which there is only one way to gain. Thanks for sharing. Later

Since my body quit before I wanted to, I live through the fingers of others working on these LS engines. Its not really sure what goes on under the lifter valley cover but I have seen engines not get the full oil pressure because of something in the valley that gets a O ring gasket or something that you would know about... this person had done a quick overhaul and under that valley was a o ring that was not the full size and so it let oil spray under the cover instead of holding pressure resulting in like twenty five pounds of oil pressure when turning two thousand RPM's and almost nothing at a idle... fixed the problem and oil pressure was seventy five and twenty five at a low idle. I am also not seeing the oil pump pickup in the reassembly so figure more is coming for this engine.... loving everything being done... its great to trade labor for stuff because its a win for everyone.

OK Brent! Another fantastic video. You gave Ryder some very valuable mentoring and got a whole lot of things done even though it was touch-n-go there at the beginning. It looks like the wxr is beginning to cool down a bit for you and you were able to enjoy a little outdoor mechanicing. I was quite amazed by how quickly you walked right thru the cam replacement. It reminded me of a time when I first moved out of my folks house and my old neighbor whom I helped move out when he retired from being a plumber after 45yrs, came over to my rented house and walked right thru my oil fired furnace to return the favor. He just did like you did w/ that LS, he just set the spark gap with a nickel, put in a new nozzle and adjusted the A/F by looking at the flames licking around the edge of the firebox. In about 30 or 40 mins he was done and I didn't have a lick of trouble with that furnace for the whole next 2yrs I lived there. There's just nothing like watching a pro apply his trade. Great going Brent. Thank you for taking the time to video everything, edit it and put it up on the net. Can't wait for the next one. ben/ michigan

I buy oven cleaner to clean the block. It is cheap at the dollar store and work well and is environmentally ok. The water neutralizes the caustic nature of the cleaners. be careful with the fumes and your eyes. Two cleanings with oven cleaner and last with degreaser the engine is usually pretty clean.

Those cam retainer covers should be replaced every time you remove them, the gaskets aren’t reusable like most gaskets on the LS, I’m not sure if you put a new one on or not, but they will loose all your oil pressure if the leak, my buddy found that out the hard way

Came to say the same thing. I use the dollar store stuff. Foam it up, let it soak, work the bad/thick bits with a chip brush from said dollar store, foam it again, let it sit a bit more then blast it off with your pressure washer. I rinsed mine with water in an old paint gun in my garage last winter cause it was too cold outside. Used less than a gallon of water to rinse the entire engine and you could pretty much eat off it after that.

I don't know if yall have purple power degreaser in Canada but if not order you a case of it. It will degrease a engine frames anything you spray it on. Works better than anything else i have tried. My s10 frame was horrible with grease and it was clean enough for paint afterwards. Just let it sit and cut through the grease. Sometimes you have to do a second spraying but it will not leave much behind. And your wife can use it for your clothes too it'll take oil and grease out and off everything.
