    It took me 7 1/2 years of hard work and savings paid off my 15 year home loan 2 vehicles a dump trailer and travel trailer. Put on a new roof & solar. Sack lunches, picnics , road trips & DIY mentality. It doesn't effect your quality of life and the feeling of knowing you could buy a new Corvette cash is amazing. Be disciplined and you will independent.

      Could also eliminate alcohol consumption. Yes? And tobacco if used.

    • @mississa-b
      @mississa-b 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vickismith9852 YES! Alcohol and tabacco products are very expensive! Alcohol cost between $386 (one a day) to $7,800 (2.5 a day) a year.
      Tabacco is now at $9-$12 dollars a pack. About $1,400 (5 cigarettes a day) - $4,368 (20 cigarettes a day) a year.
      Not to mention the physical damage both alcohol and tobacco cause to your brain & body. The "One drink a day is ok" rule is not true. It causes more harm than not.

    I don't have a problem with going out for a coffee date or a nice dinner date every once in a while with my husband. We both work full-time. We cook at home pretty much every day. But getting out of the house and letting someone else serve us every once in a while is really nice :) We have a lot of fond memories going on dates like that.

      What I did when my kids were young is I hit the flea markets in calif we were living in Santa Cruz then. I got big bags of baby clothes from woman in the flea markets I took them home washed them up and took the ones I liked and could use . I paid like $5 for the bag . Then. Ironed up the ones I was resealing and folded them nice and the next weekend I put them on a blanket on the ground and sold each so I could buy more clothes for my daughters and us. I made a killing. I so miss the calif flea markets. Now I’m able to buy my grandson that I adopted and keep him in nice clothing and both my daughters got my habits from me. We’re even extending it to buying a multi family home here in New Hampshire and all six of us moving in the same house. We’ve kept the house in texas and are refusing to sell it as they have lots of memories there. But we’re extending our frugal habits so that even my grandkids will live in the same home or we will but others and keep them in the same area so they aren’t paying rent to anyone. We pay the mortgage but also contribute into a fund each moth that pays for repairs and appliances and other issues that come with a home. It’s a savings account that if needed it’s there.

    Hi, I am from Russia and can share my own money-saving techniques. I've been using them in my home country and when living in the US for a decade - they work everywhere. When in the US, I had pretty good years and did not save much money, however, last couple of years were tough and I turned to saving money - and I paid TWICE as less for food without much problem in those couple of years than before Among the saving techniques were those you mentioned in the video - I stopped buying coffee (even though I never did it a lot) and refused from unhealthy snacks. In both, Russia and the US, I use the same life hacks - I save money on some fruit and veggies in winter. Though I don't have a country house and do not grow anything of my own (I am a city dweller), I buy seasonal fruit and vegetables on the market in summer-fall cheaper than in a store and much cheaper than they cost in winter and do some canning (or sometimes I buy fruit & veggies on sale in supermarkets). I've counted that the same can/jar of zucchini or eggplant salad, pickled cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes, sour cherry, peach, plump and apple juice cost 3 (!!!) times less than in a store. And I always have something at hand to add to my everyday meal )) Another thing that is popular among Russian housewives - they prefer to cook from scratch and avoid buying ready-made and frozen food (you never know what it is made of). It's cheaper, at least in Russia (though I tried some things in the US as well and they worked), to buy fresh meat, whole chicken (not parts), and make your own frozen food at home. For example, mince your meat, make meat balls and freeze them in the fridge. The cooking time is short - just fry, bake or stew them with different sauce. You can find a lot of videos on youtube from Russian housewives making a month-two months' semi\finished (or intermediate - I don't know an English word for this, sorry) food made of meet, fish, cheese, cottage cheese, veggies... that considerably reduces cooking time from scratch.

For entertainment we take our dogs out to play and we have awesome learning experience taking the family for road trips and hiking! What I really loved as a child is when we got together as a class sat on the floor and our teacher read a good book to us we a moral and afterwards we could discuss the book and ask questions and we had time to mull over the concepts and would look forward to have the rest of the book read to us at such a scheduled time. It really warmed my heart.

    As a single mom I pretty much follow all of this. I have only one income and I don’t depend on the government so I can’t afford most of the stuff you mentioned. I do buy paper towels. 🤷🏻‍♀️ We go on vacation at least once a year but I never spend more than $300 for a week. I find places to stay for cheap or free, buy groceries if we have access to a fridge, try to find places that offer a free breakfast, and go hiking or as much free stuff as possible while on vacation. We even did family vacations where we split the cost of a place to stay and food. You have to be willing to go without stuff that you don’t need.

    I know this video is almost a year old . All very good points . Here's an example ... I used to get 2 coffees every day before work . Sometimes going home I'd get a coffee . Wake up in the morning on my day off and go get a coffee . Wanted a coffee during the day so I went a bought one . Yes it can add up . My brother said if I saved my coffee money in a few years I could buy an ATV . Guess what I have that ATV now which I bought with my coffee money . Cheap $15 coffee maker . Make my own coffee for pennies a cup . Same with buying clothes . No more fast foods . Doesn't take long to make something in the kitchen . When making meals I always make extra for lunches . Used to hate left overs but not anymore . Never buy my water . I'm lucky that I have a spring not far from me to get fresh clean water . My tap water is good but I love using the spring water for drinking . Great video .

    I remember playing cards with my mom and siblings from an early age, hearts, spades, gin. Battle, monopoly, dominoes with my grandmother. I would wish to have played more. This year's budget project for me was the garden. I bought only seeds and dirt this year (no yard). My seedlings started in little handmade paper pots, moved to plastic cups, then into cardboard boxes lined with trash bags, a method learned on TH-cam from an Indian balcony/rooftop channel. My boxes lasted only one season, but that’s okay. Some are still going. Going to rehab my potting soil and use it again. I also grew plants from seeds and cuttings from neighbors and other material gathered on walks. I grew snap peas, basil, tomatoes, cilantro, hot peppers, zinnias etc. Gathered cactus, yucca, ornamental sage and oats, sedum, columbine. Was fun!

    • @JerryB507
      @JerryB507 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well before TH-cam, my first "garden" was reused milk cartons, soil borrowed from my apt complex's landscape and seeds donated by a neighbor who was doing the same thing. Although I've heard it many times since, her advise was to grow something, anything, but grow something.

    I did some research about water filters and I just needed something for me because I live in a small town in VT and like ALL towns the water was HORRIBLE! The taste and odor was obviously treated with chemicals..I purchased Life Straw and the bottle..what a difference! So I carry my water with me wherever I go..you can use the filter to drink water out of a mud puddle! I try like you to save money..I completely agree with you on the vacation thing..I make jewelry and if people only knew how little it costs per piece..it is labor intensive but as a gift or if I sell it..Good Will is AWESOME..I have a pocket book, brand name that I paid $29 for! You are a great example for everyone, trust me, thanku ♡ PS - I cut and color my own hair! I dance for exercise, thanku TH-cam ♡ OMGOODNESS! I dont have TV just wifi..I wash my own clothes..I designed a washer with 3 five gallon buckets I bought at Home Depot and I bought a plunger specifically designed to was clothes..I have killer arm muscles, lol. No drinks just h20 and coffee I make..I see through all the gimmicks but wish I started 20 yrs ago ♡

    My oldest child gave me a great complement in her first year of college, she thanked me for taking her thrift store shopping and yard sales. My mom was a single mother of 4. She paid off her house when I was 22 and she is super frugal. She met her husband who was not but he has a small business and she showed him how to live debt free. They have several rental homes that are all paid off and they can retire with residual income. People don’t believe me when I tell them the first sit in restaurant I went in to was when I was a teen and it was IHOP. So being frugal pays off for sure!

  • @vmorganbogart
    @vmorganbogart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Great video! I bought my first house when I was 26 & single. I realized I could live in a house cheaper than paying rent to someone else & it would be mine. How I saved the down payment: Every time I got a raise at work, I increased what went into savings by that amount. I lived fine on what I was making before so why increase my standard of living. I was able to qualify for the loan because I didn’t owe anybody. I was debt free with a good job with great health & retirement benefits. I very rarely bought anything unless is was on sale or at an outlet. I was able to retire at age 55, taking my insurance with me & a lump sum retirement, which I invested. My best friend used to say that I probably still had the first dollar I ever made. LOL. All this was from how I grew up & what my parents taught me. Growing up my parents gave us what we needed but we didn’t get everything we wanted. We would earn money by doing chores, babysitting, etc. Y’all are instilling great values in your kids. Kudos to you two! I love y’all & your channel. You have a lot of wisdom to give to others. Now, if they’ll just listen. LOL. Blessings to y’all & your homestead! Have a Very Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁 Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️🙏

      Carried a lunch for 45 years, mostly sandwiches, left overs. Coffee perked at home, I did not run my 3 children any place except to the music teacher. One saxophone player, one guitar player, and one who did not wish to play anything. Owned a 20 acre farm where I raised 1 feed cattle every 2 years, made hay, grew sweet and field corn 36 chickens 3 times a year and 2 hogs. Did it all while working 45 to 50 hr. Per week and on 24 / 7 call. Forgot to say that I also cut split and stacked 12 cords of wood for cooking and heating a brick 2 story farm house. Fixed everything that needed fixing too. Yes! I am now 68 years old and paying the price but would not change my life one bit.

    We've always had one of those Coleman hard coolers, the size of a large lunch box and it sits next to the refrigerator filled with snacks. If it's warm outside, we throw an ice pack in it and go. We always grab water to go and grab the cooler. It goes in the car with us whenever we leave the house...food and drinks at the ready.

    I grew up in the 50's and 60's. We played outside until dark in the summer. We went camping as a family. My dad built us a "playground" in our back yard. My parents were extremely frugal. My father made an above average income so it was by chose...not necessity . Mom ran a "tight ship" at home. I used the public bus system to visit the library every week. My brother became a surgeon (worked 2-3 jobs to pay for it). I married young...raised 5 children (they are all successful in their chosen fields). I went back to school after a divorce got a degree and worked for 20 years in my chosen profession. The key is a good work ethic and frugality.

    So much wisdom here! Just went and ordered dish cloths, changed my next vacation to a camping trip, and dropped a lot of guilt about not putting my kids in all these activities that other parents have their kids in. I would love a video on more info on the self-discipline of working out and being healthy. I used to have it down, but lately I’ve just let other areas of life take priority over that. Anyways, thanks for the great video, and all the good advice!

    #1 Eating out is for special occasions for us. #2 Apologies to those that love coffee; Coffee is a waste of money and the high temperatures are bad for your body. #3 We love old nicely worn in jeans and cotton shirts. Both of us sew and use iron on patches. #4 We have so many things to do around for free. It's been ten years or more since we last went on costly vacation. #5 Sam's Club has the big pack of industrial kitchen towels. They last longer than the Walmart 4 pack towels do so they are a better value in the long run. #6 We have a filter system and several Camelbac 32 oz bottles. Don't get back in your car! 😲 Stay by the pump hose for safety sake! I have seen more nozzles fall out when the person closes the car door. #7 My wife has been cutting my hair for 32 years and she cuts the kids hair too. She hasn't let me cut hers yet.😖 #8 We have never had a gym membership! We work out in the yard. 😁 #9 All we have here in Idaho is internet. #10 We never spoiled our kids that way. The only this we spent on them was scout camp. #10 1/2 When it comes to movies, we only do the bargain Tuesday $5 and only for special movies. Usually we wait and get the DVD on the release sale.

We watched a movie that only came in once a month, because it changed all the time. Weekly we would go thru the TV guide to see what was coming on and we would let them stay up later so we could all watch it together. Soda in a bottle or Koolaid if we were a little low on money instead of soda. we would change the beverages but not the main food.

    I am loving your videos and this one especially. You are talking to my heart. You guys are very frugal I love it. Randy calls me the rag woman. I do not use paper towels ever except for a dire emergency. I have the best rags and when I’m all done cleaning in the middle of the week they were in a bucket and I washed them and they are fresh and clean for the next time I wash floors or clean windows or whatever. We did the same and Yellowstone. We made our own lunches and kept them in a cooler. We do splurge on a coffee here and there but not very much. I love to cook so we do not go out to eat very much. We are so much like you guys. My husband is also a retired police officer from Travelers Rest South Carolina. He is now a police officer at the local airport. He is got 30 years policing. We love your place. If we were 20 years younger it would be for us but we are in our 60s and looking at life differently. We unfortunately were not blessed with children as you all were. Just loving your videos. Just love the love between you and your husband and your children it is very apparent. God bless you keep up the good work.❤️

    I try to look fairly good for my job. (OTR driver) I wear jeans and a sports shirt most of the time. If I buy a new shirt, I try not to spend more than $10-12 for it. I have gotten a few nice shirts at goodwill for about $3 each. Jeans I usually have to buy new. I get the loose fit carpenter's and my size is pretty hard to find used. Anyone my size usually wears them till they have holes in them. That's when I have to say goodbye to them. They don't make a very good impression.
    As far as television goes, I haven't had it in over 20 years. I am addicted to TH-cam though. Not just the vlogs, but I watch a lot of movies on there too.
    At truck stops they act like it's a bargain if they sell you bottled water at 2 for $2. I can buy a case at the local rural king for about $2 regular price. I seldom buy bottled water, but if I do, it's going to be a $2-3 case. I have a couple big insulated cups I usually get ice in at the truck stops for my 2 dogs that travel with me. (For free) They love ice. If I pour water into their dishes and it doesn't make noise, they look at it like there's something wrong. (Not spoiled or anything) lol!
    I have a 4.4 cup. ft. refrigerator and a microwave in my truck. I try to carry lunch meat, vegetables and fruits with me. Anything from a truck stop is expensive.
    I have never bought Starbucks coffee. I drink just regular coffee, none of the flavored ones. I usually pay around $2 to fill a 64oz thermos. I carry 3 of them with me. I go through about 1 1/2-2 thermoses in a day. Seldom ever drink a soda.
    I've rambled long enough. Another great video. Lots of good information. Have a great day.

    Young couple. I love it. This is the way I grow up in the Netherlands.
    We immigrate to Canada.
    In the Netherlands when you are ask people over for coffee, than you make coffee at home.
    When I do that here they come and have a mug Starbucks or Tim Horton
    In there hand. I think that they say your coffee is gross. I can not understand that.
    In 2009 granddaughter 📱 me mom did not have monnie for food.
    So I go over with lots of groseries.
    My daughter had a Timmies Coffee in front. No food but you go for coffee. That was first time that i got so mad at her. Because kids go first and than its the parent. She smoked and buy coffee. 😡
    Love my grandchild so i do everything to help. But nou ze is almost 23. Dis not see my daughter for 5 years till this day.
