I met Charley Pride, more than once. He and his wife Rozene were always so kind, just lovely lovely people. The reaction you just had, was the same reaction Webb Peirce had more than 50 years ago when Charley was trying to break into the record business. An artist named Red Sovine brought Mr. Pride up to Webb Pierces office and had him sing a song for Mr. Pierce, Charley sang his song and then Mr. Pierce says to him "OK, now sing one in your REAL voice"... Charley says "What are you talking about, this is my real voice"!!!! The rest is history! Charley Pride is one of RCA records top selling artists of all time, second only to Elvis Presley. He passed away of Covid a few days ago, and let me tell you something, the world has lost a TRUE GEM of a man. Charley Pride was one of the best EVER. The first album that they released on Charley Pride, they didn't put his photo on the cover. They hid the fact that he was black, the label was unsure if a black man would be accepted by country fans at that time, but his producer knew that if they just heard his music they would LOVE him... and he was right. Charley toured after his first hit, and said the first time he walked out on stage the people were cheering, then they saw him, and it was dead silent. Nobody knew he was black... Charley says "Hi I am Charley Pride and I bet ya'll didn't know I was going to come out here with the permanent tan"!!! The audience laughed and cheered and have LOVED him ever since. For a good number of years everything that he touched turned to gold!! The world just lost a true legend.
Don't let negative posts get you. You're doing great with all the genres of music. Charlie is a great country singer. This music goes deep and sounds off the experiences of life be it sorrow or happiness or even comical. Great reaction video.
Charlie Pride is a Country Legend . Charley Frank Pride (born March 18, 1934) is an American singer, musician, guitarist, business owner, and former professional baseball player. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he became the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. He wrote and produced songs for Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Ray Stephens, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley and Tom Jones. By chance (I don't do country) I recently saw an interview he did back in 2012. He mentioned that the black community gave him shit about singing country but not one of his country peers ever said anything harsh to him and he did not receive negativity from the white community like Jackie Robinson experienced. With 3 Grammy awards, an induction into the Grand Ole Opry and a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, he is the only black country superstar.
Same here. My Dad loved the music of both these men & I grew up listening to them. Hearing Charlie brings both a smile to face & a tear to my eye. I really miss my beautiful Dad ✌️
So happy to see this when I checked in tonight. I've loved this song and the legendary Charlie Pride as long as I can remember. I'm 55 so that's a long time.
When I was growing up, my mom had over 300 albums, and Charlie Pride was among her all time favorites ❤️. I just love this man!! What an American Icon the the Country & Western community. Believe it or not when he first was introduced on the radio waves, everyone in this time era thought and believed that they were listening to a white man singing, they were absolutely shocked and surprised that this amazing singer was a black man!! It just didn't matter, everyone loved this man's singing voice, and the man himself, He was and still is a wonderful gentleman, and an overall great human being. Thank you Mr. Pride for all of the great memories you made for me as a child!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Much Love!!! Thanks Jay for the upload of the great Country Singer...
I'm 63 yrs old and grew up with my mom listening to country music. Charlie Pride was playing often on our radio. He is a great singer, a good man and a country music legend.
Charlie Pride had a string of country hits as long as your leg, at a time when most black singers were doing R&B, Soul, or Jazz. If you want to react to more country music, you might try Kaw-Liga, Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone, You're So Good When You're Bad by Charlie Pride.
Shocker coming 😁. Grew up with Charlie....he's amazing. Check out some Ronnie Millsap also. Brilliant piano man and country singer that just happens to be blind from birth. You aren't the first and won't be the last 😏
Huge fan and made respect! Charlie was working on a plantation in Mississippi and the owner heard his talent when he would sing to the workers at the end of the day. The Owner called a music executive in Nashville, many times, until he finally agreed to come out and hear Charlie. The Executive took Charlie back to Nashville with him and he was a hit maker, very much accepted by the Country music community...this was the early 1960’s. Charlie is a stand-up Man, never forgetting where he came from and the good fortune he had that day. Every Body Loves Charlie!
I don't think people nowadays realize how much of HUGE star to both Black and White audiences, Charley Pride was in the 60's and 70's. Even during the days of Jim Crow and segregation. Charley Pride was the second best selling artist of all time for RCA records. Second only to a fellow by the name of Elvis Presley...
Charlie is one of the top legends. My first record was a charlie pride 45 bought for me by my dad when I was 6 in 1973. It had snakes crawl at night on it.
One of the reasons you are one of my favorite *reactors* is that You introduce me to music I would not usually listen to. As a result I’ve added new music to my playlist.
I grew up in a VERY small town in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. We only got 2 tv stations and no radio back then. I got my love for music from a jukebox. My family owned a little diner and whenever I was at the diner, I was playing music. Charlie Pride was one of my favorite country artists but imagine my surprise when I got my first record player and went to buy some records...LOL. There was Charlie Pride smiling at me from the cover of his album and he was black. I was blown away, believe me. I bought that album and many more after that. I always tell people that music raised me and taught me how to be a lady and how to love. Great reaction!!
I think Charlie is part owner of the Texas Rangers. He actually was a great pitcher in the negro leagues until an injury, that's when he turned to music. He has been married to his "Angel" for over 60 years! He is such a genuine man & is loved by so many. His music is simple, but heartfelt & that's why we love him so much! His personality is carried through into his songs...you can here his sincerity & you can feel his heart : ) I LOVE his songs..."Let The Chips Fall", "I'm So Afraid Of Losing You Again", "It's Gonna Take A Little Bit Longer", "All I Have To Offer You Is Me" & "Crystal Chandeliers"
I watched a documentary on his life on PBS not long ago. He's led a very interesting life. He was even on his way to a career in professional baseball. This was the name of the doc"AMERICAN MASTERS Charley Pride: I’m Just Me" Well worth the watch.
My favourite song of his is "Does my ring hurt your finger". My mom loved that song in the late 70s. Love all your reviews! Your smile is infectious and makes these covid days brighter. 😀
Charlie Pride is one of the greats :) He is Country music royalty :). When I was a kid I heard Charlie often as he was one of my parents favorite singers . They are both gone now and every time I hear this song I have those bittersweet memories of a time that I wish I could go back to . Thank you for checking out Charlie Prides music :). This one brought a tear to my eye . I really appreciate your videos ✌️
Rest in heavenly slumber Mr. Charley Pride,,, a HUGE loss for Country music and the World. He died from complications from COVID-19 at the age of 86. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the CMAs this year. Kiss an angel good morning...
I had the absolute honour of meeting Mr Charlie Pride 20 years ago after seeing him play live in Australia. He was playing the pokies after the concert. He was such a gentleman and signed our booklet. He was happy to chat for a couple of minutes. I will always treasure that memory. 💜
He’s such an awesome country singer. My parents loved playing country music whilst I was growing up - such memories. Another fantastic song of his is Crystal Chandeliers!!!
I love Charlie. My mom was a big fan and had his records, so I grew up listening to him. As a kid I didn't even realize that being a black country artist was a big deal back in the day. But he was a breakthrough back in the early 60's. I just enjoyed his songs.
I was watching Hee Haw, in 1969, with my family, when we first saw Charlie Pride. We sat there amazed at how good he was. We all became fans that night. He has one of my all time favorite Christmas albums, as well as his full body of work. My mother saw him live, many years later. All she could say, was how great he was.
I remember my mom & I singing this in the car all the time~lol~ It was everywhere back in the day~I like classic country~ artists as an adult,I can now appreciate more. Like Loretta Lynn(the Coal Miner's daughter)~ "The Pill" was a groundbreaking record from a woman with a 6th grade education who had her first kid at 14!
He had a perfect voice, for this type of song. The man was basically born to do it. Lovely warm gentle voice. I should add, our man is still singing at the age of 86, believe or not.
You should listen to: Charlie Rich - Rolling with the flow, Lee Greenwood- God Bless the USA, George Strait - Amarillo by Morning & Marina Del Rey, Dennis DeYoung - Desert Moon
Love Charlie Pride! His voice caught me when I heard my mother listening to him in the 70s. I have like 3 or 4 of his CDs. I especially like his “I’m Just Me”. Great song! ❤️🎵
When I was growing up mom used to take me to see all the County artist when they came to town. Charlie is someone I seen a few times. You used to be able to go backstage after shows to meet the artist, say hi and get your pic taken with them. So I have a few pics with him and some lovely words with his autographs. Really lovely man.
Some of my favourite country artists: Loretta Lynn (and her stuff with Conway Twitty)- I suggest "You Ain't Woman Enough (to Take My Man)" to get you started Faron Young- "Hello Walls" is a good introduction to his style Hank Williams Sr.- "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" is a personal fave Johnny Cash- try "Sunday Morning Coming Down" George Jones -"Wino the Clown" is one of only two songs that always makes me cry Tammy Wynette- "Stand By Your Man" is a total classic Jim Reeves- "The Blizzard" tells a wonderful but sad story Patsy Cline- I love "She's Got You" Ernest Tubb- "Walking the Floor Over You" is one of his best Johnny Horton- a lot of his stuff centers around deep dives into historical figures, battles and causes, but some of it comes down on the wrong side of history, so be warned. "The Battle of New Orleans" gives a great overview of his style
Broke my heart when he passed away. Charley was so much of my growing up years. My mom used to play and sing all his songs. Crystal Chandelier is an awesome song!
I really loved your reaction. I've listened to him all my life , his voice is one of a kind. He's iconic! No one else like him.! He's been around since 50's or 60S. As a little girl I've always loved his. He passed in 2020 from covid . What a lose.
Legend for sure my momma raised me on him in the 70's...and im a rocker but i know talent and he definitely had all that...rip and kiss the angels good morning...u will never be forgotten...
Charlie broke the barriers of country music. When DJ's found out he was black, in the 1960s, they refused to play his music. It was so satisfying when he he was inducted into the Country Hall of Fame. I grew up hearing his voice and it is amazing.
My grandmother loved Charlie Pride , they said people did think he was white when heard voice. but I took her to see him when I got to be an adult and thi man put on such a great show , hes a legend Her favorite song by him Was ALL I have to Offer you is me. its beautiful song and Kawlagi , I loved that one as a kid
Charlie was one of the best. First black member of Country Music Hall of Fame. COVID got him a few weeks ago and country music...no...THE WHOLE WORLD OF MUSIC lost a legend.
My dad said that when Charlie first came out, a lot of folks thought he was white. It was the days of consuming music primarily through radio. It was a shock to many folks, like it was to you, that he was black. I always enjoyed his music and don't care what color his skin is.
I haven't heard this song in probably 30 years, but as soon as the song started playing, I sang along and actually remembered all the words! I grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and every year at our rodeo/county fair, some of the biggest names in music play the fair. Charlie Pride used to be an almost annual part of the fair back in the day, so I got to see him live MANY times and he puts on a great show. You need to also check out Is Anybody Goin' To San Antone (which obviously always brought the house down at the fair) and my personal favorite Kaw-Liga.
Charlie was always on our stereo while I was growing up. This is how backwards the town I grew up in was.... For most of my childhood, it didn't have a person of color in it. Charlie Pride came into the music scene in the late 50's, early 60's. My parents bought one of this albums. Well, when anyone came over to visit my parents would throw Charlie's album on and say to the people visiting, "He's black! He doesn't sound it, does he?" As a child I was most put off by their exclamation.... but I certainly grew to love Charlie's voice. He was a professional baseball player before he went into music! Thanks for your reaction, Jay..... take care and be well. Peace.
I grew up listening to him. Loved his voice. Here's one I didn't see mentioned but was another favorite of my parents and uncles. Earl Thomas Conley, Holding Her And Loving You. That's one of my favorites by him. Dad had it on 8 track years ago.
I would wake up to Charlie Pride, Jim Reeves, Slim Dusty and few others when I was young in the 1970s. My old dad's Sunday routine. Brings back good memories, simple times, simple needs.
Adore Charlie Pride.....my dad proposed to mum playing 'all I have to offer you is me' Love Don Williams too, she played 'your my best friend' at his funeral, you may want to look those songs up ❤️
Going back & catching up on some of your earlier reactions. Charlie Pride is wonderful singer. I am so glad that you are completely open to all genre's.
Mister pride is my favorite country music singer he,s got a lotta great songs my parents had all of his albums so I grew up with him love him so much one of my favorites is burgers and fries and cherry pies it,s a slow one but I love the lyrics try to do it if you git a chance or listen at home peace to you.😇🙏
Charlie Pride is not a Country & Western singer; Charlie Pride is a Country & Western LEGEND. He's in the C & W Hall of Fame and still performs (and sounds good) today at age 86. (I know...I saw him perform live in February of this year).
My mom and dad were country music performers when I was growing up and they performed this song as part of their repertoire. Mom fell in love with Charlie Pride in 68'. Didn't care one iota that he was black.
Charley Pride was singing country music back in the 1960's. He has passed away now but he was one of the best and probably the first black person to sing country. I have always been a fan. He is the best! That was his signature song.
He’s always presented himself as a gentleman. A genuinely nice man. That voice is iconic. He was a trail blazer and this song always makes me smile
You just described him perfectly. Cheers

Some of my favourite country artists:
Loretta Lynn (and her stuff with Conway Twitty)- I suggest "You Ain't Woman Enough (to Take My Man)" to get you started
Faron Young- "Hello Walls" is a good introduction to his style
Hank Williams Sr.- "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" is a personal fave
Johnny Cash- try "Sunday Morning Coming Down"
George Jones -"Wino the Clown" is one of only two songs that always makes me cry
Tammy Wynette- "Stand By Your Man" is a total classic
Jim Reeves- "The Blizzard" tells a wonderful but sad story
Patsy Cline- I love "She's Got You"
Ernest Tubb- "Walking the Floor Over You" is one of his best
Johnny Horton- a lot of his stuff centers around deep dives into historical figures, battles and causes, but some of it comes down on the wrong side of history, so be warned.
You got that right he's amazing, I grew up in northern Minnesota I met him at a county Fair. I have loved his music ever since
I saw Charlie perform in KS city in the 60"s!! We loved it!! His history is awesome Beautiful in and out!!
RIP to one of the greatest. Charley Pride.
My grandmother loved Charlie Pride , they said people did think he was white when heard voice. but I took her to see him when I got to be an adult and thi man put on such a great show , hes a legend Her favorite song by him Was ALL I have to Offer you is me. its beautiful song and Kawlagi , I loved that one as a kid
one of the GREATS
Really fun and great reaction! Charlie Pride had a wonderful voice and a big part of the country music scene back in the day!
And for the longest, they wouldn't show a picture of him because of that😟
I haven't heard this song in probably 30 years, but as soon as the song started playing, I sang along and actually remembered all the words!
I have been listening to Charlie Pride since I was like 8 years old he is a living legend in Country music
One of the greatest country voices of all time! I grew up on Charley Pride.
Been listening to him for many years... He's got a great voice
I would wake up to Charlie Pride, Jim Reeves, Slim Dusty and few others when I was young in the 1970s. My old dad's Sunday routine. Brings back good memories, simple times, simple needs.
Adore Charlie Pride.....my dad proposed to mum playing 'all I have to offer you is me'
Love Don Williams too, she played 'your my best friend' at his funeral, you may want to look those songs up ❤️
Going back & catching up on some of your earlier reactions. Charlie Pride is wonderful singer. I am so glad that you are completely open to all genre's.
He’s great ! I’ve listened to him for decades
I've been listening to Charlie since 1966... My all time favorite is Roll On Mississippi...a must hear Jay...
