Nobody particularly knows why and it doesn't make your dog sick. There, save you 3 minutes.

Vets are so dumb and clueless when it comes to explaining the biologically appropriate diet of a dog. Dogs have the exact same digestive system as a wolf. Your dog thrives off everything a wolf does. Ideally dogs should be given raw meat, organs, bone / marrow, intestines (these often have pre-digested greens). Dogs eat dirt because it's full of important bacteria and micro-organisms. People feed their dogs junk kibble full of corn, soybeans, wheat and synthetic vitamins. All those unwanted carbs can start to ferment in their gut and screw with their health. Grass is very bitter and is eaten to help digest - it can make them puke if they eat too much on an empty stomach. Ideally feed your dog raw meat or give them a premium quality dog food like Akana / Orijen - not that Science Diet trash vets recommend. Feeding proper food will save you thousands in future vet bills.

If there's no reason behind it why do so many people say adding a nutritional supplement made the behavior stop? My wife is a vet and says its just a behavior that started and now we have to correct. Other sources non vet say it's nutritional and correcting it works and has worked for many people. Why?

Help! My cat goes to my potted plants to eat the dirt out of them. My cat eats the dirt wholeheartedly with a blacked out tongue.

Both of my nephew's dogs are eating dirt. They digg a hole and a few seconds later licking the dirt. Not a large sum!...No healthy issues to my visual knowledge. They both are very playful and energetic.!

Im worried about my sod lol not the dogs . Think that it must be the fertilizer attacking them both to eat it . They have no problem eating hunks of it ,Not the grass just the dirt

FYI dirt is probably more often than not the cause. Your dog reg eats grass maybe shortly after there meal regularly? Upset stomach? G I wonder what’s upsetting there stomach regularly? 3 or my dogs were eating dog religiously any and every time they got the chance. Always from the same couple of spots. And I mean eating it mouthfuls not playing in it like this non caring vet or maybe just ignorant idk. They way mine were going they were headed to impacted/stopped up intestines. The diet wasn’t it but I did. Change there food and they stopped eating dirt. They all the sudden didn’t wanna “play” with it anymore. (Sarcasm).

I disagree that they are doing it just for the fun of it. There is an area of the park beside my house where ALL of the dogs who go there eat the same dirt from exactly the same areas. My dogs don’t do that in my yard , anywhere else in the park or at other parks, but in the same specific spots at the same park. There must be something in that dirt that the dogs need.
We always think we know best but I’m gonna trust my dogs innate wisdom on this one.
As for grass - greens are good for dogs. My dog loves fruits, veggies and even salad and munches on lots of grass in the summer.

I strongly agree with you. Most vets don't have pets. They don't know something like this.

This doctor is just telling his opinion. There could be a lot of reasons why dogs eat grass and soil that most vets doesn't know. In my honest opinion, it's in their own instinct why they do that.
