  • It's not all that uncommon for dogs to eat dirt, but why do they do this? And if your dog eats soil, will it harm them, and what can you do to stop it? Well, there are a number of different reasons why dogs eat dirt…
Do you know the Secret to a healthy pet?
    - Find out in my FREE 5 step guide - ourpetshealth.com/petcareguide (it will also save you money!)
    Why Dogs Eat Dirt:
    - Dietary mineral deficiency
    - Boredom
    - Enjoy the taste
    - Intestinal or abdominal disease
Pica in dogs is the name given to the condition where dogs crave non-food items. Eating dirt is just one form of pica, with other variations involving anything from stones to smelly socks!
Assuming that your dog is not unwell and they are eating a good quality diet (therefore eliminating the likelihood of a dietary deficiency or underlying disease), then there is actually little cause for concern in the vast majority of individuals.
There are however some situations where you definitely want to stop your dog eating dirt!

Hi! 12 week old female rotties here! They are eating the dirt, grass, sticks, leaves, dandelions, and pretty much just whatever is out there! I use a variety of puzzles at feeding, and they get lots of physical exercise with each other, and have plenty of age and breed appropriate toys. We're just starting leash training and walks as I know it should only be intense for five minutes per month of life.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've bought muzzles now because their poop has been just shy of diarrhea pretty much since they been going outside (about a week). I'd rather not use them in a negative way if I can avoid it, but I am concerned for their [digestive] safety now since there's no way I can afford emergency surgery.
    Help!

What toys do you recommend for a 60 pound aggressive chewer. She’s a golden doodle.

My one year-old Mini Schnauzer is borderline Pica! He eats leaves, twigs, mud off my boots, bird-poop, rabbit-poop.... We've had to stop letting him run around the garden because he ate some Pampas grass and got a blockage! (Grass is going next year!) The breeder says it's common to the breed, he's a ratter, so that's what they do. Interestingly, he's never been very interested in toys. So I think boredom fits in his case. A fellow owner also suggested that training is good mental stimualtion. So, thanks for your help 🙂👍

what about a dog who is about 8 years old, never used to eat dirt and now is.... and around the same time stopped eating or at least became much more finicky. how can this be just boredom? been x-rayed and checked thoroughly, no virus and her nose is still wet and cold.

I wonder, could it be she's gone off what she's eating? I started my dog on a Raw Food diet following a digestive problem, and he's thriving on it! Kibble be gone!! 🙂

You could try keeping her in an area away from the plants for a while and give some kind of food toy to keep her engaged for a time after bed time, something like a strong rubber puzzle toy with a few biscuits to try and get at

Depending on the size and age of your dog, could it be they need longer walks? My Mini Schnauzer is just one, and we had wildly under-estimated just how much exercise he needs! He can walk for miles without slowing down, he's pulling all the way! He's certainly benefitted from stepping up his exercise. 🙂
