Not the first, there were a very few black men in the business previous to Charlie, but he was the biggest. My favorite story is when Loretta Lynn was presenting an award, and she was told that if Charlie were to win, she was to take two steps back to avoid being “too close”. He did win, so instead of stepping back, she hugged him. Pure class.

DeFord Bailey was the first black Country *performer* with harmonica solos in the 20's and 30's but Charlie was the first black majorly popular Country *singer.* His first single *The Snakes Crawl At Night* was released in 1966.
In the late summer of 1966, on the strength of his early releases, he was booked for his first large show, in Detroit's Olympia Stadium. Since no biographical information had been included with those singles, few of the 10,000 country fans who came to the show knew Pride was Black and discovered the fact only when he walked onto the stage, at which point the applause trickled off to silence. "I knew I'd have to get it over with sooner or later," Pride later remembered. "I told the audience: 'Friends, I realize it's a little unique, me coming out here - with a permanent suntan - to sing country and western to you. But that's the way it is.' "
The show became the first of a long and active career playing to large audiences, his race soon becoming a minor detail compared to his success. In 1967, he became the first black performer to appear at the Grand Ole Opry since founding member DeFord Bailey, who had last appeared in 1941.

The man who introduced him is a Grand Ole Opry member Marty Stuart, who at one time was married to one of Johnny Cash's daughters, but who is now married to another country legend, Connie Smith. Charley Pride (-ey not -ie) who won Entertainer of the Year, the first Black artist to do that in the early 1970s was a hit maker and by all accounts one of the nicest men in country music, who sadly passed from Covid a couple years ago. He is one of the greatest legends in country music. My childhood was filled with Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves and Charley Pride because those were my mom's favorites.

Charlie Pride was not just a legendary country music artist. He was a very good athlete, especially baseball. He loved to go see his favorite baseball team, the Texas Rangers. He has thrown out the first pitch at several games and has also sang the national anthem
before the start of games. He unfortunately died before his beloved Rangers won the World Series in 2023.

Charley Frank Pride (March 18, 1934 - December 12, 2020) was an American singer, guitarist, and professional baseball player. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he was the best-selling performer for RCA Records. During the peak years of his recording career (1966-1987), he had 52 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, 30 of which made it to number one. He won the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971 and was awarded a Grammy for "Best Country Vocal Performance, Male" in 1972.

Old fart here (white) who was a kid when Charlie Pride was at his prime. YES, when his songs came on the radio, you just lost yourself in his singing, the lyrics, and the music. Then, some other time you would find out "he's black." The reaction to that was "Oh....I didn't know that. What a great song!!!" Yeah, the vast majority of people didn't care (there's always exceptions). They heard the song on the radio and it was awesome. You wanted to hear more from him. Then when you find out he's black, it was no different than finding out a person likes to wear leisure suits. You said "Oh...." and then life went on. I've always loved his voice and his hits. "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone." - "Where Do I Put Her Memory."

Charlie Pride was the first black country and western superstar. But his first love was baseball and from 1950 till ‘63 he played semipro ball for Memphis Red Soxs in the American Negro League. He would sing to his team mates on the bus as they traveled from game to game.. He’d sing the National Anthem at the games in 1965 he tried out for the New York Mets and didn’t make it so he turned his attention to singing full time. By 1971 Pride had eight singles that reached number one on the US Country Hit Parade and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

Hi Britt. There was a performer named DeFord Bailey who was a founding member of the Grand Ole Opry back in the 40s. DeFord last appeared on the Opry in aboumt 1941 and Charley was the next black singer to appear on the Opry in 1967. He has a huge string of hits and awards. Sadly Charley passed due to Covid complications in December of 2020 at 84 years old. Charley served in the Army and in fact was on leave around Christmas time when he and his lovely wife Rozene got married. He also had a 30+ mile long section of highway near his hometown renamed The Charley Pride Highway. He was also a baseball player both in the army and afterwards. He played off and on for several teams in the Negro Leagues and also in the Minor leagues. After he hit it big he used to go every spring as a guest and work out with the Chicago Cubs and later owned a piece of the Texas Rangers. A few of my fave songs of his HMMMM... All I have to Offer You is Me, Is Anybody Going to San Antone, Burgers and Fries. I'll stop there though a list of his great songs could go on and on. ; ))

Love your reactions. Charlie was an awesome singer and yes, he was the first black country singer and sadly for several of his first records, the record company didn't put his picture on the album cover as they knew, or thought they knew, that they wouldn't sell as many. Thankfully, they woke up and learned that skin color has nothing to do with how good a person can sing.

He had a bunch of great songs, this is my absolute favorite but you really can’t go wrong with Charlie Pride. I think you already figured that out though!

They underestimate country fans though, I never met ANYONE who didn't absolutely love his music. His songs always ended too soon, his voice was silk....sad thing is that he passed away with covid

  • @Sharpester

Charley was the first Black Country singer signed to a record label in the '60s. His management knew there would be scrutiny by the public if they brought up his race, so they released his music in the beginning without photos or detailed bios. Charley said he and the record label weren't trying to deceive anyone but instead tried to give his music a chance to speak for itself before judgment. Naturally, when he started playing concerts, the cat was out of the bag. Since no biographical information had been included with those singles, few of the 10,000 country fans who came to the show knew Pride was Black and discovered the fact only when he walked onto the stage, at which point the applause trickled off to silence. "I knew I'd have to get it over with sooner or later," Pride later remembered. Back in my radio days we had a regionally-famous singer here who used to introduce himself in live shows by saying, "You've heard of singers with names like Charlie PRIDE, Johnny CASH and Charlie RICH -- my name is Tommy Faile!" Always got a laugh.

This was from I think the early '80s, going by his and Marty Stuart's age appearance. I believe Charley Pride was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Also check out "Is Anybody Going to San Antone", & "I Don't Think She's In Love Anymore". Come Christmastime, give his song "Santa and the Kids" a listen.

My Dad took the family to see Charlie Pride back in the 70's. My Dad loved his music. We weren't really big Country Fans, but my Dad took us to show how professionals performed. He did a great show. I've been a fan ever since. A class act who broke Barriers.
The Guy with the Big Hair is Marty Stuart, and he is a well known Country Artist, married to another well known old Country Artist named Connie Smith.

Charley Pride was an icon. I'm 65 and when I listen to country it's classic country.
He's one of my all-time country favorites, right up there with Waylon Jennings. I know others who are still huge fans as well.
Yes, he shattered barriers when he hit the scene in the mid-60s and was well accepted. In fact, he won countless awards throughout the late 60s and early 70s. And he was still going strong right up until he passed from Covid several years ago.

Charley Pride was famous back in the 70’s! We had his records and my mom would blast him on the stereo. He’s got a lot of great music. I love this song but my fave is You’re So Good When You’re Bad. They actually played that song on Designing Women TV Show. I also like Roll On Mississippi! He’s got lots of great hits but those are my faves!❤ His voice is so smooth, he was this tall handsome guy with a beautiful smile! The guy with the sparkly suit introducing him is Marty Stuart and his Superlatives. I love him too! He keeps it old school country with the sparkly suits. Marty is an awesome country star too. He is on RFD TV a lot. ❤
If you love Charley, you also need to listen to the “Silver Fox” Charlie Rich. Take a listen to his songs Nobody Knows What Goes on Behind Close Doors and If You Happen To See The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.
And also anything by Ronnie Milsap. He does not have a bad song. My personal favorite is There’s No Getting Over Me.

I met him in a small club in my hometown after he had played a show in Maryland. They wanted to party after the show, and dropped in at the club. He was the nicest guy. He got up and sang a couple songs with the band playing, and he danced with a few of us regulars. Such a great guy. RIP Charley. Thanks for the music and the memories ♥

BRITT, I was born in 1957 and was a child in the 60s, when Charlie Pride became popular!!
My mother, who was born in Texas, was a country music fan!! The old school country of the 50s and 60s!!
Now my family lived in New Jersey but every year we would travel to Texas and spend a month with my Texas relatives!! One year, somewhere in the mid-60s probably, my mom's sister's husband, my uncle Dorman (how's THAT for a down-home southern Texas name?) asked my mother to listen to a tape of Charlie Pride, without showing her that he was a black man!! It May have even been this song that we listened to, but she thought he had an AMAZING voice!! At which point my uncle pointed out that he was a colored man!!😮😮
They seemed pretty SURPRISED about it so I would imagine that YES he was probably one of the first!! Needless to say my mom fell in love with Charlie Pride from that moment on!!!❤

When my brother bought Charlie's album (in 1967 I believe) was the first time he saw the man's face and found out he was black. Back then you heard music on the radio. You liked it well enough, you went to the record store and bought either the single or the album. My brother (12 years my senior) liked country music, loved Charlie Pride's voice, bought the album, and that's how I heard this for the first time. Even though I never became a real fan of country music, I'll go out of my way to hear this again from time to time. He definitely deserves his place in the country music hall of fame.

Charley Pride is one of my favorite! I watch a interview and Charlie was talking about moving to his new house in Atlanta. He said when he's not on the road his favorite thing to do was mow his yard! So when he was mowing the neighbor lady, asked if he would mow her yard! He asked how much she would pay she said $50, so he said Ok! The lady that was doing the interview, was that not downgrading you! He laughed and said No! When the neighbor found out who he was she apologized. He told her I got paid doing something that I loved doing! And he said if I wouldn't I wanted to do it I wouldn't have done it!
My boss went to a place where Charlie was playing, not many people came. Because KISS had a concert the same night. So Charlie asked if he could give his band a night off, and put a bunch of tables together. And would play and sing at the table. And he will pay for all the drinks for everybody! Of course everybody agreed ! They said they had the best time they had!

According to Wikipedia, Charlie Pride had 30 “Number One” hits on the Billboard Hot Country Music Chart. He died in 2020 of COVID-19, at the age of 86.
In his later years, Charlie Pride was active on social media. He posted regularly on Facebook of his activities and upcoming concerts. I remember when he went to The Country Music Hall Of Fame, and the Hall management let Pride set up a folding table and chair in front of his Country Music Hall Of Fame plaque, and he sold some of his newest music CDs, and signed autographs for fans and patrons who came to the venue that day.

Yes, the first. You gotta realize that most people heard him on the radio and fell in love with his voice. Then they saw him on TV, maybe a long time later. So many were surprised to see the color of his skin. He was my mom's favorite singer. I went to the Oregon State Fair in the early 80's with my mom, sister and 1 1/2 yr old son. My son was obsessed with his music. I was sitting on the isle in the small tent venue we were in. When Charlie started singing Kawliga, he got away from me and started dancing in the isle. After the song, Charlie mentioned the tow head in the isle enjoying himself. Such a down to earth guy. Check out Kawliga, and so many more.

Charlie Pride was always one of my favorite performers. "Kiss an Angel Good Morning " was definitely one of my favorite songs as a kid. Another of his great hits was "Green, Green Grass of Home".
The show that he was performing on was the Marty Stuart Show. I have seen him perform in person.
Back in the late 60's and early 70's most folks only got to hear the music through a static filled radio. No one really knew that Mr Pride was black until he was seen in concert and unfortunately during that time a number of folks were racist and left the concert in protest. A lot of those ignorant people broke the records that they had purchased. The whole thing was crazy, but Mr Pride did not give up and kept performing, and finally gained the recognition of the Country Music Artist that he truly deserves.
