I’m learning so much from you. I thought my dog (3month silver lab) was dumb... turns out his trainer (me) was the problem.
It looks so easy with such a calm puppy. I wish to see „leave it” lesson with more active dog, like mine😁
Yea my puppy doesn't give 2 shits about "leave it" this video is just ridiculous for crazy active puppy's. We are petrified ours will have a bowel obstruction
@@Quintos. 1) Take your animal to boring environment, let them explore it and make yourself more interesting that that environment (i.e by moving, randomly jumping around etc). 2) Do some basic obedience training to tell your puppy you are interacting with them now and it is possible for them to get a treat. 3) plant something super interesting and delicious in the environment, but don't allow your puppy to examine it, but rather start practicing leave it. 4) move your puppy slowly away from that boring environment and closer to something more interesting while still paying your puppy for obeying. 5) Revert back to the boring environment when your puppy can't resist the disctractions anymore and move toward the exciting environment when your puppy behaves.
This takes hours and hours during multiple sessions and you will not get the exercise through in a week or possibly even month. The payback is huge because with luck your animal live 15+ years and you don't have to constantly fight them over garbage
Because your puppy is active it means that they can learn huge many things, but it is your responsibility to channel that energy. Active puppy is a fantastic and great thing.

This video can literally save lives: Super thankful for this info, Zak - had to bring my new puppy to the vet today (she's fine now, but it was a bad allergic reaction to an insect sting). Vet said these reactions can be fatal if left untreated, so, "Leave It!" is a true life-saver! (The accident happened whilst the pup was on a loose long-leash on the garden lawn and I was looking at it, but suddenly, it snapped at an UFO (unknown flying insect-object). A few minutes later: vomiting, excessive drooling and coughing. Here, the mastery of "Leave It!" - formed into a habit applicable to leaving flying objects alone - could have avoided the mishap.)

In my opinion, this is a vital skill for any puppy or dog to have. Not only is it for safety (stop them from eating things, or chasing things), but it also helps to build impulse control. And it's so versatile, to help with many different behavioral issues. ❤️❤

Thank you for making this video. I have a puppy and she is just like yours. I’ve realized you need a lot of patience and places makes a lot of difference to them even if they have been taught. For instance my puppy knows the sound of me saying No but gets excited wen she sees New objects and forgets all about it.

Zak, I have started puppy class with my boxer. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the trainer as I am constantly checking on how YOU teach certain commands and find I like your methods better! Thank you so much for the awesome specific command videos! I sincerely appreciate your approach! I was feeling very frustrated because my puppy was very inconsistent with "leave it", but after watching this video, it was very encouraging to see that I'm expecting too much too soon and that I need to be a little more appropriate with my expectations! :)

Honestly this is so like educational for like my soul. Ive been looking up videos on things i was never able to teach my previous dogs at my parents house and this is really showing me the flaws in how i tried to show them.

Solid lesson! Can you make a video for people past the puppy stage? Especially without constant food/treats - I'm so sick of cutting up turkey lol. Also, I feel like my dog knows perfect English when I have food, but then chooses to ignore me if I don't have food. Thanks for your awesome videos!
😂😂😂 you're funny 🤣 I'm struggling training my 2 months old German shepherd pup and when I call him and he runs towards me as soon as I pet him, he falls on the floor on his side or back with a big smile wanting more petting on his stomach 😂he's just too cute 🥺 and I'm lost in his training 🤕

In this kind of situation I personally like to use wait instead of leave it. When you say leave it they should leave it and never get that treat or object. When giving them something but wanting them no do it on your terms, I use wait. Then I can say wait until I say it’s ok. Or if you say leave it, never give them the object that you said to leave. Give them a different treat than the one you told them to leave. Just don’t want mixing up signals
You can use the same reward, except it comes from you, not the ground.
My dog weighs as much as I do and I really didn’t want knocked over when I was feeding him so I taught him to “wait” until I said “ok” before he ate. Now I sometimes let my little children feed him and I don’t have to worry about them getting knocked over by the dog trying to get his food.
He is trying to teach the dog the command "leave it" as if your dog founds something on the street and he wants to eat it you will say "leave it" and he will never eat that random thing from the street. Zak has to start from somewhere with the dog training and now he is just teaching the dog to follow the command and get used to it.
Lesona ONE that’s fine but this is not the case. He tells the dog to leave it and then picks it up and gives it to them. That would be confusing to some dogs
@@dardan1984 But as mentioned before, the difference is that the treat comes from his hand and not from the ground. Ideally a dog should learn to only accept treats this way and not pick something up from the ground. I don't really agree on your argumentation of mixing up signals (though there might be dogs who don't understand it so well and then your version of it is 101% safe but I don't think it's necessary with most dogs).
I'm air clapping while hubby is sleeping 😂 when Argyle left the chili alone. Now if I can get my 1yr old Shepherd to do this. 🤞

I just would not lie my pup to think stuffed animals and related items are something to chew on. My wife has such items, so it'd be about as smart as giving a dog an old sock or shoe to chew on.

This is really helpful! I live in an urban environment and our distractions go from 0-100 REALLY fast. And I have my puppy on an anallergenic food to evaluate for food allergies - I’m feeling so frustrated and desperate for him to not scavenge.
Though one of the issues I have is I can’t use a “high value treat” because he’s not allowed to eat anything other than his prescription food.

Ah Zac, let me share my insight gained from watching my Airedale improve. You were one of the key trainers who moved us past the toxic aversive ideas some Airedale people aggressively pushed about my dog and Terriers in general... Your methods are better and smarter. What I learned about leave it took a while to realize. You're welcome to practice my style on my Airedale yourself anytime! Yes, ha ha that means you have to visit us!
My method:
Instead of making the Object Of Interest OOI fly away from a dog that already is prone to engaging in predatory drive quickly, try "clamshelling" the OOI. This technique works for a wide variety of OOI. You already do a version of clamshell when you cover an OOI on the ground with your hand. I tell people to clamshell anything the puppy or dog rudely lunges toward (kids seem to like it the most). The OOI that gets covered/enclosed like a clam inside the clamshell tends to just "go away" in a non-energy way that tends to not cause much frustration. The pup will learn impulse control of clamshell is done properly, simply closing off the OOI from the puppy dog without movement in any direction and without sound (just like a clam closing its shell).
The next step for a good leave it would be to reward the puppy in the opposite direction from the clam shell ideally at your feet or by your face. I don't like opening up the clamshell to reward the puppy dog. If I give them the OOI, I feel like the dog brain is going to learn they can/should get whatever they're interested in if they just wait a second. I want to teach them to ignore whatever they find scattered around the world and come to me for their reward instead.
I find using a clicker properly helps speed up learning.
What I've shared was hard-earned. I believe it is a technique you will really like. I think you're already doing clamshell a bit.

This is awesome. Over the years my dog leaves thing pretty well alone in public. Especially while working. He also does the basic leave it command at home .... BUT still tempted to eat minature kid toys, socks, etc. If left out. Obviously a dangerous behavior for his health if the environment is not controlled and he swallows them. If I know his favorite triggers, can I work on this in the house and pretend to be walking? Could the more advanced stuff and tempting objects be useful to set up indoors for my backwards pooch lol? I live in a neighborhood in which people litter ALL THE TIME, so this is a huge issue for my dog. Definitely need to work on this, because it's so stressful when he picks up trash and tries to eat it.

If you're the type to respond to messages I wanted to know your opinion on exercising Kelpies as that's the breed of the dog I certainly want to adopt.
Australian Kelpies need a lot of exercise to be their happiest selves. A good jog or long workout combined with the mental exercise of obedience lessons should be done daily. Kelpies prefer to have a job to do (they will try to herd other dogs, pets, even children), but they also have an “off” switch. They can do a five-mile run, then settle on the couch with the family to watch a movie. Kelpies are not suited to apartment living as they need space for their limitless energy.

Consider taking up some sort of sport like agility, flyball, or frisbee. Kelpies are incredibly smart and diligent and they enjoy having that physical and mental stimulation. You'll develop a strong bond with the pup so it'll be enjoyable for you too! But don't do these rigorous sports with a young pup - you'll want to wait until they've finished growing and developing to prevent trauma to their joints & bones

How would you advice progressing to leaving items while walking off-lead? My poodle will eat anything on walks like pieces of plastic and wrappers. I then need to use ham to try entice her back but I fear that she is learning to eat these items because she likes the game off me trying to get it off her. But then how do I progress as she will eat them otherwise? Thanks very much for the video!
To avoid confusion I trained my dog two commands. . . .
Leave it = don't touch it as its never going to be yours just walk on by (and he was rewarded with a different treat every time he did it correctly i.e. not the one he was told to leave)
Wait = don't touch it until I say to have it but it will be yours soon (and the treat he was told to wait for was the one he got as a reward)

His training is going really, really well, but we cannot get Oso to leave plants alone. Coffee plants, pepper plants, orchids...any kind of plant is susceptible to Oso's wrath. How can we get him to stop?

Thank you Zak, for a fantastic lesson. This is so timely because the Instagram West Highland Terrier, “Ogi the Champ” (check out his Insta and his TH-cam) just got poisoned yesterday in his country where people intentionally put poison in food on the street. (After an immediate visit to the vet, it looks like he’s going to pull through). Personally, I am worried about the day my dog kills himself from eating something on our walks. Once he ate raisins on our walk.
I am hoping you will do a follow up video, perhaps with the same dog? To show some more practice sessions and how he progresses. It would be useful to take us to the next step. I’m going to start this training today. My dog is good at “leave it“ in the house but I have never done focused training on this topic when outside. I am starting now!

In your frisbee videos what kind of frisbees do you use? Im teaching my pup and my frisbees dont fly well!
This exercise is great, I was able to teach my dog to leave things when I tell him to.
My problem is that if I did not say the magic words "leave it", he just goes as fast as he can and grabs the problematic suspicious food from the ground.
How do you go from saying "leave it" - to train him not to eat anything that he sees on the street?

You can inject some hotdogs with wasabi paste and leave it on the ground (make sure your dog didn't see you placing them). First sausage will be an intense experience for the dog, reward them when they sniff it and ignore it
Also, i do believe that it is what most people are worried about when looking for this video. As he suggests normally, most of the time if there is a notable object, i can see ahead of the situation and avoid. Its when you are walking in a park where there are sticks everywhere
So I do the “come” “look at me” leave it” when I have my golden pup in our yard just walking and trying to use the bathroom. He acts the best when I give him pieces of turkey and listens, but I’m worried about always having to give him turkey to motivate him. Will he ever do any of this on command without treats?
@ZakGeorge; have a rescue mini doxie - got at 2yrs old, now 4.5yrs old. Is AKC, originally bred for show until minor non-conformation issues identified. A great dog, but headstrong re chasing down/sourcing dead mice & voles, which immediately go down her gullet. Have pulled more than a few from her mouth as she tries to swallow whole. Is there advanced 'leave it' training I can put in place? She smells the dead mouse/vermin well before I see it, even on leach it's an issue. Thanks in advance

Hey Zak! I wanna ask something. So my dog is now a year and a month old and I haven't trained her, just focused on raising her and stuff since she get sick a lot. But this months she's great.
Is it too late to train her? She doesn't know evem basic commands. If its not, what tricks (in order) should I teach her?
Another problem is she does not like treats and such. I know it sounds crazy but yeah. How to I train her if she's a year old, she doesn't eat treats and she doesn't really 'obey'?

I have a question. How can I train my dog to drop food that he has in his mouth?
Usually I ask them for a "trade", and what I do is "trade" offer them another treat that is much more exciting than the thing they have, and they will usually drop whatever they have in exchange for the treat I have. Hope this helps :)
