We have a 'bluegrass' night at one of my neighbor's house and everyone is welcome. That's what I really miss, hearing bluegrass. The new country hurts my ears...but this kind I love.

Watching black folks finding out Charley Pride existed is fantastic. He's NEVER given enough credit for the doors he had to bust through...he managed to make it in country in a time where he couldn't even perform to his target audience because the venues were segregated. I think (I'd have to look it up to verify) country radio knew his race would be an issue so they didn't tell anyone he was black until he already had a hit song on the radio and people were hooked. He had TONS of hit songs. P.S. he's still alive. You should find a way to tell him/write him to tell him how you reacted. I bet it would make him so happy to see so many young black people discovering country after the struggles he went through.

My mother and I saw him perform this song at a country festival in California in 2016 he still is a very nice looking man and his voice still smooth as silk

I never thought about Charley Pride as being black . My Dad played his records along with all the other country music . Awesome singer . My favorite was Snakes Crawl at Night. Race never occurred to me .
I was stationed in Gitmo in the early 70s when Bob Hope put on one of his last military shows for the troops. His show was put on basically for the benefit of the Navy personnel and their family members at the main base. Naturally, the Marines were placed at the back of the crowd, at least those that weren't on guard duty, so our participation was negligible at best. My battalion commander was a James Mattis type; tougher than nails, mean as a snake, and wild as a March hare; we loved him. He recognized that his boys were being treated like second hand shoes and he approached Hope to request that he put on a show specifically for us, he declined. However, there was one man that agreed; Charlie Pride. He put on one hell of a show and although I'm not a country music fan at heart I was taken back by Mr. Pride. Afterwards we all faded back to our respective houch (literally industrial chicken coops) and my path took me past the mess hall; basically an old wooden building with screen windows, exposed wall studs, and picnic tables under over head lights. There was only one interior light on at the time and I was curious as to what was going on given it was midnight. Just as I reached the building my base commander came staggering out of the door to relieve himself when he noticed me strolling past. Marines like nick names and mine was Ham (Cunningham, go figure) and he called me by name and asked me if I had enjoyed the show. Of course I had and I responded accordingly. The he said, "Ham, I have someone I want you to meet." After he got through with his business he walked through the door and held it open for me and there he was; Charlie Pride. I was introduced and Charlie stood up, reached for my hand and we shook hands like long lost friends. Mr. Pride was born in Mississippi and I lived there when I joined the Marines. We exchanged memories of home, talked about his show and how honored he was to serve the troops. I was thrilled by the experience, the only "celebrity" I've ever met in person and the opportunity to meet a good man. I'll never forget it. And yes, he sang Kiss an Angel Good Morning, it was released in 1971 and was one of his greatest hits. On a side note, every Marine that gets stationed in Cuba goes through an orientation process. Since the Cuban Missile crisis happened less than 10 years prior, relationships between our countries was not what you would call friendly. Our primary mission was to hold the line, until the Naval dependents were safely evacuated from the island. How long did we have to hold; 23 minutes; it was anticipated that we would all be dead after that but the order was, hold the line for 23 minutes. Loved me some Marine Corps and our own unique, "Band of Brothers". Thank you Mr. Pride for thinking about us and thank you Jamal for the memory. Semper Fi: Class of 68.
Charlie Pride is a country legend. Saw a documentary where he said that although he was a victim of racism from venues, hotels, etc., never once in his long career was he ever abused by any member of his audiences.

Yes, before he was a recording artist, Ray Charles worked in a Country Western band. One of his first hits was "I'm Moving On" by Hank Snow. He had an entire album of Country, entitled "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music." On it, he had a huge single hit, "I Can't Stop Loving You." Another big hit from that album was Eddie Arnold's "You Don't Know Me." His follow-up album was "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music Volume 2." Hits from this album included, "Take These Chains from my Heart" and Hank Williams' "Your Cheating Heart." These two albums are on 1 of 4 CDs in the Box set "Ray Charles: The Complete Country & Western Recordings 1959-1986." You're exactly right about him living in the Metroplex but Arlington to be more precise. I've seen him many times at Ranger games sittin out with the rest of the people like normal and the cool thing is people didn't hound him and let him be one of us and just enjoy the game

But it could be that he did live in Dallas at one time and moved to Arlington later. Nowadays it seems it's just all one massive place from just east of Dallas to just west of Fort Worth. I lived just about where Grand Prairie started, about 4 miles from the old Naval Air Station and there was actually space between all the towns along I30

Here’s my Charley Pride story: When I was in the 7th grade, in 1970, my friend’s aunt took my friend, another friend, and myself to see Elvis at the Houston Rodeo. After the rodeo we went over to the Astroworld Hotel for ice cream. As we sat in the hotel restaurant eating our ice cream, I saw Charley Pride in the booth right in front of us! He was in town for his own rodeo appearance and was enjoying a meal with his wife and another couple. Since my parents were big fans of his, I was also, so I went over to say hello to him and ask for his autograph. I was all of 12 years old, shy, and completely star struck in speaking to him, but he and his wife could not have been more warm, kind, and charming. He signed my rodeo ticket and I kept it for many years but finally lost track of it. He told us that Elvis and his wife Priscilla were coming down to meet him soon and that if we waited we could meet him. We waited for awhile, but he apparently had been held up, and we had to leave before he showed up. Anyway, Charley Pride was one of the most loved country stars in his day, was wildly popular, had wonderful songs, and was a class act in every way. He’s still alive, too. You can find a lot of stuff on him out there. So glad you enjoyed one of his classics! We white country fans loved him and his music and still do! Music does indeed unite us all.
Great story! I interviewed Charlie by phone for about a half hour and later met and talked with him when he played for a convention and association I wrote for at the time. I was surprised when he, personally, answered the phone when I called the number provided me. He was a very nice, personable man and I enjoyed talking with him and meeting him. I have a photo with him to mark the occasion.

Hell, back in the day, Charlie Pride was on the airwaves all the time. I'm 54, and I remember listening to him on AM radio when I was a kid, alongside Glen Campbell, Buck Owens, Charlie Rich, Lorretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, etc., etc. Glad you found him.

As a little girl I can remember listening to Charlie Pride. My fondest memories are of riding in the truck with my Dad and Mom listening to him . My Dad would sing along to. This was on 8 track tapes .
He was very well known and loved in country music. I remember in the 70’s when I was a young child hearing him on The radio and seeing him on tv. My mom, aunts and their friends would go to Gillieys to see country performers. (Yes the same on as in the movie Urban Cowboy) A real country legend.

I have loved Charley Pride since I was a little girl. My goodness, his voice sent me to Heaven every time. Not only that, but he's a beautiful person too. I remember about 10 years ago, he was going to sing in Alberta and he found out that some online company was gouging some people and overcharging them 200 dollars a ticket. You'd never heard of Charlie Pride before? He's definitely a country music legend. I met him and Brenda Lee at the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. I've been listening to him for almost all my life... if not all my life. He's a great legend and my family has always enjoyed his work. And he's a super nice man in person, as well.
One of the best country songs and singers of all time. When younger, my grandma and I would listen to this tune on repeat. Many years later, I played one of his songs at her funeral.
Charley has had an amazing life. He started playing guitar when he was like 13, and was a pro baseball player & soldier before his music career. He was incredibly popular, became RCA Record’s highest-selling artist since Elvis. He’s now a partial owner of the Texas Rangers MLB team, and still releases music, his most recent album was only a few years ago, and he’s gotta be in his 80s by now.
And this dude is one of the top country singers of all time. He's definitely a pride and joy of the country music world, and he's one of my favorite singers.

MY mother loved him too, Steve! She is 93 yrs old now and in the nursing home. But when I was growing up, she had all of CP's albums, grew up listening to him. As a family, when he first became popular, we went to his concert and Ronnie Milsap, a virtual unknown at the time, opened the show for him. It was a fantastic concert! At one point during the show, a woman came up holding her toddler and held the toddler up to Charlie, the kid began to cry and Charlie said " please don't scare the child!" I'll never forget that. He is such a true gentleman, a very big heart in this man. So sorry for your Mom's passing, Steve. Sounds like you have good memories as well.

Mr. Pride... butter, honey, and whiskey in his voice. I remember hearing him when I was a kid in the 70's, still love the guy.
I was stationed in Gitmo in the early 70s when Bob Hope put on one of his last military shows for the troops. His show was put on basically for the benefit of the Navy personnel and their family members at the main base. Naturally, the Marines were placed at the back of the crowd, at least those that weren't on guard duty, so our participation was negligible at best.
My battalion commander was a James Mattis type; tougher than nails, mean as a snake, and wild as a March hare; we loved him. He recognized that his boys were being treated like second hand shoes and he approached Hope to request that he put on a show specifically for us, he declined. However, there was one man that agreed; Charlie Pride.
He put on one hell of a show and although I'm not a country music fan at heart I was taken back by Mr. Pride. Afterwards we all faded back to our respective houch (literally industrial chicken coops) and my path took me past the mess hall; basically an old wooden building with screen windows, exposed wall studs, and picnic tables under over head lights. There was only one interior light on at the time and I was curious as to what was going on given it was midnight.
Just as I reached the building my base commander came staggering out of the door to relieve himself when he noticed me strolling past. Marines like nick names and mine was Ham (Cunningham, go figure) and he called me by name and asked me if I had enjoyed the show. Of course I had and I responded accordingly.
The he said, "Ham, I have someone I want you to meet." After he got through with his business he walked through the door and held it open for me and there he was; Charlie Pride. I was introduced and Charlie stood up, reached for my hand and we shook hands like long lost friends. Mr. Pride was born in Mississippi and I lived there when I joined the Marines. We exchanged memories of home, talked about his show and how honored he was to serve the troops. I was thrilled by the experience, the only "celebrity" I've ever met in person and the opportunity to meet a good man. I'll never forget it. And yes, he sang Kiss an Angel Good Morning, it was released in 1971 and was one of his greatest hits.
On a side note, every Marine that gets stationed in Cuba goes through an orientation process. Since the Cuban Missile crisis happened less than 10 years prior, relationships between our countries was not what you would call friendly. Our primary mission was to hold the line, until the Naval dependents were safely evacuated from the island. How long did we have to hold; 23 minutes; it was anticipated that we would all be dead after that but the order was, hold the line for 23 minutes. Loved me some Marine Corps and our own unique, "Band of Brothers".

ANYONE who grew up during the 70's that hasn't heard of Charlie Pride...well, literally has been hiding under a rock.
When I was driving truck over the road down in Texas, heard a driver singing the first few lines of Is anybody goin' to San Antone, and they stopped , then I keyed the mic on my CB and sang the next line, and then somebody else came in with the next line and so on... might give you an idea of how much Charlie Pride gets from his fans and in Texas there was a bunch of them on the road that day... Check out Charlie's song Is anybody goin' to San Antone, I think you'll dig it.....

Yes, before he was a recording artist, Ray Charles worked in a Country Western band. One of his first hits was "I'm Moving On" by Hank Snow.
He had an entire album of Country, entitled "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music." On it, he had a huge single hit, "I Can't Stop Loving You." Another big hit from that album was Eddie Arnold's "You Don't Know Me." His follow-up album was "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music Volume 2." Hits from this album included, "Take These Chains from my Heart" and Hank Williams' "Your Cheating Heart."
These two albums are on 1 of 4 CDs in the Box set "Ray Charles: The Complete Country & Western Recordings 1959-1986." Other big Country hit singles by Brother Ray on this CD set include "Busted" and Buck Owens' "Crying Time."

You're exactly right about him living in the Metroplex but Arlington to be more precise. I've seen him many times at Ranger games sittin out with the rest of the people like normal and the cool thing is people didn't hound him and let him be one of us and just enjoy the game

But it could be that he did live in Dallas at one time and moved to Arlington later. Nowadays it seems it's just all one massive place from just east of Dallas to just west of Fort Worth. I lived just about where Grand Prairie started, about 4 miles from the old Naval Air Station and there was actually space between all the towns along I30

Here’s my Charley Pride story: When I was in the 7th grade, in 1970, my friend’s aunt took my friend, another friend, and myself to see Elvis at the Houston Rodeo. After the rodeo we went over to the Astroworld Hotel for ice cream. As we sat in the hotel restaurant eating our ice cream, I saw Charley Pride in the booth right in front of us! He was in town for his own rodeo appearance and was enjoying a meal with his wife and another couple. Since my parents were big fans of his, I was also, so I went over to say hello to him and ask for his autograph. I was all of 12 years old, shy, and completely star struck in speaking to him, but he and his wife could not have been more warm, kind, and charming. He signed my rodeo ticket and I kept it for many years but finally lost track of it. He told us that Elvis and his wife Priscilla were coming down to meet him soon and that if we waited we could meet him. We waited for awhile, but he apparently had been held up, and we had to leave before he showed up. Anyway, Charley Pride was one of the most loved country stars in his day, was wildly popular, had wonderful songs, and was a class act in every way. He’s still alive, too. You can find a lot of stuff on him out there. So glad you enjoyed one of his classics! We white country fans loved him and his music and still do! Music does indeed unite us all.
Great story! I interviewed Charlie by phone for about a half hour and later met and talked with him when he played for a convention and association I wrote for at the time. I was surprised when he, personally, answered the phone when I called the number provided me. He was a very nice, personable man and I enjoyed talking with him and meeting him. I have a photo with him to mark the occasion.

My 6 yr old daughter knows every word to this song because her late grandfather used to sing it to her before he died of liver cancer so abruptly when she was 3. This touched my heart today.
I have loved Charley Pride since I was a little girl. My goodness, his voice sent me to Heaven every time. Not only that, but he's a beautiful person too. I remember about 10 years ago, he was going to sing in Alberta and he found out that some online company was gouging some people and overcharging them 200 dollars a ticket. He refunded those folks their money and brought them into his show. He wasn't having it. What an amazing man. This Mohawk lady loves loves loves him.

I've been listening to him for almost all my life... if not all my life. He's a great legend and my family has always enjoyed his work. And he's a super nice man in person, as well.
I also met him in the 90's in Oshawa Canada and he really is very nice.

Charley has had an amazing life. He started playing guitar when he was like 13, and was a pro baseball player & soldier before his music career. He was incredibly popular, became RCA Record’s highest-selling artist since Elvis.
He’s now a partial owner of the Texas Rangers MLB team, and still releases music, his most recent album was only a few years ago, and he’s gotta be in his 80s by now.

MY mother loved him too, Steve! She is 93 yrs old now and in the nursing home. But when I was growing up, she had all of CP's albums, grew up listening to him. As a family, when he first became popular, we went to his concert and Ronnie Milsap, a virtual unknown at the time, opened the show for him. It was a fantastic concert! At one point during the show, a woman came up holding her toddler and held the toddler up to Charlie, the kid began to cry and Charlie said " please don't scare the child!" I'll never forget that. He is such a true gentleman, a very big heart in this man. So sorry for your Mom's passing, Steve. Sounds like you have good memories as well.
