I disagree with low level e-collar work for "trash breaking". Conditioning to the collar and the lowest level possible is fantastic for training. Take your time.
Trash braking no. I'm going to make that rock so unfun, the dog never wants to touch one again. I want the dog to think the rock just became the hand of god. I'm going to correct high, I'm going to hold for a couple seconds, and I'm not going to say a word. Preferably I'm not even in sight, but I don't care much about that.
Am I inflicting pain on the dog ? YES ! I'm taking 4 to 6 seconds out of it's life so it never does the life threating behavior again. Eating rocks, chasing livestock, chasing cars, all can and will kill your dog. Never had one die of a correction in almost 50 years. And I can guarantee you that correction is nothing compared to the alternative.

Thank you for taking the time to educate us. I assume diet, boredom and a lack of engagement could also play a part here.

ive been raising dogs for a longtime... i recently bought a female gsd puppy with the same problem.. i didnt realize how severe the problem was until she puked out rocks. i simply tethered the dog in a rock free zone, untie her when its time for training, exercise and walks.

$2000! I wish! We are over well $15,000 for the 3 life saving surgeries and after care our guy has had! That doesn’t include all the work with trainers too! We understand the importance of training, thankfully our guys loves training and is super smart, but has severe anxiety 😢

Our 8 year old dog has PICA, and has had TWO! (Yes, two) life saving surgeries. We have tried most things, training and now have a soft muzzle, which he absolutely hates. The problem is, the dog is fine 60% of the time, but that 40% is when he gets anxious and starts eating large sticks like they are going out of fashion! We are having a meeting with a trainer we have had success with, but I am becoming more and more open to an e-collar. The dog is very smart and loves training, but when he works himself up into a tizz, he’s off the planet! This dog is our child, but sadly, he’s got a death wish and won’t survive another surgery, and frankly, neither will I!

My first Great Dane ate my husbands socks while we were away for vacation. His babysitter wasn't so good thinking my 8 month old Great Dane wasn't still a puppy ;) He eventually had to go in for surgery and got fixed at the same time ;) We no longer allow babysitters to watch our dogs, only trained Boarding Companies ;)

This is so interesting! At least I know that there is not a quick and easy fix. I was kind of beating myself up about my 12 year old dog eating inappropriate things. (Horse poo, the stems of house plants, and Kleenex etc - I think he’s a bit bored or stressed when we are away from the house, and just likes horse poo when we are out for a walk). Thank you for such solid advice.

And what to do if a dog attacks something in the house which has a high frequency pitch sound when closes? For example of the oven door has a childlock part which pops loudly when we close the door.

I didn't understand who you introduce the remote collar if it is not in a training?
You use it without a reason just to find the level that change a behavior?

    • @griffinreitz7041

The dog doesn't need to know anything about the collar for trash breaking. You simply go high enough to make the life threating behavior stop, and then a bit higher. I want the dog to think the life threating behavior did the correction. Not me and not the collar. Those rocks just became electric. Why I try to be out of sight, if i can, and not say a word to the dog.
What was called trash breaking, for years, has nothing to do with "training". You are simply stopping a life threating behavior the quickest way possible. You can go right back to low level training the next day.
It is never "without reason". The reason is the dog is doing something that can get it killed. It is however without explanation, to the dog. The bad behavior just became very unpleasant, and not fun anymore. That is all the dog needs to know.

Often just simple consistant correction is enough.
